02:05<r4fkramer>Hi jm_ it didn't work - grub was reinstalled successfully, but arch linux is not listed on it, just debian
02:06<trench>r4fkramer: how did you install arch?
02:06<trench>r4fkramer: from the ground up?
02:06<r4fkramer>So, there are any issues related to Arch Linux installation - curiously it was installed successfully in virt-manager and booted fine
02:07<jm_>r4fkramer: like I said 3 times, have you verified if it's listed in grub.cfg on debian?
02:07<r4fkramer>trench, I installed using traditional method in command line

02:07<r4fkramer>jm_ I installed Arch Linux twice: one installation in virt-manager and it was finished successfully

02:36<r4fkramer>BenNZ fine, but I really can't understand why it is happening

02:37<r4fkramer>jm_ I see, I have similar dual boot here (Windows 10 for my son) and it works fine

02:39<r4fkramer>jm_ amd BenNZ I used this guide: https://wiki.debian.org/Grub

02:40<jm_>as an alternative, you could add grub entries to create boot entry for arch to /etc/grub.d/40_custom
02:41<r4fkramer>jm_ it means: I will have to study harder to be able to fix this issue....
02:41<r4fkramer>No worries about it. The problem is: what to read
02:45<r4fkramer>jm_ It seems like a lot of work to be able to boot an OS - I won't waste my time on this jm_ - if it was something necessary to run GRUB correctly I would; but I don't have the same appreciation for Arch Linux.
02:45<r4fkramer>It seems to me that this is a technical failure of the Arch installation process in dual boot with another Linux OS, because in a virtual machine or when I install it alone on a HD this does not happen.
02:45<r4fkramer>The Arch installation process is more manual - but that doesn't mean everything works in the end, like what happened here.
02:45<r4fkramer>So I'll leave it there.

16:08<r4fkramer> Hello everybody. After problems with installing Arch Linux, this issue appeared on the swap partition. Initially I thought it would be due to the lack of this UUID in fstab. But this swap partition UUID is there in fstab. So I don't know why I can't use 'swapoff -a && swapon -a' anymore Can someone please explain to me what happens and how to fix this problem? https://paste.debian.net/1226787/

16:37<enigma9o7[m]>Okay so I've been trying to figure out how to use 4.19kernel from buster with bullseeye on an old 32-bit machine, and support updates. I finally got that sorted out and working right with /etc/apt/preferences and setting priority for linux-image-686 to 1001.
16:37<enigma9o7[m]>I'm now trying to do the same thing with linux-headers-686 and there is a problem... it conflicts with libc6-dev
16:38<enigma9o7[m]>It appears I cannot install the headers without removing libc6-dev, or downgrading libc to 2.28 but of course not going to do that as that would break everything....

16:42<amacater_>!frankendebian
16:42<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian and <reinstall>
16:43<sney>there might be an intermediate package on snapshot that would let it work, and allow you to keep the older kernel, but I would expect other problems to pop up if you're building modules for a buster kernel in bullseye
16:43<amacater_>Use the bullseye installer and bullseye - maybe, potentially, do an expert install. If you can't use pae, use the 686 kernel without pae

23:02<mangodfruit>hello all
23:02<mangodfruit>I have a questions please?
23:02<raven523>mangodfruit: please ask
23:03<mangodfruit>I am a newbie....I have tested ssh on 2 machines running on debian 10.11...I cannot find the private key and public key on .ssh folder on the home user folder
23:04<mangodfruit>is this normal?
23:04<raven523>that is normal. You don't have a key until you run ssh-keygen
23:04<mangodfruit>I though that the keys are generated automatically, when I don't generate them with ssh-genkey
23:05<raven523>I think that applies to server keys, not client keys
23:05<mangodfruit>but, I though that ssh uses symmetric and assymetric keys
23:05<sussudio>mine are in /etc/ssh
23:05<raven523>yes. It's required for the server. It's not required for the client
23:06<raven523>Some servers can require clients to provide a key, but by default, most don't require it
23:07<mangodfruit>I can see some keys in /etc/ssh as sussdio have suggested
23:07<mangodfruit>and this is on the client machine
23:07<raven523>those are that machine's server keys
23:07<mangodfruit>I have installed the ssh-server on both
23:08<mangodfruit>but there are both private and public keys
23:08<mangodfruit>?
23:08-!-a0z [~a0z@90.244.128.146] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:08<darkphysics>Run ssh-keygen to generate your keys

