01:17<antiraza>random question:
01:17<antiraza>when i run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
01:17<antiraza>the process seems to hang
01:18<antiraza>0% [Connecting to security.ubuntu.com (2001:67c:1360:8001::21)]
01:18<antiraza>it'll stay that way for quite some time
01:18<antiraza>tens of minutes
01:18<antiraza>anyone ever seen this before?
01:18<retro|blah>Yes.
01:19<antiraza>is it more likely something at my end or the ubuntu servers?
01:19<Ikaros>Check both, actually. Start by checking your end, check if you can communicate with any other IPv6 servers.
01:19<antiraza>got it
01:19<Ikaros>If you can't, then it may very well be on your end.
01:20-!-Shesh [~Eman@4JHAACFWS.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []

01:21<Ikaros>Usually I'll ping6 sites I know are IPv6-enabled, such as Google.
01:21<antiraza>yeah
01:21<antiraza>it's my end
01:21<antiraza>oh no wait
01:21<antiraza>there she blows
01:21<antiraza>yeah -- not my end
01:21<antiraza>or atleast i can ping ipv6 google
01:21<Ikaros>OK now see if you can run that apt-get update again and see what happens.
01:21<arlen>I get that at least once a week with security.ubuntu
01:22<arlen>with multiple servers in different data centers
01:22<antiraza>same, stuck at 0%
01:22<Ikaros>Another thing to know is precisely what arlen is suggesting - sometimes the IPv6 routing of those Ubuntu servers is crappily done, more down than up.
01:23<antiraza>yeah i suspect that -- i can't ping that IP
01:23<arlen>usually clears up an hour later
01:23<Ikaros>Best solution is time.
01:23<antiraza>copy that
01:23<antiraza>it's been happening over the course of the day
01:23<antiraza>but i'll check tomorrow -- appreciate the advice
01:24<Ikaros>If it still falls flat on its face though
01:25<arlen>could replace it with mirrors.linode.com for the time being
01:25<Ikaros>You may have to alter things in terms of mirrors. Although I don't usually recommend replacing the security repos in this way (matter of fact I highly discourage it), you could try Linode's mirror.
01:25<arlen>but then I'd switch it back later
01:26<Ikaros>Yeah. Temporary, last-resort measure only, in case the primary security mirror fails like that.
01:26<arlen>Ikaros and I are sharing the same brain tonight
01:26<Ikaros>But yeah the Debian and Ubuntu primary mirrors can be really, REALLY finicky over IPv6.
01:27<Ikaros>And that more often than not causes package updates to stall in the manner you experienced, and leaving people going "...wtf?"
01:29<Ikaros>arlen iirc this was an even bigger problem in the infancy of IPv6 rollout with Debian mirrors, wasn't it?
01:30<arlen>think so yeah
01:30<Ikaros>Just could not keep the IPv6 route going
01:30<Ikaros>Speaking of IPv6...
01:30*Ikaros glares at Google for taking the option of whether or not to use IPv6 out of their browser
01:32<Ikaros>I actually have a number of streaming sites that perform exponentially better over IPv4, and that play smoothest in Chrome. I'm now having to run a local forward proxy on a local VM with IPv6 disabled just to achieve that. Turds...
01:36<Peng>Ughh
01:36*Peng also glares at Google
01:37<Peng>When i have to visit a website over IPv4, i firewall a large chunk of AWS's IPv6 space. :|
01:37<Peng>a certain website
01:38<Ikaros>Well I will say my forward proxy setup works very well at the very least.
01:38<Ikaros>Forcing Chrome to use it
01:39<Ikaros>Just sucks I have to do that in the first damn place
01:40<Ikaros>Ok anyway I'm going to try to make a half-assed attempt to sleep again. Kinda hard when it's in the upper 80s in your own bedroom :/

02:03<millisa>Thousands. Millions of Admins
02:04<Cromulent>I'm kinda glad my ISP doesn't support IPv6 when I hear about some of the problems it causes
02:05<Cromulent>I have no idea if my websites actually work over IPv6 though - it would be useful if Google Webmaster Console showed if the site was working over both IPv4 and IPv6 and gave a warning if it wasn't
02:06<FluffyFoxeh>what's really cool about IPv6 is everything gets a link-local IP address with zero configuration at all, so you can instantly connect to other computers on the network
02:06<FluffyFoxeh>like this
02:06<FluffyFoxeh>john@oblivion:~$ ping6 fe80::91e7:1d36:bf57:a62b
02:06<FluffyFoxeh>connect: Invalid argument
02:07<FluffyFoxeh>oh..

