04:27<Knofte>Peng: indeed, much more efficient, i've roled out a few machines in Fremont and had to cancel them, it annoys me.
04:27<Knofte>Another question - Why is the location in Japan called "Tokyo 2" instead of just Tokyo?
04:27<dcraig>'cause there was Tokyo 1
04:28<dcraig>and it done filled up

07:52<good>Hello Linode
07:53<Cromulent>hi
07:53<good>My simple question is why $5 server only reserved to hourly billing?
07:53<Cromulent>all servers are hourly billing
07:54<good>Sure I am on pre-paid and pay montly
07:54<good>Is that also hourly?
07:54<Cromulent>ah you must have a really old account then - only really old accounts can pay monthly
07:54<Cromulent>yearly etc
07:55<good>I wanted to create a Linode of $5 plan but was requested to change to hourly billing first!!!
07:57<good>I am not confortable with hourly billing. Has it now become a billing standard of Linode?
07:57<good>We forget monthly, yearly etc
08:01<@jfred>You're still charged monthly with hourly billing, it's just that the calculations for how much your Linodes cost are done hourly (and you pay at the end of the month rather than the beginning)
08:02<good>Ok
08:03<@jfred>and there's a monthly cap in place for each plan, so it works out to the same amount as the old prepaid monthly plans if you have a Linode for the full month
08:04<good>I c... simple arithematics
08:05<good>Thank you

08:27<ponas>Zimsky: that's obvious!
08:27<ponas>Because it's a cloud-ready operating system that enhances security and reduces risk with multiple layers of built-in protection and provides Microsoft Azure-inspired innovation for the applications and infrastructure that power your business. It also brings flexibility and control to your datacenter while lowering costs with software-defined compute, storage, and networking—using many of the
08:27<ponas>same cloud-efficient features found in Azure datacenters.

08:29<gparent>Progress: 10%
08:30<Zimsky>gparent: ".sh"
08:30<@jfred>because nobody will be able to break in if we don't tell them how it works, right?
08:30<gparent>I still believe in extensions.
08:30<Zimsky>that's probably why they keep breaching your firewalls
08:30<Zimsky>because you're trying to run shell scripts on windows
08:31<gparent>Somebody is a few years late

13:26<spooker>thanks Peng
13:28<Peng>When you say "migrating to a new node configuration", to be clear, you just have to click some buttons and wait a little while.
13:28<Peng>Your stuff doesn't get erased or anything.
13:28<spooker>right ... I'm just thinking that adding storage would be more cost effective than adding more cores and memory
13:29<spooker>right now we're migrating users from a mail appliance to a Linode and we'll be growing the needed space for storage faster than the need for power

17:32<@caker>bob_: no. Those processors are about as fast as Intel makes them (besides desktop procs, which won't work for us). There are only two notches higher than what we're using, and their cost is way out of bounds
17:32<ajay>So I set up a linode for hosting my website and since I finished I realized I had the wrong URL. Is there a way to go back and set up the correct URL or should I just blowup that Linode and start over? ]
17:33<@caker>sounds like it would be simpler/easier to just fix your webserver config? what is the wrong URL and what is the correct URL?

17:34<@caker>clock speed is not everything, and hasn't been for decades
17:36<bob_>OVH has lower cost for 3.1 mhz instances compared to Linode 2.3 mhz instances, so therefore how are costs "out of bounds"?
17:36<@caker>desktop procs != server procs
17:36<Peng>ajay: What did you "set up"? Almost anything should be easy to fix.
17:36<bob_>Does OVH run desktop procs?
17:36<Peng>also OVH is alarmingly cheap :P
17:36<CompWizrd>bob: fewer cores on the 3.1 ghz cpu, so you need more machines to do the same work
17:36<@caker>if it's 3.1, yes.
17:37<bob_>Ok, well I am running tests to see which runs my site faster.
17:38<ajay>I set up a 2G server running with a LAMP stack on ubuntu
17:39<zifnab>ovh more than likely runs desktop cpus. they have some older, faster xeons in use still
17:39<zifnab>note: the metric you really care about is a combination of clock rate and instructions per cycle
17:39<zifnab>which...no one really releases
17:39<CompWizrd>and whether your hosting company is putting too many people on the same machine, hogging all the cpu power
17:40<zifnab>a xeon e5-2960 running at 2.7mhz is slower than a xeon e5-2960 v4 @ 2.7mhz
17:40<zifnab>the 2.7mhz means jack shit
17:40<linbot>New news from forum: Linux Tips, Tricks, Tutorials • Creating your own dynamic dns solution with linode dns & mikrotik <https://forum.linode.com/viewtopic.php?t=14765&p=73381#p73381>
17:41<CompWizrd>better question is what are you doing that you think you need a 3.1 GHz processor to run it, and if it's that cpu critical, is dedicated hosting better for you
17:42<zifnab>i have one server that, if it wasn't running a multi-threaded thing, faster cores would benefit
17:42<zifnab>but..."meh", throw more cpus at the problem
17:42<relidy>s/[mM][hH]z/GHz/
17:43<zifnab>yeah, thanks
17:43<zifnab>sorry
17:43<CompWizrd>hey, what's wrong with millihertz?!
17:43<zifnab>showing my age
17:43<zifnab>:P
17:43*caker presses the Turbo button
17:43<zifnab>i remember when it was '1000 mhz' not 'ghz'
17:43<relidy>!point caker
17:43<zifnab>...long live copperfield
17:43<linbot>relidy: Point given to caker. (8)
17:43<bob_>I will let you know the speed difference.
17:43<CompWizrd>my zx81 had two modes.. "fast" and "slow" Slow would update the screen between calculations, Fast would wait till it was done and then actually update
17:44<zifnab>caker: soooo, when are you guys upgrading to the new xeon e7-8xxx v4s?
17:44<CompWizrd>the cpu itself drove the video if i remember right
17:44<zifnab>:P
17:44<@caker>the truth hertz
17:44<CompWizrd>so does that make my zx81 the first iGPU?
17:44<zifnab>i have some rather ancient e5s at home. the cost/chip was insane at release time (close to 8k each)
17:44<zifnab>picked them up for $100 each
17:44<zifnab>"facebook rejects"
17:44<zifnab>is what i've assumed they are

17:47<CompWizrd>some project i had to do, the consultants absolutely insisted the machine had to be 8 cores, and two machines.. asked about just virtualizing it since that's the way to do it, and they insisted it needed the 16 cores total. shrugged, bought the machine. Machine never hit over a couple percent load.
17:48<CompWizrd>ran out of ram long before i ran out of disk space or cpu
17:50<CompWizrd>and thanks to oracle's licensing, had to buy a 16 core e5-2698 v3 instead of two 8 core cpu's. The $4000 cpu was cheaper than the extra oracle license.

17:50<CompWizrd>i'msorry
17:50<CompWizrd>iwontdoitagain
17:52<relidy>I seem to always be stuck with crappy software that has no idea how to make proper database queries. 95% of the load on the machine is the poor DB engine trying to respond to the worst queries ever.
17:53<CompWizrd>they also told me i'd need raid5 blah blah blah if i remember right. RAID10 on Intel S3710's worked nice..
17:53<CompWizrd>oh,and raid1 for the os, raid5 for the database, all that stuff.. like they hadn't done a server in 10 years.
