03:27<r4fkramer>Hello everybody. Please, I would like to know if the procedure for recovering grub in debian bullseye exactly matches this procedure using the Debian LIVE ISO, or if there is any significant difference in the procedure:

03:30<jm_>even regular installer has recovery mode, but you need to handle grub installation yoruself

03:40<r4fkramer>jm thank you for answering. Not so sure when you say I need to handle grub installation myself. Isn't this automatic procedure in debian using LIVE mode enough ?
03:40<r4fkramer>sorry for the late answering. I was away for some minutes here
03:41<petn-randall>r4fkramer: No, the live iso does not install grub for you, that's the whole point of a live system.
03:41<jm_>r4fkramer: it probably is enough, I'm just saying you can also help yourself if you only have debian installation medium at hand

03:43<r4fkramer>I see jm_ Ok petn-randall, so basically you are saying it hasn't this property...
03:44<r4fkramer>According this point of view, there's no way except for this: https://tutorialforlinux.com/2021/06/30/step-by-step-reinstall-grub-on-debian-bullseye-guide/2/
03:45<petn-randall>r4fkramer: Usually people here explain their problem first before asking if the solution is right for them. What problem do you see? And how did it come to that point?

03:46<r4fkramer>Explaining the entire issue would be time-consuming, so I opted for a question that could go straight to confirming a possible solution to the problem.
03:47<r4fkramer>But, I will try to summarize the explanation by presenting the problem. I ask for your patience for a few minutes and I'll be right back

03:49<r4fkramer>petn-randall, basically the grub I used in debian was erased by installing and configuring the same bootloader when installing Arch Linux. Arch installation completed successfully; but the grub installed through it has not been fully configured, and now I can't access my debian installation anymore.

04:00<Karmavil>or do you have 2 separate disks?
04:02<r4fkramer>Well, Karmavil I can try, although I don't see how it would be possible to view Debian or Arch Linux partitions at all.
04:02<r4fkramer>I already had a suggestion to use a LIVE mode system, Rescatux (Debian based), but I would like to know if by the Official Debian Bullseye ISO this would not be possible (as it was in Stretch 9 version)
04:02<r4fkramer>No, it's two OS in the same hard disc - dual boot between Debian and Arch Linux
04:02<Karmavil>My fault, I should ask first if we're talking about disks or partitions in the disk
04:03<r4fkramer>No worries, but, did you understand my issue now ?
04:03<Karmavil>Yeap
04:04<amacater_>If you boot with install media, yes, you can boot the install medium to rescue mode, mount the partition, chroot to it then update-grub
04:04<r4fkramer>Ok, that's the problem. Strange, in virt-manager, grub configuration was completed successfully in Arch Linux, but the same procedure wasn't completed similar in real hardware. That's why I prefer finding a solution through Debian ISO
04:05<amacater_>It may be worth trying it before asking - in some sense, if you can come here saying "I've already tried this" it narrows down our focus a little

04:08<amacater_>I normally find if I mount the root partition from the rescue media - I think it may mount it as /target, cd to /target and then chroot . that it has mounted the partitions I need
04:08<r4fkramer>no, I don't have all of them separated
04:09<r4fkramer>Hum, fine, I can try this way also....
04:09<amacater_>So - the single partition should have the other mount points referenced from it - the rescue environment is running in memory
04:10<r4fkramer>Fine, so I don't need to mount them separate also, right ?
04:10<r4fkramer>If I used just one partition to install the whole OS
04:10<amacater_>No, not in my experience - if it fails, exit the chroot and try again, but with one partition it should be fine because it should be self consistent

05:35<bentham>Bart: but jessie is ancient/dead
05:35<amacater_>Bart: What distros are you supporting?
05:35<Bart>I know... but customers of us still want to use our software on for example Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 and things like that.

05:38<bentham>In my view, jm_ has the right answer, try to get the packages you want into a Debian that still works.
05:38<Bart>trust me... only 2 or 3 years ago we'd have to deliver software that also still runs on WinXP... not fun :-(
05:38<amacater_>Bart: If your customers want to use your software on Red Hat 7.2 - fine - do they have specific, pinned support for that release with Red Hat? Otherwise, tell them nicely that they need to update their Red Hat which will bring them to 7.9
05:39<bentham>Maintaining a few packages and their dependencies, painful as that might be, will be easier than maintaining an entire fork of a distribution.
05:40<amacater_>Otherwise, the sane answer is to say - we will provide you with a build of our software - somehow - but will not support you if you connect it to the Internet or any other machine :)
05:40<amacater_>Especially with a java ecosystem given the recent kerfuffle about log4j
05:41<Bart>Fact: I'm not the one making the decisions on what distro's we support... :-( I totally agree with your comments, but now I just need OpenJDK 8 on Debian 8 jessie, so I'm looking for the best way to do that: using a certain url in my sources.list or maybe download something from java.com ...?
05:41<amacater_>Bart: Seriously: Do you have a matrix of operating systems that you/your company support? snapshot.debian.org might well work for you.
05:42<amacater_>Otherwise, get hold of the distribution media for the last Jessie release and build from those in a VM
05:43<amacater_>https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/8.11.0/
05:44<Bart>The Debian 8 is already up and running, it only needs Java 8 because our Jenkins agents require Java 8 or higher.
05:44<amacater_>There is an 8.11.1 in that tree as well - that fixed apt.
05:45<amacater_>So - grab the DVD from there and install the OpenJDK that was then current
05:45<jm_>Bart: if you really want it, apt allows you to disable that, see /usr/share/doc/apt/examples/configure-index → AllowUnauthenticated
05:45<Bart>But 8.11.1 will still hava OpenJDK 7, not 8, right?
05:45<amacater_>It will have whatever was then current.
05:45<amacater_>!frankendebian
05:45<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian and <reinstall>
05:46<amacater_>Essentially: if they're running 8 and 8 didn't ship with OpenJDK8 - you're on you're own and they're ABSOLUTELY out there with no support.
05:46<bentham>Bart: That sounds right, so you'll need to build OpenJDK 8 yourself; I guess you can use sources that Debian has made available for this, although you might need to build from the non-Debian part.
05:46<amacater_>If they want 8, they'll have to move forwards
05:46<bentham>^^
05:48<Bart>Hmm... of course it doesn't *need* to be OpenJDK, it can also be the Java from https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp I might try downloading one of these and see if I get things working...
05:48<amacater_>Security updates for Jessie ended June 2018 - so they're four years out of any feasible use.
05:49<bentham>(If you do what I suggested, prepare for a miserable time building dependencies such as gcc and friends, all of which would accomplish little more than migrating to stretch anyway, except without the community behind you.
05:49<bentham>)
05:50<amacater_>It should be feasible to update a running Jessie machine to Stretch - I've done this several times - and then move forwards. What will kill you is third party / commercial applications that were never part of Debian in the first place
05:50<bentham>I mean, anyone running jessie now is asking for trouble. Don't tell us who your client is, since they are a good target for hacking.

