00:35<kyhwana>aHmm
00:37<bdube>fuck. I had a project that would have lived and thrived on linode but $work said no.
00:37<bdube>no not to linode, but to the project
00:44<joecool|mobile>bdube: make better powerpoint next time
00:46<bdube>joecool|mobile: it's funny that that would have sold it, when the whole point of the project (for me) was because I hate office suite type products
00:46<joecool|mobile>Lol
00:47<joecool|mobile>Oh well send out creative macros
00:48<bdube>macros and shit was the answer I got instead of the project I proposed
00:49<bdube>which won't even work because we're not all even on the same version of the fucking office suite I hate

03:48<dwfreed>large outages are easily noticed by Linode's monitoring; routing issues to certain parts of the Internet, not so much
03:49<Fuegas>I know, usually they notify us within 5 minutes of an outage, but this time it takes too long for them to even detect it.
03:49<Ikaros>If there was anything to detect on their end.
03:49<Fuegas>As far as I can debug it seems there is an issue with the network on the host itself
03:49<dwfreed>if you pastebin the mtr reports and link them here, we might be able to save you some time

04:02<Fuegas>@dwfreed: I think we have the issue. Someone else on the same host had similar issues so we investigated further and we found that eth0 stopped working. Via lish we restarted it and the connectivity returned. But it seems multiple nodes on that host had the same issue.
04:04<Ikaros>Yeah because I was going to say, with your mtr, the only thing NOT responding was your node.
04:05<dwfreed>Ikaros: return could have gotten lost somewhere
04:05<Ikaros>Perhaps.
04:05<dwfreed>Fuegas: could be any number of things not related to the host at all
04:07<Fuegas>dwfreed: any number of things yes, but multiple nodes on the same host that went down at the same time with the same issues does give me the suggestion it's related to the host.
04:14<dwfreed>unlikely

11:59<linbot>LISH allows you to perform certain actions without having to log in to the Linode Manager. LISH's primary function is to allow you to access your Linode's console, even if networking is disabled. https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/using-the-linode-shell-lish

14:00<wc123l>Jonathan thank you, we just received a rather "blunt" reply, telling us to call next time for critical issues (even though we updated the ticket 4 times) - is this a new policy? (as we've never been requested to call in before), or can we just say that support failed to scan & identify ticket priority effectively today?
14:02<jiggawattz>oshit

14:03<dwfreed>wc123l: updating tickets moves you to the back of the queue; Linode responds to tickets in order of last update
14:04<@caker>dwfreed: that is not the case as of maybe a year or so ago
14:04<dwfreed>wc123l: a call will always get a faster response, because it's much more of an interrupt

14:13<wc123l>anyhow, we've been with linode for some years now, and we've stuck with them through better and worse, we have never never needed to call in, EVER. 15:19<sparky4_>Hi, I have a question on how VPS works for distributed teams. If I setup a linux server on a linode node, how do I make it accessible to other users in my team? Do I have to share the admin credentials of linode account?
15:20<grawity>you can add sub-accounts which can handle technical stuff (I think anything billing-related is limited to the main user)
15:22<ang>sparky4_, are you talking about the linode itself or the management console?

15:23<sparky4_>@ang - yes linode itself. I can be the admin but I want other users to access servers that I put on linode
15:23<grawity>the stuff you put on the linode itself depends entirely on you
15:23<ang>sparky4_, so make them their own accounts and let them ssh in
15:23<grawity>you want others to do Linux management stuff – you use the regular Linux `useradd`, `sudo`, etc.
15:23<grawity>you want them to manage MySQL – you give them a MySQL account
15:24-!-mode/#linode [+l 353] by ChanServ
15:25<jamesb>I've recently started having a problem staying signed in at manager.linode.com ... sporadically (and frequently) it drops me back to the sign-on page. I get the same result using Chromium, Chrome and Firefox, in normal or incognito modes, and with all extensions disabled ... Googling has so far turned up ... not much. Anyone else seeing this?
15:25<sparky4_>got it. I will create accounts on the individual apps (mysql, etc) and create seperate accts for accessing linode. Where do I create those sub accounts for them to ssh?
15:26<grawity>useradd
15:26<grawity>it's not a Linode problem, it's Linux administration
15:27<grawity>for that matter, you should useradd an account for yourself as well
15:27<grawity>not very wise to do everything as root

15:27<sparky4_>perhaps I'm not clear. I know that I have to add linux accts for them. My question, how do they initially connect to the linode host in the first place? I don't want them to share my admin/billing acct creds.
15:28<arlen>they connect with ssh
15:28<grawity>they don't *need* to connect to the linode *host* generally
15:29<grawity>except for things like emergency console access via Lish
15:29-!-mode/#linode [+l 354] by ChanServ
15:29<grawity>instead they connect directly to your linode VPS
15:29<grawity>using ssh and the Linux accounts you add
15:29<ang>sparky4_, no different than what you'd do with a physical server
15:31<sparky4_>I see. Does that mean I have to secure the linux host very well since it is visible to world? I had thought originally that I have to setup a VPN server on VPS so that other users can VPN into it.
15:31<grawity>it's connected directly to the public Internet
15:32<grawity>(...besides, if it wasn't, how would you reach the VPN service itself?)
15:32<grawity>don't have a good link to the basics, but setting up a firewall like iptables is a good start