23:09-!-madsa is "realname" on #debian
23:09<raven523>yes, those are the server keys, not the client keys
23:09<raven523>client keys go in ~/.ssh
23:09<mangodfruit>I did that exercise before....but I don't understand what is the difference between generating the keys manually and not connecting directly without generating them?
23:11<Gerowen>To connect using SSH keys, you first generate the keys on your client machine that you're using to log into the server from. You then have to publish the public half of your SSH key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file of the user account you will be logging into on the server side.
23:11<Gerowen>You can do this with ssh-copy-id user@server .
23:11<darkphysics>All users of ssh need a unique private key. Your ssh-server has its own keys
23:12<raven523>users (clients) don't necessarily need a private key. They might use a passphrase or some other mechanism for authentication
23:12<Gerowen>raven523: Eeeeewwww, passwords, :p

23:15-!-jrklein [~cloud@34.234.31.16] has left #debian [Parting]
23:15<mangodfruit>ok....so in my case....since I have not generated a private key....knowing that both machines have ssh server installed .......it means the client is using its private key (which is found on /etc/ssh ? right?
23:15<raven523>client keys don't usually go in /etc/ssh
23:16<raven523>if you didn't put a client key in ~/.ssh or configure ~/.ssh/config or /etc/ssh/ssh_config to use a client key in /etc/ssh, then it will not use any client key
23:16<mangodfruit>I know....I have installed ssh-server on both...means that both have private keys on /etc/ssh
23:17<raven523>the ssh_host_* keys in /etc/ssh are the *server* keys, not *client* keys
23:17<raven523>SSH has both server and client keys. The server keys are used so the server can prove its identity and the client can verify it (just like the certificate in TLS/SSL)
23:17<raven523>The client key, which is optional, is what the client uses to prove its identity to the server
23:18-!-bahamat [~bahamat@2600:8801:8606:8503:9565:6ae0:a42f:8aa6] has joined #debian
23:18-!-bahamat is "Brian Bennett" on #debian
23:19<raven523>by default, clients do not have keys, but some servers require a client key, and you can generate one if one doesn't exist with ssh-keygen
23:19<mangodfruit>ok...I got that...where I am confused....since I did not generate any keys on the client side....when I run ssh it connects directly ...how could this happen? so you are saying that the keys in /etc/ssh are not used by the client to connect to the server?
23:19<Sqrt{Not}>mangodfruit, in this case, think of the "server" as the distant computer, and the "client" as the person trying to log in to that computer
23:19<raven523>correcty
23:20<raven523>does it ask you for a password?
23:20<mangodfruit>yes
23:20<raven523>then it uses a password to verify the client's identity because it doesn't have a key
23:21<mangodfruit>only password! or does it also use the keys on /etc/
23:21<mangodfruit>?
23:22<Sqrt{Not}>if you set up the client's ssh key correctly, then you don't use passwords to login to the "server" anymore
23:22<raven523>only password. If you run ssh on this machine to connect to another machine, then it doesn't use this machine's keys in /etc/ssh (unless you explicitly configured it to do that)
23:24<Sqrt{Not}>!ssh without password
23:24<dpkg>(1) on the client: ssh-keygen -t rsa (2) ssh-copy-id server.example.com. Ask me about <keychain> and <ssh-askpass> for ways of storing your ssh key's passphrase between uses. If you are wanting to use ssh to allow root logins for rsync backups (or something similar to that) then you might want to limit what this key can do and from where you can use it, see http://www.nanonanonano.net/linux/rootrsync for one approach.

23:27<mangodfruit>I got that.....sorry....I understand the part when you use the ssh-keygen that you will not use a password.....where I am confused right now.....I have deleted the .ssh on the client and server home directory.....so I have no private keys on the client...but when I run ssh mang@ipaddresssofserver ....it actually connects to the server!... and under the .ssh folder there is no public key on the client still
23:27<Sqrt{Not}>do you have to login with a password still?
23:28<mangodfruit>yes....but I though that even with a password a private key is still required no?
23:29<Sqrt{Not}>no
23:29<mangodfruit>ssh uses both private and public keys to operate? no?
23:29<mangodfruit>ok....

