#linode IRC Logs for 2017-02-22

---Logopened Wed Feb 22 00:00:55 2017
00:01<FluffyKitteh>surely there's a TOTP program that runs on something other than a phone
00:01<Ikaros>I suppose the good thing with iPhones is the fact that I can back up important data regularly automatically when connected to wifi, and on top of that I can also include the keychain in that backup...so if I did have to wipe a phone or restore it to another iPhone device, I could do so with relative impunity.
00:02<FluffyKitteh>android used to be fine for data management but they removed mass storage and now it's fucking awful
00:02<FluffyKitteh>I don't even bother transferring things to my phone or vice versa anymore
00:02<Ikaros>I'm still going to replace it though...as right now it's working but I've no guarantee it'll continue to function.
00:02<Ikaros>Not with the way it had been behaving

00:59<Cromulent>nothing we can do here - this is the user community - you'll just have to wait I'm afraid
00:59<UKn0Me>takes me 3 hours to just think about being productive
01:00<millisa>the extra load from the atlanta issue tonight probably didn't help the queues
01:02<millisa>dude1: if it's a question that isn't specific to your account, maybe someone here might know the answer?
01:02<FluffyKitteh> indeed
01:04<dude1>can't access my site (tokyo2 datacenter)

01:06<millisa>I'm assuming you are talking about a web server when you say 'my site'. Is your web service running?
01:08<dude1>sry,how to make sure is the web service is running?

01:16<millisa>let's see if we can figure out what distribution you are using. cat /etc/*release;cat /etc/issue;
01:17<millisa>we're looking for something like 'ubuntu' or 'centos' or 'debian' along with the version
01:18<dude1>centos
01:18<millisa>ok then. cat /etc/redhat-release
01:19<dude1>centos 6.8
01:20<millisa>great. you said it was a LNMP stack earlier; hopefully there's an init script for it. /etc/init.d/nginx status
01:22<dude1>thank u,man.after I reload the nginx in my panel,I can access my site now, thank u.
01:22<millisa>glad you got there

01:22<millisa>it's probably worth figuring out why it wasn't running.

02:06<millisa>it goes.
02:06<jack_>if i get Linode 1GB, how many many domains can i use in it?
02:07<millisa>Somewhere between 1 and tens of thousands.
02:07<millisa>It really depends on what you are hosting, how busy those sites are, what they do, how much resources they need.
02:07<millisa>It'd be hard for anyone here to guess a number without knowing the sites
02:08<rsdehart>however, there is no artificial limit imposed by Linode
02:09<millisa>all natural limits with no preservatives
02:10<jack_>The number of domains is not limited of Any package?
02:10<Peng>Correct.
02:11<jack_>another question, my 3domains in bluehost, how can I do ?
02:13<millisa>Well, there is this guide: https://www.linode.com/docs/migrate-to-linode/migrate-from-shared-hosting-to-linode If you aren't familiar with Linode though, you probably want to look through the getting started guide https://www.linode.com/docs/getting-started
02:14<jack_>ok, thanks
02:15<jack_>How many kinds of payment?
02:15<millisa>https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/billing-and-payments#payment-methods
02:16<jack_>ok , thanks
02:18<JeremyE77>Why did Linode assign a different serial number to my zone when I xfer'd it? Should I care? I feel like i should.
02:18<Peng>JeremyE77: Like, did you do the "import a master zone" thing or the "create a slave zone" thing? THe latter shouldn't change the SOA. Or anything else.
02:18<JeremyE77>oh, I did it wrong.
02:19<grawity>if you imported it to Linode as a master zone, then the serial number changes because it's really up to the implementation
02:19<grawity>though it certainly shouldn't go much lower than the original

02:22<FluffyKitteh>isn't the serial number always monotonic
02:22<Ikaros>All I know is it best be in the recommended format.
02:22<Cromulent>oh well at least I did a backup right before I screwed up my system
02:22<Ikaros>:P
02:23<grawity>FluffyKitteh: except when it's date-based, or randomly incrementing, or always zero
02:23<FluffyKitteh>if it's date based it'll never decrease
02:24<grawity>it's increasing, just not exactly monotonically
02:25<FluffyKitteh>monotonic means that it either only increases or only decreases

03:04<millisa>http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/MySQL.Procedural.Importing.External.Repl.html
03:04<praetorian>of course if you have it internet facng, you should be careful of firewalling it correctly
03:04<millisa>though I guess that's more about replicating it as a slave; not sure you can do master master with rds?
03:06<Guest1355>If I m updating anything on one server then it should be also update on other server means in ec2 server and linode server both.
03:06<Guest1355>So what will be the solution?

