00:03<OD>Sqrt{Not}: if you don't understand I find it unlikely you can answer
00:03<OD>Let's leave it at that
00:03<Gombye>OD: Not Bash, but here is way to do it in AWK: awk 'BEGIN { foo["0"] = "ls"; foo["1"] = "sed s/foo/bar/"; foo["2"] = "tr [:lower:] [:upper:]"; str=""; for (i = 0; i < 3; i++) { if (!str) str=foo[i]; else str=str " | " foo[i]; }; system(str); }'
00:03<OD>Gombye: .... yeah no
00:04<Gombye>If you wanted to do it in Bash, you would have to do something similar, I think. After constructing a string, you could run 'sh -c "$command"'.

00:42<jcbjoe2021>im new to debian and i've been using suspend. when i come back the next day and open the lid the battery is dead. i want to know more about hibernating. im looking at https://wiki.debian.org/Hibernation is this recommended ? i have a swap parition that debian made thats 977MB what do you think?
00:43<somiaj>swap sounds small, you need swap to be > amount of ram you use, and 1gig of ram is tiny these days
00:45-!-qeedblb [~freq@0002a405.user.oftc.net] has quit []
00:47<jcbjoe2021>somiaj: this is a fresh install like 2 days old. why would debian only give me 977M of swap?
00:49<somiaj>No one size fits all
00:49-!-freq [~freq@0002a405.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
00:49-!-freq is "unknown" on #i2p #moocows @#301_Linux #linux @#church #alpine-linux #debian
00:49<somiaj>1gig is reasonable for most cases that isn't too big. Think about servers that don't use hibernate with 128gigs or even more ram. That is a lot of space for swap
00:49<somiaj>Really defaults should be taken with a grain of salt, and adjusted to ones actual needs
00:50<jcbjoe2021>somiaj: i don't know what i need i just want to hibernate so i can keep using the laptop when needed. if hibernation won't do that i don't want it i will just keep using sususpend and charge when i need it
00:51*jcbjoe2021 sucks at linux for now
00:51<somiaj>Yea, the defaults just don't consider hibernation, since the amount of swap needed for that can vary a lot
00:51<jcbjoe2021>ok
00:51-!-famubu_ [~famubu@14.139.174.50] has joined #debian

00:51<somiaj>You'll have to create a new swap partition or grow that one to be > ram used to be able to hibernate.
00:52<somiaj>Though you battery dying after one day of suspend is supecious, suspend does use energy, but at a very low rate. So either your battery was almost dead, or maybe you weren't actually suspended.
00:52<somiaj>I have gotten 1-2 weeks on suspend before it takes out a battery one some of my laptops
00:53-!-famubu [~famubu@0002b540.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:54<jcbjoe2021>re-looking at https://wiki.debian.org/Suspend i think i miss read and did everything wrong.
00:54<somiaj>One shouldn't really have to do anything for suspend these days

00:56<jcbjoe2021>sorry gotta go really quick
00:56<somiaj>that is one way, though it should trigger when you clsoe your lid and you shouldn't really have to do anything

01:03<lindylex>I solved it like 90% there. Thanks for the help everyone. I will share the solution once I get it to where I need it.
01:03<somiaj>don't buy optimus hardware again? *hides*
01:04<lindylex>I hear you! It was how I configured the xorg.cong I got a partially working one.
01:04<freq>lawl
01:04<freq>i had a xeon like that
01:04<freq>intel + ncidia
01:04<freq>v
01:04<freq>it was amazingly fast though!
01:05<lindylex>I had to do this cd /etc/X11/ and then this Xorg -configure.

01:09<xnaas>so I know there's at least 3 different way to 'hold' or 'freeze' packages from updating via apt
01:09<lindylex>It created this file xorg.conf.new . It had a bug with the driver. I had to change the "nouveau" driver in the Device section to : Driver "nvidia"
01:09<xnaas>is there's a 'preferred' or 'correct' way? 😅
01:11<lindylex>Now I am attempting to make an xorg.conf file for when I only want the Displayport to only display with no laptop screen displaying.
01:13<lindylex>In Device section I had to specify a Buss hardware ID like the following : BusID "PCI:1:0:0" << This was for the Nvidia DisplayPort.
01:16<somiaj>xnaas: in general one shouldn't be holding packages.
01:16<somiaj>espically in stable, which is what is supported here
01:21<jcbjoe2021>are there a list of factoids for dpkg i know of , and ,v anything else?
01:22<xnaas>The packages in question aren't from Debian repos, somiaj. :P

01:23<xnaas>anyway, I just use `apt-mark hold` but wasn't sure if any of the other methods were 'preferred' or not
01:23<somiaj>dpkg doens't respond to , -- that is judd
01:23<dpkg>somiaj: what are you talking about?
01:23<somiaj>xnaas: kinda depends on goal, they all work
01:24<somiaj>with other repos pinning might be useful too

With the default configuration, on my laptop, when I perform heavy I/O, and the drive's cache gets filled up, the entire system slows down to a crawl, with systemd spewing out warning messages that it can't start journald and logging in via the TTY being impossible since the prompt times out

11:01<kritzefitz>Does anyone have experience with getting SteamVR running on Debian? I was able to get the startup environment of SteamVR working, but each game I tried to start after that fails with slightly different symptoms, ranging from crasing during startup or only rendering on the desktop but not on the headset.

17:19<knghtbrd>low quality flash chips
17:20<knghtbrd>controller chips made to a cost and without the robust testing a SSD would get
17:20<knghtbrd>At this point, SSDs are cheap enough, get an enclosure
17:21<knghtbrd>SSDs _can_ fail read-only if the flash chips run out of write cycles
17:21<knghtbrd>should do … but controller chips on those fail almost as often as anything else on them, resulting in data you can't read without a soldering iron and a microscope
17:22<sussudio>userT: most usb sticks will also silenty corrupt data
17:23<knghtbrd>OTOH, unlike a spinning rust drive which must have its controller board carefully calibrated to the individual drive … if the controller chip fails, a data recovery outfit _can_ just swap the chip, if that's the part that failed.

17:24<knghtbrd>it's still expensive. Your best bet for data storage is multiple redunant copies in multiple redundant locations.
17:24<userT>Can I slightly prevent a USB stick from corrupting data by itself by regularly using it, yet not *very* often?

21:32<seamus>Hi. I'm looking for the couchdb Debian package. I've been reading CouchDB's docs and they said that Debian buster had a binary package available, but https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=buster&searchon=names&keywords=couchdb only came up with a python wrapper. How do I install CouchDB on Debian?
21:33<sney>I don't see it anywhere either

21:34<sney>,bug rm couchdb

21:34<seamus>Thanks
21:35<sney>maybe the docs are referring to a 3rd party package
21:36<seamus>I was thinking CouchDB might have a apt repo to add to sources, but they just said that there was a binary package in Debian (and a few other distors), nothing about linux installing.
