00:36<Dhaval_>Hi all. I have confusion that Linode 12GB id dedicated server or shared hosting
00:37<Celti>Linodes are neither, they are virtual servers.
00:37<Celti>You could call them shared hosting but that's not the typical definition of shared hosting.

00:38<Celti>Yes. You have root on your Linode and can do anything you want with it (subject to the terms of service).
00:39<millisa>For that matter you are expected to use root in order to secure your system
00:40<millisa>Check out - it'll give you some idea of what it's like to spin up an instance

01:01<millisa>the usually work tickets in order; if they requested more info and you sent it in, then watch your mailbox; they'll mail if they need anything else or when they get you setup
01:01<millisa>er, they usually...
01:01<Dhaval_>One simple question is can I user linux command as root user in Linode 12GB plan. Actually I have plan to move all my sites to Linode and make sure that I can run command form my scripting language before I will go for that plan
01:02<millisa>Dhaval_: you have root access to all your linodes.
01:02<millisa>Dhaval_: it's not like shared hosting; they are virtual private servers
01:02<wheremyboxat>lol I said that wrong actually, I uploaded through the link given in the email, and I'm afraid it didn't get submitted properly...after I uploaded it didn't have a "finalizing" your info has been submitted type of thing if that makes sense

01:54<Nancy>im a beginner, wanna know if linode is friendly for me to use
01:56<millisa>It's no different than managing a physical linux system. Have you looked through the getting started guide? There is quite a bit of good linode documentation
02:02<Nancy>is it compatible with magento
02:03<millisa>You get root access to a linux system, anything you can (legally) run on a linux system you can get going at linode. There's a guide for magento:
02:04<millisa>Or if you prefer centos

02:05<Nancy>is this enough?
02:05<Nancy>and is it a vps or shared hosting?
02:05<millisa>It's a vps.
02:06<millisa>The $5 plan might be slim for magento. The linode docs suggest a 4gb instance
02:06<millisa>If you just wanted to test with it though, it might work on the $5 plan
02:07<Nancy>so you suggest 10$/mo?
02:07<millisa>The 4gb instance is $20 isn't it?
02:07<Nancy>i just wanna build a small business
02:08<Nancy>not more than 2000 visitors per day
02:08<Nancy>and will you help me to install magento since i do not know
02:08<millisa>You could try the smaller instance; it might work. It is easy to resize a linode upwards if you need to
02:09<millisa>Those docs walk you through all the steps; people in this chat are pretty helpful with specific questions, but they aren't going to give you every step like those docs will
02:10<millisa>if you want someone else to do it for you, you may be interested in the professional services ( ).

02:26<bigJ>thanks linbot
02:26<millisa>A majority of the people in here probably prefer the command line over a panel, but people use other control panels on linode. There are some docs here (webmin is in there somewhere)
02:27<bigJ>may i know the limit of bandwidth for the starter plan?
02:28<millisa>The transfer and network in/out are on the pricing page for each plan:
02:28<bigJ>is it already manage by linode?
02:28<millisa>Is what managed?
02:29<bigJ>the server, is it already manage by linode after purchase?
02:30<bigJ>i mean the security and load balancing of it

02:30-!-KindOne_ is now known as KindOne
02:30-!-mode/#linode [+l 341] by ChanServ
02:30<millisa>Not really. Linodes are mostly unmanaged - they'll make sure the physical host stays up and such, but anything past that is really up to you. There's a managed service at that does some break/fix type things
02:32<bigJ>seems i need to login before i can check the pricing
02:32<millisa>It shouldn't be asking for a login for that
02:33<arlen>!point millisa
02:33<linbot>arlen: Point given to millisa. (5)
02:36<bigJ>im currently comparing linode to digitalocean where to host
02:36<dcraig>get one of each
02:36<dcraig>collect 'em all
02:36<csnxs>!lick millisa
02:36<linbot>csnxs: Point given to millisa. (6)
02:36<millisa>both of them bill by the hour, it'd be cheap to compare them
02:37<bigJ>hahaha that would cost me a lot if get on of each
02:39<bigJ>i see but what will happened if i reached the limit of my plan, example i purchased it 1st of the month and i consumed the limit at 20th of the month
02:39<bigJ>will it cost me more than the plan i get?
02:40<bigJ>if i purchase the $10/mo?
02:40<millisa> - it's pretty tough to hit the limit unless you are hosting very large files
02:41<millisa>(it's cheaper to use the 2 and 4gb plans than it is to pay an overage on bandwidth for the 1gb plan)
02:42<millisa>the linode manager UI shows you how much of the bandwidth you are using and there are some simple alerts you can set to give you some headsup
02:43<bigJ>but if im near to the limit can i upgrade the plan? example i first get the $5/month plan
02:43<millisa>sure, the quota and such is prorated
02:44<millisa>resizing is easy:

11:51<Guest502>Now while restarting the server, i saw this error message -> IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
11:51<Guest502>and i know that has to be an issue with the network
11:51<Guest502>Please any help here

11:53<atian>Jay yes please refer to virtual hosts
11:53<@mcintosh>if you look at your apache error logs it should give you more detailed information than just the numeric error codes (i.e. 502, 504)
11:54<Guest502>Yes I know it won't fix the 504 errors but I meant 502 errors and that happens mostly while the ram usage is very high or the network is just slo so am suspecting it's from linode
11:55<Guest502>Okay But How do I fix this error -> IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready .
11:55<Guest502>I have or seem to have fixed the others
11:57<@mcintosh>Guest502: that error usually isn't a point of concern - are you seeing something that suggests it's impacting your services in some way?
11:58<@mcintosh>what are you seeing that suggests it's impacting your services?
11:59<Guest502>I started seeing the error few days after i noticed my server suddenly became slow a

