07:21<bbceg>hello. Anyone know if the IPv6 issues in London are likely to cause SMTP connections to to timeout?
07:22<grawity>from what I've read on mailing lists, it's probably IPv6 issues in Office365 that cause this
07:26<bbceg>So if we have issues with IPv6 on our server this could cause office365 problems?
07:28<bbceg>timeouts seemed to start occurring shortly after the connection issues were reported which would seem fairly conclusive. I suppose the acid test would be to try the same settings from an alternative environment.
07:31<grawity>though yeah, it does seem ipv6 is *also* broken in lonon
07:31<grawity>how did I not notice
07:32<grawity>lol the hell?
07:32<bbceg>is there a quick, easy and safe way to disable IPv6 purely to confirm what I suspect?
07:33<grawity>out of curiosity, does your linode suddenly have a 2a01:7e00:1:* address out of nowhere?
07:33-!-eyepulp [] has joined #linode

07:34<bbceg>but couldn't tell you if it came out of nowhere...
07:35<grawity>no, that's the regular one
07:41<grawity>bbceg: do check `ip -6 addr` anyway

07:41-!-eyepulp [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
07:41<bbceg>you are right, ifconfig reveals the :1 as well as the usual address
07:42<grawity>are you running bsd on a linode
07:42<grawity>but anyway, delete that address for now and see if it helps
07:42<grawity>or it might go away by itself
07:42-!-mode/#linode [+l 361] by ChanServ
07:44<bbceg>don't believe so... ok, how's it got in there? presumably that's not a "connectivity issue".
07:45<bbceg>I've confirmed that the same settings work fine outside of linode servers so it would almost certainly be down to ipv6 issues in London.
07:45<grawity>it got in there because someone's doing funky stuff with the datacenter routers
07:48<bbceg>right! Somewhat nervous to mess with it but currently causing timeouts for any websites trying to send email with office365.
07:49<grawity>is it still broken at the moment
07:49<grawity>works fine on my linodes
07:49<aforster>for those with v6 issues, check `ip -6 addr` now and look for "deprecated"
07:50<grawity>yeah, it shows up with preferred_lft 0, so I'm not gonna bother deleting it again
07:50<aforster>(should be fixed now - a bug was causing an invalid slaac advertisement)
07:50<pclissold>IPv6 timeouts on all our London servers since the network outage and IPv6 favoured for outgoing traffic. rebooting solved the problem.
07:50<aforster>cool, if you see "deprecated" under the bad prefix then you should be good to go
07:51*grawity was watching the numbers jump up and down in `watch ip -6 addr show` :D
07:51<linbot>New news from forum: General Discussion • What is linode kernel for? <>
07:52<bbceg>so if 'deprecated' they need to be removed?
07:52<grawity>if 'deprecated' they won't be used by the OS anymore and will get removed on their own, afai
07:54<bbceg>All sorted as suggested, no reboot required in my case.

08:10<Zimsky>dwfreed: am I looking at the wrong branch or something, because stuff like floodserv.c hasn't been updated in 5y
08:10<Zimsky>why not just fork atheme
08:11<dwfreed>no, FloodServ really hasn't changed in 5 years
08:11<linbot>New news from forum: General Discussion • What is linode kernel for? <>
08:12<dwfreed>master is what prod runs, develop is running on our testnet (which is private to staff); there are two FloodServ modules, one in ruby, one in C, we use the C version
08:14<dwfreed>porting all of this to Atheme would be a significant challenge, in particular because our services are directly backed by a Postgres database, and Atheme is not really designed for that
08:14<dwfreed>Atheme stores its entire database in its own memory, and is more designed for writing out flat files as a result
08:15<Zimsky>yes, the infamous opensex

09:29<pacian>dwfeed many many thanks. I have a okay level of understand of Linux, but this solution is very very important, I convinced the University where I work to allow me to create this project and I have a deadline for tomorrow to get this up and running so I am a little nervous at the slightest issue

14:15<relidy>Linode doesn't currently offer a way to increase storage without upgrading the entire plan. They're working on a block storage feature, though, and it should be hitting beta before too long. Until then, S3 is a popular choice.

16:09<nate>scotti: That's why they have the "Professional" package
16:09<nate>"managed" is more for people who want the room to work of a VPS but don't know enough to handle the sysadmin side of things
16:09<nate>so they can file a ticket going "hey can you install this package for me when you get a chance?"
16:10<scotti>I thought they just responded to downtime
16:10<scotti>they didn't do any installation
16:10<nate>Not that I recall, thought the managed page says that they'll basically, well, help "manage" things as time permits
16:10<scotti>that's just like "Service +" I guess
16:10<scotti>if they feel like doing something they might help
16:11<nate>Well I imagine it's more than "if they feel like it" so much as "hey we have a queue of people asking for managed requests, it's a served-in-line sorta thing"
16:11<scotti>it's if the sysadmin is feeling moody or not
16:11*scotti has been there

16:12<scotti>and real work in the Silicon Valley
16:12<scotti>you go work for Linode when you don't want to do Silicon Valley anymore
16:12<scotti>when you get burned out
16:12<nate>considering most people working silicon valley have to basically rob on the weekend to afford living in silicon valley, I'd rather work for linode

20:27<dwfreed>what you're referring to is called NXDOMAIN hijacking, where you get an A record instead of an NXDOMAIN for a non-existent record, which usually redirects you to an ad-riddled search page
20:27<MJCS>Yeah I need to have my network admin take a look at it because its happening when on the VPN and off
20:27<dwfreed>Google DNS does not do this, but it's possible that the ISP is intercepting all DNS queries and redirecting them through their resolvers
