00:52<FastLiza1d4>Hi! Does anyone know off-hand if the Atlanta datacenter still filters IRC ports? I remember it used to a long time ago, but I'm not sure if they still do
00:52<FastLiza1d4>also, ew what happened to my nick
00:52-!-FastLiza1d4 is now known as FastLizard4
00:52<Ikaros>Used to. Not any longer I do believe.
00:53-!-mode/#linode [+l 361] by ChanServ
00:53<Ikaros>Or at least not subject to it anymore
00:53<FastLizard4>Alright, thanks :)
00:54<Ikaros>One of the main reasons I stayed away from it was because I believed they did overzealous, unnecessary filtering that Linode really had no control over.
00:55<FastLizard4>Yeah
00:55<arlen>freenode has a server in Atlanta
00:55<arlen>shouldn't have any issues with yours
00:55<FastLizard4>Oh, well then, that's a pretty definitive answer then :P

01:03<millisa>greetings
01:07<stefen>the 48Gbps transfer, is it for outgoing bandwidth only?
01:07<millisa>where are you seeing '48Gbps transfer'?
01:08*dcraig tickles millisa around a bit with a large green swordtail
01:08<millisa>You can get 40 Gbps in to a linode, potentially, with the outbound from the linode cap being listed per plan

01:16<stefen>so incoming transfer is unlimited
01:16<stefen>?
01:16<millisa>Inbound traffic doesn't count against your transfer quota
01:18<Zimsky>except if it's from mars
01:20<stefen>great!
01:23<Zimsky>then you have to pay the martian packet tax
01:24<millisa>well, that's only on some parts of the tcp packets, though. you know, the 'ack ack', 'ack ack ack' parts.
01:25<Zimsky>millisa: it's funny because martian packets are a real thing

02:56<keane>hi does linode provide only one ip address
02:56<Peng>!ips
02:56<linbot>Each Linode comes with 1 public IPv4 address and 1 public IPv6 address. Additional IPv4 addresses are $ 1 per month, and require technical justification. A /64 or /56 of IPv6 can be routed to your Linode at no charge.
02:56<keane>thanks for the quick response guys!~
02:57<FluffyFoxeh>e
02:57<keane>how much is the charge if we want to get additional ips?
02:57<FluffyFoxeh>it says right there
02:57<MrPPS>$1 per month for ipv4
02:57<Peng>IPv4, $1 per month. IPv6, free.
02:57<MrPPS>As per above :)
02:57-!-mode/#linode [+l 361] by ChanServ
02:58<keane>doh!
02:59<keane>im confuse regarding this since im a newbie sorry :(
02:59<MrPPS>That's fine - basically, because ipv4 is scarce in general
02:59<MrPPS>It requires a reasonable justification to be able to get more
03:00<MrPPS>Because it's not necessary for a lot of things that it used to be used for (such as SNI for SSL etc)
03:00<keane>so every time an image is deployed it is auto assigned its own unique ip i guess is how it works?
03:00<MrPPS>That's right; when you deploy an image, that machine is set up with the IP address that has been associated to that "instance"
03:00<MrPPS>the IP address for an instance stays the same, even if you deploy a new image to that instance
03:00<MrPPS>If you deleted that instance, and created a new one, chances are you'd end up with a different IP address
03:01<keane>ahh ok! so its the instance that houses the ip address now the image.
03:02<keane>*not
03:02<MrPPS>That's right, yep
03:02<keane>ok thanks :) do i have a limit on instances?
03:02<keane>base on the package?
03:02<arlen>no
03:02<MrPPS>You can deploy as many instances as you like
03:03<MrPPS>Of course, if a region has no more "slots" of that size available, then you'd be unable to
03:03<MrPPS>But this is rare
03:03<keane>ok meaning infinite instace == infinite images. but only 1 ip can be assigned to 1 instance. and that 1 ip instance can have multiple images but with the same ip address?
03:04<keane>i was thinking that i can get multiple ips for just 1 instance
03:04<keane>planning to migrate i think around 6 primary cpanel domains
03:05<MrPPS>Um, think of it like this
03:05<MrPPS>Each "instance" is like a virtual computer that you rent (it is)
03:05<MrPPS>so you can rent as many virtual servers as you want to rent
03:05<MrPPS>And you can reformat them as often as you want
03:05<MrPPS>But each one of those gets 1 IPv4 address
03:06<keane>ok so only 1
03:06<MrPPS>If you want to have cpanel available for 6 different domains, you don't need extra IP addresses - you just need SNI/etc to assign the appropriate SSL cert based on which domain name it is being accessed by
03:09<keane>not really cpanel morel like plannig to connect linode with serverpilot
03:09<arlen>still only need 1
03:09<MrPPS>I gotta head off, but yeah, generally most people only ever have the one ipv4 - if you can justify a technical reason you need more, then you can get them
03:09<MrPPS>I don't know about server pilot specifically, but arlen seems to have you covered :)
03:12<keane>ok thanks mrpps
03:12<keane>hmmm im still kinda confuse sorry arlen
03:16<arlen>about what?
03:17<keane>regarding getting additional ips thing
03:17<linbot>New news from forum: General Discussion • Im glad I finally registered <https://forum.linode.com/viewtopic.php?t=14868&p=73676#p73676>
03:17<keane>you do get charge 1 dollar per extra ipv4
03:17<arlen>you only need one ip. more than one domain can use the same ip
03:18<keane>yeah i know but what if theirs a case where my boss ask me to assign a unique ip to one of the domains we are transferring over
03:18<keane>what do i do?
03:18<keane>:)
03:18<arlen>tell him no
03:19<arlen>it's wasteful
03:20<arlen>you could ask Linode for another ip but doubt they would give you one for that reason
03:21<keane>ok thanks
03:22<keane>thanks arlen for clearing that up