11:59<Guest502>This is the error am seeing ----> IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
11:59<@mcintosh>that error and your server "suddenly being slow" are probably not related
11:59-!-mode/#linode [+l 347] by ChanServ
12:00<Guest502>So i want to know if it's what's causing the server to be very slow as if my internet connection is slower
12:00<Guest502>I used to think it was just me till others started complaining the website is slow THEN i knew it wasn't from my ISP
12:01<@mcintosh>it's very unlikely that it is causing that - more likely your server is running low on resources/the services need to be optimized to run more efficiently
12:01<Guest502>I also see this error ---> FastCGI sent in stderr in my nginx.error_log
12:02<@mcintosh>that would suggest an error somewhere in your nginx configuration, somewhere around the fastcgi_param line
12:03<@mcintosh>but that may not even be affecting your services, not a very descriptive error unfortunately
12:03<@mcintosh>I'd start by troubleshooting potential memory bottlenecking:
12:03<Guest502>Thanks for the link
12:03<@mcintosh>that's probably the most likely cause of the slowness
12:05<Guest502>Also, just before i zoom off to study the link you sent me, here are the fastcgi_param lines in my nginx.conf file
12:06<Guest502>fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
12:06<Guest502> fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_path_info; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param PATH_TRANSLATED $document_root$fastcgi_path_info; #fastcgi_intercept_errors on; include fastcgi_params;
12:06<Guest502>Sorry, let me use pastebin
12:06<Guest502>fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_path_info;
12:07<Guest502>fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME $fastcgi_script_name;
12:07<Guest502>PATH_TRANSLATED $document_root$fastcgi_path_info;
12:07<Guest502>fastcgi_param PATH_TRANSLATED $document_root$fastcgi_path_info;
12:07<Guest502>include fastcgi_params;
12:08<Guest502>The above are the lines. Can you spot any issue there
12:11<Guest502>Okay. Just also discovered that My CSF firewall is also complaining of Firewalld. Let me go and do something about it
12:11<ponas>usually whatever follows after "FastCGI sent in stderr" is the real error message and probably isn't indicating any nginx configuration issues if it never gave that error previously
12:11<Guest502>Thanks. Currently studying your link

14:45<mm>Hi all! hope your doing well. just had a quick question that maybe someone could answer: I need to make an ssh key for a secondary user for debian. I have never done this, someone else created my user. I have their public key.
14:45<mm>My question was, to do this..I log on via ssh, create a new dirctory for that user and then drop their keys into a shadow folder called ssh correct?
14:46<mm>if this is write, then how do I set them up with a password...
14:46<grawity>eh, close enough
14:46<grawity>normally the home directory is created along with the user itself (using `useradd -m ...`), but you can mkdir it manually
14:46<grawity>or even `cp -r /etc/skel /home/thatnewuser`
14:47<grawity>then, yes, create /home/thatnewuser/.ssh/ and put the public-key into /home/thatnewuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
14:47<grawity>afterwards, don't forget to chown everything you created
14:47<grawity>so that the user could actually edit their own stuff
14:47<mm>ok. amazing! thanks grawity. Chown is setting up the permissions correct?
14:47<grawity>the ownership specifically
14:48<grawity>`chown -R thatnewuser: /home/thatnewuser` should do it
14:48<grawity>as for the password... if y'all are using pubkeys, do you even *need* a password?
14:48<grawity>well, sure, you can set one with `passwd thatnewuser` anyway
14:49<mm>I guess not, but the person who set me up, gave me one.
14:50<mm>ok. great! thank you soo much. last question, to set thme do I need to be connect va root?
14:50<mm>via* troot

15:33<grawity>or if it's not ext3
15:33<@mcintosh>grawity: your disk has to fit within the plan before you can attempt to resize down
15:34<grawity>makes sense
15:35<@mcintosh>if it's not ext3, your options are dependent on the filesystem type (for example, you can't resize RAW disks to a smaller size -- you can resize them to a larger size, but you have to do manual work)
15:36<@mcintosh>meaning, you can resize a raw disk to a larger size, but you have to manually expand the filesystem

18:52<Eugene>Cromulent - you need to start `mysqld` manually with `--no-grant-privileges`(I think), connect to it, and manually add the grant you want
18:53<Cromulent>Eugene: ah don't worry I've got it sorted now - sorry for the bother
18:53<nate>There's an on-run k
18:54<nate>*kinda thing you can do to reset root password
18:54<Eugene>Yeah, don't lose it to begin with
18:56<relidy>That's why I set all my root passwords to '12345'
18:56<@caker>if debuntu, can get the maint user password from /etc/ somewhere ...
18:56<relidy>Just have to watch Spaceballs to remember what it is.
18:57<gparent>set it to root and hope the host verification gets the hacker confused

19:24<Cromulent>now I'm really stumped I got everything back up and working but when I create a new user and try and grant them access to the database I get "ERROR 1133 (42000): Can't find any matching row in the user table" which is weird because I'm using the exact same commands as I have used in the past and when I query mysql the user shows in the users table

23:09<jakkarth>Is this the right place to get support on an issue with my linodes?
23:10<linbot>The staff may or may not be around but if you tell us your problem then someone in here may be able to help
23:10<linbot>Sounds like ticket time! Your problem will probably be solved much faster by submitting a support ticket, rather than hoping to catch an employee's attention here.
23:11<jakkarth>Thanks Eugene. I've had a support ticket open for 90 minutes with no response. Trying to get IPs transferred from one linode to another, so not a general sysop-type support need.
23:12<Eugene>Useless bot
23:12<Eugene>You can do that without a support ticket; use the IP swap button
23:13<jakkarth>Does that swap all ipv4 and ipv6 addresses between the two linodes?
23:13<arlen>ipv4 only