07:45<Jeroen_Nexibeo>We're currently hosting most of our websites on romarg.ro
07:45<Jeroen_Nexibeo>a VPN with cPAnel
07:45<Jeroen_Nexibeo>VPS I mean
07:45<Jeroen_Nexibeo>we're thinking to move to a linode8 VPS with managed hosting
07:46<Jeroen_Nexibeo>your site told me you can do the migration if we commit 3+ months
07:46<Jeroen_Nexibeo>how to best approach this
07:46<DrJ>umm... where did you read that?
07:46<Jeroen_Nexibeo>https://www.linode.com/managed
07:47<Jeroen_Nexibeo> Free site migrations With a three-month Linode Managed commitment, you get two complimentary, standard site migrations performed by our Professional Services team. Additional migrations are available at reduced rates. Contact us for details
07:47<DrJ>ah, yes
07:47<DrJ>just so you know, that service is $100/month/Linode + the cost of the linode itself
07:47<Jeroen_Nexibeo>yep
07:48<Jeroen_Nexibeo>that's a very fair price
07:48<DrJ>:)
07:48<DrJ>just making sure... many people come in here thinking it comes with the standard linode VPS rate and /quit almost immediatly when they find out it's $100/month extra
07:48<DrJ>anyway, what is your question?
07:48<Jeroen_Nexibeo>yeah.. I think it's fair
07:49<Jeroen_Nexibeo>I believe it's fairly easy to migrate from Cpanel to Cpanel.. Cpanel has a feature for this..
07:49<Jeroen_Nexibeo>Can you support us in thia
07:49<Jeroen_Nexibeo>*this
07:49<DrJ>yea, I don't use cpanel but they should have a backup/export
07:50<nate>Jeroen_Nexibeo: They probably will but for sanity you'll prob want to try and hash everything out with them over support tickets
07:50<nate>most of us in here are just fellow users
07:50<nate>users/customers/etc
07:50<Jeroen_Nexibeo>ohh ok
07:50<Jeroen_Nexibeo>:-)
07:50<Jeroen_Nexibeo>I thought this is the helpdesk :-P
07:50<Jeroen_Nexibeo>lol
07:50<DrJ>unofficial :)
07:50<nate>A community help desk
07:50<Jeroen_Nexibeo>Very nice though
07:51<nate>linode staff are in here (they're the @ op'd people)
07:51<nate>but if they're not responding quickly in here they're prob busy with tickets
07:51<Jeroen_Nexibeo>ok.. I'll shoot in a ticket just to make sure then
07:51<DrJ>people here can guide you in the right direction
07:51<nate>But I imagine, assuming the cPanel on your existing system isn't super out of date, you'll probably be able to stream line it largely yourself using cPanel's internal export/import stuff
07:52<Jeroen_Nexibeo>yes..
07:52<DrJ>yea, shouldn't really need much help
07:52<nate>at most you might just have to wait for linode to at least do the initial preparation of a managed system for you (not sure if they automate it or)
07:52<Jeroen_Nexibeo>So how about Linode.. You enjoy their service.. better then digital ocean or other alternatives?
07:52<Jeroen_Nexibeo>cool
07:52<DrJ>going to get a biased answer to that here
07:52<DrJ>but yes, digital ocean sucks
07:52<Jeroen_Nexibeo>haha
07:52<Jeroen_Nexibeo>I figured..
07:52<DrJ>In fact, I recently moved all my remaining droplets from them to Linode
07:53<nate>price to hardware is pretty similar of most, linode's hardware benches a bit better last I saw, though my experience with DO's support was dreadful enough I quit everything I had with them so
07:53<DrJ>of which I only had $3 because they were small $5 plans that Linode now offers

11:22<Imam>hello there
11:22<relidy>Imam: You're able to install and configure Wordpress on a Linode, yes, however Linode provides the bare VPS and doing that is up to you.
11:22<Imam>is it auto-install system?
11:22<relidy>No

11:23<relidy>There are "StackScripts" that might get you started down the right path and automate some of it for you, though: https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/stackscripts
11:23<@mcintosh>you can use stackscripts to automate the installation of something like WordPress: https://www.linode.com/stackscripts/view/12

11:25<Imam>ok, My blog is hosted at godaddy. would you help in migrating or i may be needed to do myself?
11:27<Imam>where are you man?
11:27<@mcintosh>Imam: you could pay our professional services team for a migration: https://www.linode.com/professional-services
11:28<@mcintosh>or, if you commit to 3 months of Linode Managed ($100 per month per Linode) you get a migration for free: https://www.linode.com/managed
11:29<Imam>ok
11:29<Imam>What sort of technicalities is required to manage your server. I currently use shared plan of godaddy
11:31<@mcintosh>you generally need some experience using Linux, though if you're interested in learning it you can probably get by from reading documentation
11:32<Imam>How much visitors can carry your 5 USD/month plan
11:33<@mcintosh>there is no set number of visitors it could handle - it will vary greatly depending on your configuration
11:33<@mcintosh>the easiest way to do it is to smart small and then scale up (or or ideally, out) if you need more resources
11:33<Imam>which type configuration?
11:34<@nbrewer>Imam: the configuration of your web server, database, etc - whatever is actually serving up your website.
11:35<Imam>ok, I am from India, Do you accept payment in INR?
11:36<@nbrewer>we only accept payment in USD.
11:36<csnxs>as long as it can be converted to USD on it's way there
11:36<Imam>is it possible to send money from my indian bank account?

11:39<Imam>I mean toll free
11:39<@nbrewer>we do offer 24/7 phone support

22:53<rsdehart>!cpanel
22:53<linbot>Install cPanel on CentOS: https://www.linode.com/docs/websites/cms/cpanel-on-centos Linode does not sell cPanel licenses, but it's provided free to Linode Managed customers: https://www.linode.com/managed Or try a free panel like Webmin: https://www.linode.com/docs/websites/cms/webmin-control-panel Or just use the command line: https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/linode-beginners-guide/
22:54<dwfreed>if you don't pay for Managed, you get a Linux server that you have full root access to

22:55<Guest1438>i can pay

22:57<dwfreed>Linode is not a traditional web host; you're responsible for maintaining the server, including installing things like Apache, etc
22:57<dwfreed>you can certainly install cPanel and let cPanel do that for you if you want
