22:27|-|fredy [] has joined #linode
22:28<fredy>After months of stability, my linode keeps stopping today. Any troubles on host 53?
22:30<fredy>init_new_context_skas - new_mm failed, errno = -24
22:30<fredy>was the last message before one freeze.
22:39<warewolf>that sounds decidedly unhealthy
22:39<warewolf>I'd open a support ticket
22:41<fredy>I just opened such a ticket. Good idea. I hope.
22:41<fredy>Googling didn't find much re that error.
22:41<fredy>I did find a match in an earlier IRC session:
22:44<brocktice>fredy: I was transferring tons of junk off of my linode on 53 today :(
22:44<brocktice>might have been the cause
22:44<brocktice>although you should have some minimum resources guaranteed
22:45<fredy>Three times today I manually booted my linode, only to have it go down again within minutes. Twice about 4 hours ago, once again just now.
22:45<fredy>Does that overlap your big transfer job?
22:45<brocktice>no, it was well before that
22:45[~]brocktice shrugs
22:46<brocktice>good luck, and good night
22:46<fredy>I notice that my config has "latest 2.4" for the kernel. Is that bad practice? (I don't recall when if ever I chose that)
22:47<Battousai>more of a preference thing, really
22:47<Battousai>i wouldn't say it's bad practice
22:47<eFUDd>so, uhm, fredy, are you almost out of mmeory on your linode?
22:47<eFUDd>and did you get any other errors other than what you showed above?
22:48<eFUDd>also, are you on a li-100 or sompn?
22:48<fredy>The thing hardly stays up long enough to do any forensics. I don't know about other errors. I didn't see any others.
22:49<fredy>I'm not hip to the jive. "li-100"? "sompn"?
22:50<fredy>I've got whatever comes with 300MB RAM, 9GB disk.
22:51<fredy>How can I be out of memory? I'm sure I set up a swap device. I don't know if it's been paging much.
22:51<eFUDd>god mmu.c is nasty to read.
22:52<fredy>Hmmm, not a very *big* swap device though.
22:53<fredy>If I boot single user, is there a good way to check if I've been running out of virtual mem?
22:55<fredy>I suppose I could boot full, ssh in, and run top until it freezes.
22:56<eFUDd>probably some uml bug
23:02<fredy>I booted and I'm watching top output. Still not using any swap. But only 20MB of "real" RAM free.
23:03<fredy>OK, now it's doing some paging.
23:04<fredy>And it just froze again. Dammit.
23:11<fredy>fork: Cannot allocate memory
23:17<fredy>I'm going to try the "latest 2.6" kernel.
23:17<fredy>Hmmm, ssh acting weird.
23:20<fredy>WTF. I change to 2.6 and now ssh is giving me "Permission denied".
23:21<@linbot>New news from forums: AFS Support in Kernel? in Feature Request/Bug Report <>
23:31<fredy>Is LVM not built into the 2.6 kernels?
