01:54 | <Knaxius> | !sysctl |
01:54 | <dpkg> | sysctl.conf is a method of setting Linux kernel variables (such as those found in /proc/sys) early on in boot using sysctl(8). See the sysctl.conf man page for details; the procps init script applies settings from this file and files placed in the /etc/sysctl.d directory. |

01:59 | <will0w> | i'm trying to shrink a btrfs filesystem with lvreduce but finding almost no examples online |
02:00 | <somiaj> | I think you have to do this in two stages, lvreduce just changes the volume size, but you first have to shrink the filesystem |
02:00 | <will0w> | something like: lvreduce -L-2G /dev/mapper/lvmtest_vg-root |
02:00 | -!- | michaelni [~michael@213-47-68-29.cable.dynamic.surfer.at] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |
02:01 | <will0w> | ok, so i need something like btrfs filesystem resize -2G / |
02:01 | <somiaj> | So first use btrfs-utils (btrfs or btrfsctl) to shrink the file system. Once the file system is shrunk, you can then shrink the lv partition |
02:01 | -!- | ElPresidenteP_ [~ElPreside@2600:1700:3d10:4870:5969:80cd:4432:73e8] has joined #debian |
02:01 | -!- | ElPresidenteP_ is "realname" on #debian |
02:02 | <somiaj> | and of course always backup before doing any of this |
02:02 | <will0w> | right on. just tried it. thanks. |
02:03 | <will0w> | so as long as the sizes match - in this case "2G" - it should be ok I hope |
02:06 | <somiaj> | In theory, I haven't done this, so unsure how to ensure they both shrink to leave the same part of the drive(s) untouched |
02:07 | <somiaj> | https://www.casesup.com/category/knowledgebase/howtos/how-to-shrink-an-lvm-volume-safely-on-linux -- that is for ext4, but the same idea should apply to any filesyste |

02:07 | -!- | chele is "chele" on #mesonbuild #debian-next #debian |
02:07 | <somiaj> | it seems I missed a step. If you can shrink your filesystem more than you want to shrink the lvg (say 3G if you have the room), you can then grow the filesystem back to fit the full partition |
02:08 | <somiaj> | It could be if you try to do both at 2G, due to block size things might not line up correctly, so they seem to suggest initially making the file system smaller than you want, then grow it back to fit the partition |
02:09 | -!- | ElPresidenteP [~ElPreside@2600:1700:3d10:4870:f192:fe66:abcb:f727] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |

02:09 | <will0w> | that seems like a good idea. leave a little extra space |
02:10 | <will0w> | but i just tested the first way with only "2G" and it seems to have worked fine |
02:11 | <somiaj> | yea, I think that is just for saftey as if being too exact things might not line up appropertly |
02:12 | <somiaj> | and if you want to double check things, fsck the file system might also help |

03:00 | <_alexrelis_> | I'm reading online and I think it's possible if I rip the .vob files from the DVD and then use ffmpeg to convert it all to .flac. Still figuring out how to go about that though. I started with Handbrake but it seems that software package doesn't let me disable video ripping. |

09:20 | <Bart> | Is there a way to find out at what exact date a Debian system was upgraded from Debian 8 to Debian 9? |
09:20 | <Habbie> | if you still have dpkg.log it's easy |
09:21 | <Habbie> | otherwise you'll have to find some file that was touched by that upgrade, but not after it |
09:21 | <Bart> | yes, I have |
09:21 | <Habbie> | which is a lot more work |
09:21 | -!- | Gombye [~Gombye@7YZAAE1ZC.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |
09:21 | <Habbie> | Bart, then i think you can grep for 'deb9' in dpkg.log |
09:22 | <Bart> | ok, let me try that... |

09:22 | <Anarka> | zgrep does |
09:24 | <Bart> | Hmm... I find different dates: |
09:24 | <Bart> | root@s-ebl-jnks05-15:/var/log# zgrep deb9 dpkg.log* | cut -d" " -f1 | uniq dpkg.log:2021-12-02 dpkg.log:2021-12-04 dpkg.log.1:2021-11-03 dpkg.log.1:2021-11-06 dpkg.log.1:2021-11-15 dpkg.log.1:2021-11-29 dpkg.log.1:2021-11-30 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-02 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-03 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-04 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-17 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-18 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-10-31 dpkg.log.2.gz:2021-11-01 dpkg.log.3.gz:2021-09-15 dpkg.log. |

