02:43<dwfreed>You can create your own rescue profile
02:44<dwfreed>that said, you might have to create it from the manager at first to get the right IDs

07:26<Talha_K_>Hi .... I work for company and they are running their application on linode server ... per instructions I was making server secure through linod securing server guideline
07:26-!-mode/#linode [+l 358] by ChanServ
07:27<Talha_K_>while installing fail2ban as mentioned on linode securing server guideline ubuntu 14.04 got updated and it has not been update by company from quite a time
07:30<Talha_K_>we were not ready for update as it might break our web application which is currently used by many customers .... I search on google and found that there is way to uninstall by purging the installed packages

07:34<Meyer__>Talha_K_: What did you update? You mean eg apt-get update and apt-get upgrade?
07:35<Peng>What did you upgrade too?
07:35<Peng>to*
07:35<Peng>If it just installed small security or other patches, they're not *suppose* to break anything. They're supposed to make things less broken.
07:36-!-mode/#linode [+l 359] by ChanServ
07:36<Peng>If it upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04... well
07:36<Talha_K_>let me answer your questions one by one
07:37<Peng>Also, purging packages won't downgrade them. It will uninstall them. THAT will break things.
07:37<Talha_K_>I was installing fail2ban as per instructions through this guideline https://www.linode.com/docs/security/using-fail2ban-for-security
07:37<Peng>Downgrading packages is more complicated and often a terrible idea
07:37<Talha_K_>and this command mentioned there created the issue apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
07:38<Talha_K_>apt-get upgrade -y
07:38<Talha_K_>I have run apt-get update many times and all things went well
07:39<Talha_K_>its not updated to ubuntu 16.04
07:39<Meyer__>Talha_K_: Then you should be all good
07:40<Meyer__>Talha_K_: As Peng said Ubuntus LTS patches are very stable and will almost never break anything
07:40<Talha_K_>yes right but our application is based on LAMP stack ... so I thought any in Apache , PHP and MySql might break our applications
07:41<Talha_K_>any updated in APache*
07:41<Meyer__>Talha_K_: I very much doubt you will see any issues
07:41<Meyer__>Talha_K_: I believe if you begin trying to downgrade you will see a lot of issues
07:42<Meyer__>it is a complicated procedure and should not be done if you are unsure on what you are doing
07:42<Meyer__>if you really still feel that you want to revert then I suggest you restore your backups to the point before you did anything
07:43<Meyer__>for what is worth i run apt-get upgrade on several hundred servers weekly and I have not had any issues because of that
07:44<Meyer__>it is good to keep your servers patched
07:45<Talha_K_>ok right .... now issue is .... I found the solution through google to uninstall updated packages and I run apt-get --purge remove for udpated packages ... and it created big issue and even uninstall dpkg and apt-get also ftp also got deleted now our team is not able to push updates on server
07:46<Talha_K_>apt-get , ftp also got deleted*
07:46<Woet>Talha_K_: restore from backups and hire someone competent
07:46<mazzanet>purge...purge is bad in this instance
07:47<dzho>yeah, why did we leap from upgrading to removing with purge?
07:47<dzho>google "search term" | sh
07:48<Meyer__>Talha_K_: apt-get --purge remove removes packages
07:48<Meyer__>Talha_K_: it does NOT revert to the previous version of the package
07:48*dzho smh
07:48<Talha_K_>yes right blunder from side
07:48<Talha_K_>from my side*
07:49<mazzanet>...removes backages...and configs

10:55<mikxm55>Hi, I have a linode machine, and our building has a new server, and we wanted to make a clone of the machine image/configurations to our own server. Is there a way to export the whole machine, or even the disk used and re-use it in the new server? T
10:55<mikxm55>the destination virtualization platform is vmware. Would an export be possible from our current linode?
10:56<@mcintosh>mikxm55: you can copy an image of the Linode's disk via SSH
10:56<@mcintosh>https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/disk-images/copying-a-disk-image-over-ssh
10:58<mikxm55>but how would that disk be usable on our server? I'm sure it still has all the linode's configurations. Is there a possibility to have complications?

10:59<@mcintosh>which changes, I can't be sure since I don't know anything about your other server

11:05<mikxm55>Do you think that realistically, I would be able to boot that disk image into another environment such as vmware virtualization?
11:08<@mcintosh>mikxm55: i think it's possible - i'd recommend trying it (if it fails, it may give you hints in changes you need to make to get things up and running, in the form of error messages)
11:10<mikxm55>mxintosh: Do you have any idea on how would I be able to even boot the image file?
11:12<@mcintosh>mikxm55: something like this maybe https://www.vmware.com/support/ws45/doc/disks_add_ws.html
11:12<@mcintosh>i don't use VMWare much but i imagine the main things you would need to do are 1. make sure your image file is compatible with vmware 2. add the disk to your vmware machine 3. try to boot

19:25<jftm>Hey, I'm working on a project for a big potential client (it's a bidding process). I think Linode is the best way to go, but need to confirm some requirements, can somebody help me out?
19:26<@caker>hello - sure, fire away
19:27<jftm>40Gbps internal network, 2Gbps external network (internet)
19:27<jftm>100% uptime
19:28<jftm>Network configurations between nodes, live (no reboot)
19:28<kyhwana>No where will give you 100% uptime
19:29<@caker>all Linodes are on 40Gbps connectivity inbound. Outbound is goverened by the plan you choose - but the minimum plan is 1Gbps and they go up from there. You can see the plan specs here https://www.linode.com/pricing
19:29<@caker>Inbound traffic is free.
19:30<@caker>Outbound traffic counts against your transfer pool - which is pooled together across all of your Linodes in any/all datacenters
19:30<@caker>There is inter-Linode communications using IPv6 or 192.168.x.x v4 ranges which does NOT count against your transfer pool
19:31<dwfreed>in the same datacenter, anyway
19:31<@caker>correct.
19:32<jftm>perfect, which would be the up-time 99.999%?? 99.99%?
19:32<@caker>as much as we'd like to, we can't prevent hardware failures, solar flares, application problems on your end, etc... but our SLA is that we'll credit you for service downtime that's not scheduled maintenance a prorated amount for the downtime beyond 0.1% in a given month
19:32<@caker>99.9%
19:35<jftm>Ok, I think that could work. Just one more question, My company would pay Linode and then set-up all the linodes for the client, which then needs access to change some configs, reboot, admin the network, etc. How can I give access to the final client, without giving them my password, or the ability to see other linodes or mu billing?
19:36<dwfreed>1) put them on their own account; 2) give them restricted users that only have access to the linodes (and then they won't see any billing information)
19:36<@caker>You can add users to the Linode account .. you can give them all access, just billing, or billing plus individual Linodes, etc
19:38<jftm>Great, perfect!! I think I'm going to quote all this based on Linode.
