00:36<Knight21>does changing the root pass prevent other users being able to connect the linode?
00:36-!-raijin [~raijin@cpe-24-198-83-57.maine.res.rr.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:37<dwfreed>depends on how they're connecting
00:37<dcraig>the root mysql password is different from the root linode password
00:38<Knight21>yes, i figured that. I changed the root linode password and noticed that changes the sftp too. Not sure if there is another way for one to access the linode
00:38<Knight21>or rather if there is anything else that can be changed - apart from the mysql root which I am working on
00:39<dcraig>someone could use ssh keys to connect without a password
00:39<dcraig>or they could use another account (not root)
00:40<Knight21>And I am guessing accounts would not be listed on the Linode control panel
00:40<dcraig>correct
00:40<dcraig>you can add new users in linux
00:40<dcraig>and grant them root access
00:41<Knight21>but then surely, root must be able to see all created users
00:41<dcraig>yup
00:41<Knight21>or am I thinking in a too linear fashion
00:41<Knight21>oh, great!
00:42<Zimsky>it's not the best idea to sftp with root
00:42<dcraig>it's convenient
00:42<Knight21>yes, I thought about that too - someone else had set it up
00:45<FluffyFoxeh>Zimsky: whyn't?
00:45*dcraig tickles fluffyfoxeh around a bit with a large giant wels
00:45<Zimsky>OH NOT THE WELS
00:45*FluffyFoxeh slaps dcraig around a bit with a large fox tail
00:46<dcraig>the fish are picked at random, but yeah... that sucks
00:46<Zimsky>s/fox tail/fursuit/
00:46*arlen slaps #linode around a bit with a large freshwater hatchetfish
00:47<dcraig>is that a large tail on a fox? or the tail of a large fox?
00:47<Zimsky>dcraig: depends
00:47<FluffyFoxeh>perhaps both
00:47<Zimsky>dcraig: are your earlobes connected or separated?
00:47<Zimsky>can you roll your tongue?
00:47<FluffyFoxeh>I can!

00:49<dcraig>and I think I can roll my tongue
00:49<dcraig>at least based on these google images
00:49<Zimsky>I see arlen is being intentionally obtuse for comical effect
00:49<dcraig>some people can't do that?
00:49<Zimsky>dcraig: indeed
00:49<dcraig>arlen: hahaha
00:49<dcraig>thanks for the comic relief
00:49<arlen>you're welcome

00:50<dcraig>The proportion of people who can roll their tongue ranges from 65 to 81 percent, with a slightly higher proportion of tongue-rollers in females than in males
00:50<dcraig>how can the proportion "range"?
00:50<FluffyFoxeh>fun fact: snakes use their forked tongues to smell and it allows them to tell which direction a smell is coming from
00:50-!-mode/#linode [+l 368] by ChanServ
00:50<dcraig>this makes no sense
00:50<Zimsky>dcraig: differing studies
00:50<FluffyFoxeh>dcraig: differ - yeah
00:51<dcraig>but the true value must be a single number
00:51<Zimsky>unless you surveyed every person in the world currently alive, you could only make an estimation based on a sampling
00:51<FluffyFoxeh>unfortunately absolute truth is difficult to come by in this universe
00:51<Zimsky>you must also remember that people die and people are born which changes the proportion
00:51<dcraig>anyway, it sounds like most people can do it
00:51<Zimsky>FluffyFoxeh: it depends on the localisation and the nature of the system
00:53-!-Knight21 [~oftc-webi@95.146.202.190] has joined #linode
00:53-!-Knight21 is "OFTC WebIRC Client" on #linode
00:53<Zimsky>dcraig: the sampling itself is subject to unintended effects such as the hereditary traits of a region
00:53<Knight21>hey guys - how can one view if there any users that might have ssh keys stored to access their linode?
00:53-!-mode/#linode [+l 369] by ChanServ
00:54<Zimsky>dcraig: people in Mozambique might be significantly more likely to be able to roll their tongues than people in Sweden
00:54<dcraig>come on
00:54<FluffyFoxeh>Knight21: perhaps find /home -name authorized_keys
00:54<dcraig>the swedes are known for tongue rolling
00:54<Zimsky>Knight21: `cat /home/<user>/.ssh/authorized_keys`
00:55<Zimsky>assuming openssh is left with the default location of pubkeys
00:55<dcraig>if you think you have rogue users on your linode, maybe just create a fresh linode and copy you website or whatever over to it...
00:55<FluffyFoxeh>yup
00:55<Knight21>this may sound quite novice but what if one deletes the user folder directly via SFTP - would that delete that key or is that just hoping too much?
00:55<Zimsky>dcraig: jokes aside, genetics is fascinating at scale
00:56<Zimsky>Knight21: that might cause problems, but sure
00:56<dcraig>I would guess that someone could still log in if their home directory goes away

00:56-!-eyepulp is "eyepulp" on #linode
00:56<Zimsky>it depends on your ssh configuration
00:56<Zimsky>if password authentication is still on, then someone is still able to log in
00:56<dcraig>but at this point, you might as well delete everything, as that would prevent people from doing anything, too...
00:56<Zimsky>and deleting the authorised keys file won't disconnect currently-connected users
00:56<FluffyFoxeh>Knight21: the keys are stored in .ssh/authorized_keys in the user's home dir (assuming default configuration)
00:57<dcraig>if you burn the house down, people won't be able to break in

00:58<FluffyFoxeh>go in where?
00:58<Zimsky>but 'in' is now an unresolved reference
00:58<FluffyFoxeh>oh

02:47<millisa>it's a vps. you get an empty system that you (usually) install linux and whatever software you want on.
02:50<Neelu>Will I get SSL feature?
02:51<millisa>if you install ssl based services and get a certifcate.
02:51<Neelu>SO, do I need to buy SSL and website protection explicitly?
02:51<millisa>If you want to buy certificates, sure. You could also use something like LetsEncrypt and get them for free

11:22<lcdservices>anyone have experience resizing up/down a linode? I want to upsize my linode to access more memory/cpu to run a large import script and gauge the performance improvement. if I don't see substantive improvement, I will then downsize it back to the current levels. is that fairly straightforward? I'm more concerned about the downsizing after testing