02:09<Cromulent>I don't do much LAN based networking but I can see how that would be useful
02:09<Cromulent>the only thing I use on my LAN is a NAS and a printer
02:09<FluffyFoxeh>i was half-making a joke because for reasons I don't understand, it doesn't even work by default unless you explicitly specify the interface
02:09<Cromulent>oh OK - well I didn't get it :)
02:10<FluffyFoxeh>(if anyone does know why that happens, I'd be interested to know)
02:11<Peng>Because the same range is used on every interface, so it can't know. And it doesn't bother to guess.
02:12<FluffyFoxeh>I see
02:12<Peng>Hmm. What happens if you have multiple IPv4 interfaces using overlapping RFC 1918 space?
02:13<FluffyFoxeh>I'm not sure if it will let you
02:14<Peng>Well, IPv6 lets you, but makes it difficult to use by forcing you to specify the interface everywhere. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
02:14<Peng>FUN
02:14<FluffyFoxeh>to be honest I see zero benefit to using it at home
02:15<FluffyFoxeh>in the LAN, specifically
02:15<FluffyFoxeh>I like my IPv4 LAN with addresses I can remember

02:28<ky_>What's the best way to "upgrade/upsize" my Linode with the most minimum downtime?
02:28<Eugene>ky_ - easiest? Take a downtime and push the resize button. Minimum downtime? Quiesce your I/O and do a live Clone to a new, bigger Linode; then do an IP swap.
02:29<Eugene>(or use a Backups snapshot)
02:32<ky_>I guess the cloning and swapping of IP will be the best to minimise downtime. Thanks Eugene!

14:34<learner>can anyone give me a good link to explain how to send encrypted email correctly?
14:42<yohomer>lerner: you can encrypt the email package with pgp/gpg; and/or the transmission with TLS; and you should understand the difference.
14:46<yohomer>oops; @learner ^^^^
14:48<learner>yohomer, i'm not about encrypting the email, i'm talking about encrypted transfer
14:49<learner>ie. say I'm emailing to google, I'd like the communication to google to be encrypted so only google gets to read the message sent
14:49<learner>yohomer, anyway thanks
14:49<yohomer>Are you attempting to configure your MTA?
14:51<kyhwana>learner: look at your MTA (postfix/exim) docs on how to do that

14:53<learner>kyhwana, do i need to get a properly signed key for that?
14:54<dwfreed>you don't, but if you want google to send you mail that is transport encrypted, you do
14:55<yohomer>self-signed ssl certs should work in most cases I think.
14:55<learner>kyhwana, is this like getting an ssl cert for web, or do i generate a key for postfix and just say smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt or smtp_enforce_tls=yes
14:55<dwfreed>a self-signed certificate is pretty useless
14:56<kyhwana>learner: er, you're sending mail, so you just want to verify the server that you're sending to's cert
14:56<kyhwana>the postfix docs should tell you how to only send mail over TLS to other hosts
14:57<learner>kyhwana, so who actually does create the encrypted pipeline for the communcation between two servers, the recepient?
14:57<dwfreed>the sender
14:57<dwfreed>as is the case in all uses of TLS
14:57<learner>kyhwana, ok imma hit the docs and see if i can figure this out
14:58<learner>ty kyhwana, dwfreed and yohomer
14:58<yohomer>enjoy the docs :) be patient ;-}

23:23-!-mode/#linode [+l 326] by ChanServ
23:25<arlen>what do you mean
23:26<nate>seean: That's handled by DNS, did you register a domain name at a registrar? You can configure it w/ linodes nameservers
23:29<arlen>if you mean you want http://ip to redirect to http://domain when someone enters that into their browser then it's the same as setting up a 301/302 server block with your web server of choice
23:29<seean>activitylife.info / 45.33.39.71 have a look at these the IP load only the index