05:51<Bart>so that's why I'm setting up a Debian 8 now again.
05:52<amacater_>Bart: Ha, ha only serious: it's the sort of thing where you'd be doing the community a favour if you visited with a pair of insulated cutters to cut mains cables and Ethernet to prevent the security nightmare
05:52<amacater_>Bart: See above: RHEL 7.2 isn't - unless you have a support contract with RHEL per machine - it's RHEL 7.9
05:53<amacater_>If you really must do this: Build a clean Jessie in a VM and do that there and add the caveats I gave above.

05:54<Bart>anyway, I'll first see how far I can get with the java from https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Bear with me and thanks for the chat! I know now that getting OpenJDK 8 on our Debian 8 jessie will be a p**n in the *ss... I guess I'll bring this up in one of our team meetings... supporting that kind of ancient stuff is just too cumbersome...
05:54<amacater_>If you are having to build for jessie upwards - build a clean build slave per release. If your main build slaves are only running stretch: stop, right now, and build more modern build slaves.
05:54<Bart>I already have a Debian 8 VirtualBox VM and I can build our software there. It's just that I would like to have it in our Jenkins CI... but jenkins agents need Java 8 :-(
05:55<amacater_>If you stick with the latest Debian stable many more people can help you.
05:56<Bart>amacater_: i totally agree, I also love to be on the cutting edge, it's just that my employer doesn't ;-)
05:56<amacater_>Likewise: if you're building _for Debian boxes_ as far as possible, use ONLY the jenkins or whatever packaged with that Debian release - otherwise you've got to go to upstream and ask them to support > 3 year old versions.
05:57<amacater_>Bart: Which country are you in: if English speaking, show them the guidelines from US CIS / NCSC in UK or any national CERT team
05:58<amacater_>And, if all else fails, go via your management to the CEO / CTO with a signed statement that you will not be responsible for any security errors, hacking or other problems from using out of date software ...
05:58<amacater_>Make the point that the risk decision stops entirely with them once you've made them aware.
05:59<Bart>amacater: Belgium. But less risk, since our software runs on systems that are not connected to the internet :-)
05:59<bentham>Bart: right, no one in here but us chickens!
06:00<bentham>Why not upgrade your Debian machines to stretch and have two versions of your software? That might be a better solution, particularly if the IBM support framework is substantively different.
06:01<amacater_>Bart: https://www.first.org/members/teams/cert-be should be able to help.
06:02<amacater_>In all seriousness: if you are having to support multiple Debian versions, then a toolchain/Jenkins CI per version makes a lot of sense. It's the way that Debian themselves do it for a stable release: all tools have to be in that release, effectively
06:03<amacater_>[Broken recently for Firefox and Rust dependencies - but that just meant a separate toolchain for that package, I think].
06:04<Bart>I just unpacked the 64-bit binary installer from https://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp and guess what!
06:04<Bart>jenkins@s-be-jnks07-21:~/jre1.8.0_311/bin$ ./java -version java version "1.8.0_311" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_311-b11) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.311-b11, mixed mode)

06:14<Bart>OK, just found this page: https://docs.datastax.com/en/jdk-install/doc/jdk-install/installOracleJdkDeb.html The instructions there should help me to make that Oracle JRE my default java.
06:15<Bart>It's been a while since I've used update-alternatives to use a Sun/Oracle java :-)
06:15<amacater_>If not, try debian's /etc/alternatives to point it ot that
06:19<Bart>ok, following those instructions there worked. After logging in and typing java -version i get the 1.8.0_311 one, which rockz! :-)

15:16<mason>acidsys: You'll get a chance to add kernel arguments at the point where the installer installs GRUB
15:17<mason>acidsys: Near the end. You'll want to do it there. I don't believe the installer copies arguments from how it was launched.
15:18<pookie>hello, is there a CLI tool to explore the various virtual packages and where they actual point to?
15:18<pookie>for example: default-jre
15:18<acidsys>hi mason, I just did "Install GRUB boot loader" but it did not ask me for extra kernel parameters. is it somewhere else in expert mode possibly?
15:19<mason>acidsys: Oh, hrm. It could be expert mode. I only tend to do debootstrap installs and I install GRUB manually.
15:19<mason>acidsys: After the install then, if it doesn't ask you, you can dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc or grub-efi-amd64 as appropriate, or just edit /etc/default/grub

21:42<sarnold>there's two ways of doing backups..