23:30<Sqrt{Not}>using a password is the old way. There are 2 different crypto things happening here: (1) the data is encrypted while it is transferred, (2) optionally you can use a private/public key pair to login your user to the remote server
23:31<mangodfruit>ok....obviously the second one is better and safer I guess?
23:31<darkphysics>correct
23:32<Sqrt{Not}>it is not a choice of one or the other.

23:32<Sqrt{Not}>you want to encrypt all the data, all the time, but, separate from that, it is much safer to authenticate the user via a public/private key, than with a password
23:33<mangodfruit>ok.....it is much clearer now.....have a second question pls
23:33<Sqrt{Not}>one part protects the data from eavesdropping on the wire; the other part protects the server from people who are not you, guessing your password and getting access to the server
23:37<mangodfruit>on previous debian versions 10.x ...and as far as I recall, I was able to connect to a server with ssh as root ....now on debian 10.11 I cannot do that....under /etc/ssh/ssh_config there is no comment related to root to enable it?
23:38<raven523>the server's config is /etc/ssh/sshd_config (ssh_config is for clients)
23:39<Sqrt{Not}>you know it is a REALLY bad idea to ssh as root?
23:39<mangodfruit>I am just learning...I know....just trying different thinds

23:42<r4fkramer>Hi all, please, I just accidentally deleted an entire debian partition, with lots of valuable data on it.
23:42<r4fkramer>Please, are there any safe options in LIVE mode that I can use to try to recover my data?

23:42<r4fkramer>I had problems with the test disk, and besides me, several also report bugs in this system that have not yet been resolved, so I don't want this option anymore, which for me is not reliable.
23:43<sney>!gpart
23:43<dpkg>Gpart is a tool to recover the primary partition table of PC-type disks. It can also restore the types, sizes and locations of deleted partitions. http://home.pages.de/~michab/gpart/ Not to be confused with <gparted>. See also <testdisk>.
23:43<r4fkramer>risking losing valuable personal data is a nightmare. This hd was formatted twice, so I don't know if I still have a chance, but I need to try.
23:43<sney>this is an example that dpkg knows about, I have never used it so don't ask me to explain it
23:44<sney>otherwise, restore a backup.
23:44<sussudio>r4fkramer: dd copy the contents to another disk before you start fucking more with it. something you should have done beforehand.
23:45<Sqrt{Not}>mangodfruit, the reason you can still connect even after you deleted the things under the "client" machines .ssh, is because the connection part of the crypto uses the server's keys for the transit encryption.
23:45<Sqrt{Not}>mangodfruit, so what you have accomplished by deleting those keys from the local machine, is to make it not work very well as an ssh SERVER.
23:45<r4fkramer>Yes, sussudio, that was my fault, and I am feeling quite idiot because of that.
23:45<r4fkramer>Please, sussudio, do you know any ISO installation to recover data ?
23:46<sussudio>no.
23:47<sussudio>i don't know if rescatux has anything. there's probably similar things out there.

23:48<r4fkramer>I used rescatux yesterday, but I really don't remember if there is this resources on it. Anyway I gonna try System Rescue, an Arch based live DVD for this purpose. Thank you very much anyway
23:49<awal1>r4fkramer, have you thought on photorec from testdisk?
23:49<awal1>,v testdisk
23:49<judd>Package: testdisk on amd64 -- stretch: 7.0-3; buster: 7.0-3+b4; bullseye: 7.1-5+b1; bookworm: 7.1-5+b2; sid: 7.1-5+b2
23:50<r4fkramer>No awal1, test disk is very buggy and not efficient for tons of cases. I've been reading about it in some linux forums and it doesn't motivate me to use it anymore
23:50<r4fkramer>photorec is in rescatux
23:51<r4fkramer>I can use photorec through rescatux, but I never used photorec. Do you know about its efficiency ?
23:51<awal1>i used photorec that comes in testdisk in the past and it did a good job form me
23:51<awal1>i used it to recover an external hard drive
23:52<r4fkramer>awal1, did you use it to recover data specifically ?
23:52<awal1>well, the drive i recuperated was corrupted not formatted
23:52<awal1>important precision ^
23:53<awal1>so , not sure if efficient for a formatted on
23:53<r4fkramer>hum, so it is a different case.....
23:53<r4fkramer>Anyway I gonna try it now through rescatux, for this live system recovered my grub
23:54<awal1>yours is formatted twice you said?
23:54<awal1>your drive ^
23:54<r4fkramer>yes, and that is making me afraid
