16:25<StudentSA>Hello, I took out a linode server a long time ago when 8 cpus where the standard. I have not upgraded to KVM from XEN. will I loose these CPUs if I choose to upgrade my $20 package?
16:29<nbrewer>StudentSA: yeah, the $20 package doesn't come with 8 vCPUs any more.
16:30<StudentSA>So I should just not upgrade then?
16:30<StudentSA>My application is does a fair bit of transcoding work and CPU is important to me
16:31<nbrewer>you're probably still going to see a performance improvement getting extra ram and moving to an ssd..plus the CPUs in newer host machines are likely much more powerful, even if you have access to fewer cores
16:32<nbrewer>i couldn't really say with certainty whether it's going to be better or worse for you...but it's pretty unlikely Linode is going to keep those ancient plans around for ever
16:32<nate>Aren't the old $20 CPU plans like... pretty old CPU's?
16:33<nate>I thought when the new xeon's came
16:33<nate>*out someone benched them far better
16:33<StudentSA>@nbrewer, I think that may have been true previously, but the old $20 were upgraded to Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v2 @ 2.80GHz
16:34<nate>they upgraded the hardware on those plans and kept the same core allowance? That seems weirdddd
16:34<StudentSA>So right now I have a pretty sweet deal... with no ram and limited storage. but as I mentioned about I need CPU
16:35<nbrewer>StudentSA: like i said, they won't support xen forever, and i seriously doubt you're going to be able to keep that plan and move to kvm
16:36<Eugene>"I heard that everybody should upgrade to the newest thing. Should I also upgrade to the newest thing?"
16:36<Eugene>What sort of answer are you expecting to hear, honestly?

20:11<eht>Ok. So I just need to set the nodes to talk over 443 vs 80? Do I need another cert for that link though? @millisa
20:12<millisa>eht: dwfreed is who you'd want to listen to on this one.
20:12<dwfreed>eht: you missed this by 30 seconds: if the nodebalancer is terminating TLS, it will use plaintext for backend communication
20:12<dwfreed>that is not configurable at present
20:13<eht>I see. Ok Thanks
20:14<@jleal>Its worth noting that you can use TCP mode to avoid terminating SSL at the NodeBalancer, but you lose the X-Forwarded-For header - https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/nodebalancer/nodebalancer-reference-guide#protocol
20:16<eht>Interesting

20:24<trippeh>"TCP mode" with PROXY protocol support would be nice. HAProxy and nginx supports it.
20:24<trippeh>then you can terminate ssl on your node and still get the source ip information.
20:25<dwfreed>That makes the assumption that the NodeBalancer is implemented using HAProxy; I cannot say whether that's the case or not
20:25<trippeh>anyone can support that protocol
20:26<dwfreed>if it matters that much to somebody, they probably have the know-how to deploy their own balancer
20:27<eht>I used to have a vps that balanced with nginx before linode had nodebalancers available. It was just too easy to have linode manage it.
20:29<eht>Easy to manage self-signed between the balancer and the nodes
