00:02<sirpengi>for a current project i'm using goaccess, and it's working out pretty well
00:02<Peng>It's not modern unless it has at least 1 MiB of JavaScript. Gzipped.

00:10<Passerby>Dang, goaccess knows how to make a good web page--and not just the looks, either. It's well organized. The program itself seems well designed, too.

00:14<frenz>can i get IPV6 /48 from you?
00:15<frenz>for dedicated server
00:15<Peng>How about a /56?
00:16<frenz>it would be great if /48
00:16<millisa>You need more than 4,722,366,482,869,645,213,696 addresses? awesome.
00:17<frenz>No that is not issue but i'm more familiar with \48 block than \56
00:17<frenz>I mean to set up it on server
00:18<millisa>I've only seen them mention /56 and /64. https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/native-ipv6-networking
00:19<dwfreed>frenz: there's not really any significant difference
00:20<frenz>Ok i think /56 is also fine for me
00:20<millisa>linode does that, just have to put in a ticket for it
00:20<frenz>they come with any package?
00:21<arlen>yup
00:21<frenz>thank you guys for your help

01:44<Ikaros>...ok I don't get this, why is it with a 4.x kernel I can't achieve more than 400 KB/sec upload to my node, but when I use a 3.x kernel it runs line speed? This just seems to be a plague on me for some reason. :x
01:45<Peng>:<
01:46<Ikaros>Seems to be any 4.x kernel I can't send at more than 400 KB/sec to

02:09<Ikaros>Ok I see what fixed it
02:09<Ikaros>For whatever reason the network driver under paravirt is mucking with it. I switched to full-virt and it's back to line speed.
02:10<Peng>:O

02:15<Ikaros>I suspect that to be a problem with the virtio network driver in the 4.x kernel in some cases. The e1000 driver used under full virt appears to not have this problem under the 4.x kernels.

10:12<trippeh>lish-frankfurt.linode.com is still sending the "wrong" ssh host key.
10:13<hawk>trippeh: has there been confirmation if it is wrong or just new?
10:14<trippeh>a op in the channel said it was going to get fixed. right now it has the same key as singapore.
10:19<trippeh>which at least gives it some legitimacy
10:19<trippeh>the key that is :)

18:36<marini>synfinatic: what do you host? (if you want to answer)
18:37<arlen>fwiw there's staff that have exit nodes, so should be fine
18:37<synfinatic>personal domain stuff (web, git, smtp, etc). tor relay. openvpn for personal use

18:39<marini>synfinatic: middle or exit relay?
18:39<synfinatic>all my employers of late have either been in the data center business (equinix) or big enough to run their own DC's (apple) so I haven't run any commercial stuff on Linode, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to someone if there was a fit
18:40<synfinatic>exit for a while. some people complained to linode and after a while I got tired of locking things down even further, so just went full middle.

18:45<marini>synfinatic: I see. What's your job man, sysadmin?
18:45<synfinatic>jack of all trades. code monkey. devops. system/network eng.
18:46<arlen>I've only had one abuse report for my middle relay cause the person couldn't read snort properly
18:47<marini>synfinatic: cool
18:48<synfinatic>yeah, and linode support in my experience would be smart enough to realize such abuse reports are non-issues once you explain it to them
18:48<synfinatic>some places are 3 strikes and you're out regardless if those complaints are valid or not
18:49<marini>I understand perfectly what you mean. I work on servers and networks as well so I can imagine. . .

20:21<smithy>does anyone here know PHP hashing functions?
20:21<Peng>No. Why?
20:21<nate>Well there's only one real 'core' one at the moment, hash(). If you're looking to do password stuff though, use password_hash()
20:22<nate>(or well specifically the password_* functions in general)
20:22<smithy>for some user passwords are not hashing to the value they have stored in the database and it's auto denying every login
20:23<nate>Might wanna pastebin your code, so we can see exactly how you're hashing and how you're verifying
20:23<smithy>ok 1 min
20:25<smithy>i removed providing the salt for password_hash function because apparently it now generates it internally
20:27<nate>It always generated it internally, if you had a static salt provided in password_hash() and you removed it, that's where you broke it
20:28<nate>if you're trying to use password_hash() as a verification method that is
20:28<nate>you'll probably want to look at password_verify() instead
20:28<nate>that uses the salt+hash from the stored hash
20:28<smithy>why then did this auth library provide a salt to password_hash
20:29<smithy>here is the function that generates a hash for new users
20:29<smithy>https://pastebin.com/tm2jxzLC
20:29<nate>probably because whoever wrote it is a tardball
20:29<nate>That was more or less one of the primary purposes of password_hash() was to provide a hashing + automatic salting model
20:30<nate>so much so that people mis-used it much like that guy that it's been removed even in PHP7
20:30<nate>or sorry apparently it's been deprecated, not removed
20:30<smithy>makes sense
20:31<smithy>if i do pass a salt to password hash is it ignored?
20:31<nate>No, but it's a bad idea. password_hash() isn't using a static salt, it's generating a random salt each time
20:32<nate>Basically look into crypt() on *nix, that's pretty much what password_hash() is, a wrapper around crypt() using 'strong' defaults
20:34<smithy>maybe there was a time where you had to pass a salt to password_hash
20:34<smithy>this is like the 3rd thing i had to change in this library...sigh
20:34<nate>not as far as I possibly remember. Like I said, password_hash() is a wrapper to crypt(), and the general purpose to that as well was an automatic salting
20:36<smithy>got it ill go through and remove any salt passing to the function and see it works
20:36<smithy>so to verify i should use password_verify() over checking to see if the hash created by password_hash matches?
20:38*dzho searches backscroll for bcrypt, doesn't see it
20:38<nate>Yeah that was the design of password_verify(), that way if you ever -did- change the algorithm to password_hash() (or it changes by default in PHP), existing hashes won't be impacted, password_hash() takes an existing hash string (the ones in the DB) and automatically runs them properly
20:41<smithy>thanks ill try it