03:25<Peng>arlen: Some people don't know what a pastebin is :X
03:25<arlen>then they should ask :)
03:25<dcraig>A pastebin (or text storage site[1][2][3]) is a type of web application where users can store plain text. They are most commonly used to share short source code snippets for code review via Internet Relay Chat. The first pastebin was located at pastebin.com.
03:25<dcraig>Other sites with the same functionality have appeared, and several open source pastebin scripts are available. Many pastebins allow commenting where readers can post feedback directly on the page. GitHub Gists are a type of pastebin with version control.
03:26<dcraig>Pastebins were developed in the late 1990s to facilitate Internet Relay Chat "chatrooms" devoted to computing,[citation needed] where users naturally needed to share large blocks of computer input or output in a line-oriented medium.
03:26<Peng>Only three references? I don't believe you.
03:26<dcraig>On such IRC "channels", where the formatting clues are subtle and several conversations can be closely interleaved, blocks of computer data nearly always "flood" the queue disrupting the intricate flow.
03:26<dcraig>Users are often warned to use a "pastebin" or risk being "kicked" for "flooding". By using a web link to a pastebin posting, an IRC user can avoid being "banned" for flooding a large block of computer data onto the IRC channel. Instead a reference to it is a one-liner, and the usual protocol of an IRC conversation.
03:26<arlen>flood
03:26<dcraig>:D
03:27<arlen>:)

13:56<nbrewer>pranay: with..node-sass and a web server, i'd imagine? the question is kind of broad.
13:57<nbrewer>you might want to google around for some documentation on that...if it works on Linux it will work on a Linode.
13:58<pranay>sass meaning software as a service
13:58<pranay>not a css sass
13:59<Zimsky>then it'd be saas
13:59<Zimsky>not sass
13:59<nbrewer>yeah that's saas..and that makes your question even more broad
14:00<Zimsky>this is most irritating because I had a complex joke lined up about finding someone sassy
14:00<Zimsky>but the concept of -aaS is funny on its own if you have enough imagination
14:00<Zimsky>ZaaS - Zimsky as a Service
14:00<Zimsky>NaaS, nbrewer as a service
14:01<arlen>AaaS
14:01<Zimsky>yes, I was just about to say that one

18:11<sssss>which is more secure
18:11<sssss>DO or Linode?
18:11<@caker>that stuff is up to you - Linode doesn't log into your machines, etc
18:11<nate>Considering you are managing your own virtual server instance, that would largely fall on you
18:12<sssss>ok @caker and @nate

18:14<nate>Well linode has both managed and professional opt-in services (Which obviously cost extra), you may want to look into those if you're not familiar with maintaining a *nix system. Or consult the documentation on linode's site to teach yourself :P