09:27 | <Bart> | ok, if I do |
09:27 | <Anarka> | base-files owns /etc/debian_version so maybe there |
09:27 | <zabriski> | hi, I'm trying to use xscreensaver on lxde but it keeps getting disabled by something, the only post I can find with a similar issue is https://mail.xfce.org/pipermail/xfce/2018-February/035933.html and I can't understand the xscreensaver-command-pid.txt output. What do I do to track down what's disabling it? |
09:27 | <Bart> | zgrep deb9 dpkg.log* | cut -d" " -f1 | uniq -c |
09:28 | <Bart> | then I find one date with 2599 occurrences of deb9, the next smaller one is 137 occurrences... so I guess I know now :-) |

11:12 | <kveroneau> | Yeah, every laptop is different. It wasn't the audio volume bar, it was a random boolean toggle in alsamixer. I'll look it up later and let you know what the toggle is called, maybe there is a better way to fix it. As everytime I plug in HDMI, I need to open alsamixer and toggle it to get sound out of HDMI. It's a bit annoying to say the least, and I'd love a better solution. This is also in bullseye. |
11:12 | <kveroneau> | It uses Intel integrated graphics, and the laptop is from 2010. |

14:12 | <r4fkramer> | Hi all, to somiaj, imMute and jmcnaught, who have provided Support for me here minutes ago: I read and reread all the instructions presented here. But, every time I restarted the machine, the service was not started and the degraded status in debian remained, because this Apache service was not active (it didn't start with Debian restart). |
14:12 | <Cork> | ah, found it |
14:12 | <bremner> | oh? |
14:12 | <Cork> | setterm -linewrap defaults to off now |

14:12 | <Cork> | so setterm -linewrap on fixes it |

17:54 | <ttok8> | got an old Dell Inspiron 9400, upgrade Debian to 4.19.0-18-686-pae but now, cannot get my Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN driver (was wl on wlan0) loaded. Can you Gentlemen offer a helping hand? |
17:56 | <sney> | since you upgraded the kernel, you also need to upgrade the kernel headers, so that the wl driver can build for the new kernel |
17:56 | <sney> | assuming you're using the broadcom-sta-dkms package, this will happen automatically once you install the headers. |
17:57 | <ttok8> | Thanks, Sney. Not sure how to go about updating the headers. :( |

17:58 | <somiaj> | though should just be 'apt install linux-headers-686-pae' |

23:20 | <nr0q_radio> | that's what I have on RHEL too, seems to be the one all the linuxes are using |
23:21 | <_zxq9_> | Especially ones that wanted all kinds of access that angered the SE system. |
23:21 | <dawdwa> | Hi can anyone help me with instalation and problem of no wifi drivers for intel 6e AX210 160 mhz adapter.. |
23:22 | <sney> | AX210 support was added in 5.10, so you should just need firmware-iwlwifi if you are on bullseye or newer |
23:22 | <_zxq9_> | You need a guy whose full time job is making sure FF (and Chromium) work properly and don't get packaged in some really insane way that messes up the rest of the project (and this usually requires some packaging guideline exceptions, which is a high enough barrier to make this an undesirable issue to deal with). |
23:22 | <sney> | !non-free sources |
23:22 | <dpkg> | Edit /etc/apt/sources.list, ensure that the two main Debian mirror lines end with "main contrib non-free" rather than just "main", then «apt-get update». But bear in mind that you'll be installing <non-free> software. These may have onerous terms; check the licenses. See also <sources.list>. |
23:22 | <sney> | dawdwa: ^ do this, then 'apt install firmware-iwlwifi', then reboot. |
23:24 | <dawdwa> | I cant even install it during instalation it doesnt detect any wifi drivers and i have no ethernet port on my laptop so when i finish the instalation it just keeps bootlooping sayin Intel read version failed (-22) |
23:25 | <sney> | oh, this is a new install? do the install again, with the firmware image |
23:25 | <sney> | !firmware image |
23:25 | <dpkg> | There are <live> system and <netinst> and DVD images containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages available from https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/ The images are "unofficial" because "official Debian" includes only 100% free software, but otherwise identical to the normal installer images and prepared by the same Debian Developers.
