01:03<montigny34>Does anybody know how to setup name servers on my linode so that domains can setup their DNS instead of using A records to point to my server?
01:06<Zimsky>google knows

01:07<montigny34>is bind DNS what I'm looking for?
01:08<Zimsky>it's one software package you can use, yes
01:08-!-mode/#linode [+l 359] by ChanServ
01:10<montigny34>Zimsky: In your opinion should I only allow clients to host html, css and php files?
01:10<montigny34>As far as coding goes
01:10<Zimsky>it depends entirely on how the system is set up
01:10<montigny34>For example bash scripts should not be allowed?
01:10<montigny34>actually to run cron jobs they would need bash if I'm not mistaken
01:10<Zimsky>if your web server runs php, then allowing clients to host php is probably not a good idea if you don't have proper security
01:11<Zimsky>I still don't know what you are trying to achieve
01:11<montigny34>I'm creating a hosting server
01:11<montigny34>we went over this last night :P
01:12<Zimsky>I know
01:12<montigny34>What did you mean by that statement then?
01:12<montigny34>What questions did I not answer?
01:12<Zimsky>I know we went over this last night, I didn't know it was a hosting thing
01:12<montigny34>ohhh I thought I mentioned it, my bad
01:13<Zimsky>webhosts suck
01:14<montigny34>Hey! I'm creating btw in case you want to know more :)
01:14<montigny34>check out the site
01:14<Zimsky>does it use HTTPS?
01:14<montigny34>the domain does
01:14<montigny34>the server will as well

01:46<nate>montigny34: I think the point being attempted to make is that a system can be potentially easily defeated by unchecked PHP, which is why most 'shared hosts' doing PHP hosting enact a ton of security measures
01:57*dcraig tickles zimsky around a bit with a large bighead carp
01:57*dcraig tickles nate around a bit with a large pearleye
01:57<Zimsky>nate killed harambe
01:58<dcraig>what is this dallas 2 nonsense
01:59<nate>the sequel of the tokyo 2 stuff?
02:01<Zimsky>why is there no moscow location
02:01<Peng>somewhat different; Dallas 1 and 2 have an integrated network.
02:05<dcraig>I remember for Fremont 1 to Fremont 2, they loaded up all the servers in caker's hyundai and drove them down the street
02:06<dcraig>sounds like they have servers in both places simultaneously
02:06<dcraig>or maybe driving them around as people migrate?
02:07<arlen>your migration is delayed. traffic
02:08<dcraig>dallas485 is making a u-turn when possible
02:11<Peng>dcraig: Yeah, they have servers in Dallas 1 and Dallas 2 simultaneously. They're encouraging/forcing people to do migrations via the standard migration interface.
02:12<Peng>If you resize for a free RAM upgrade or something you (may|will) wind up in Dallas 2.
02:14<dcraig>I have to move by the 25th
02:15<arlen>seems you can tell if you're in D2 by the host name. it'll be something like h1232-rin1
02:16<zifnab>Reading in Nakedness
02:16<zifnab>erm, wow, is there a linode person whos name starts with "R"
02:17<Peng>RIN's the LOCODE for Richardson, TX, a suburb of Dallas.
02:17<Peng>Either Linode likes LOCODEs or it's a huge coincidence.
02:18<zifnab>why LOCODE instead of airports
02:18<zifnab>dallas should be DFW
02:18<Peng>Maybe they like that Linode and LOCODE rhyme. :D
02:18<zifnab>or DAL
02:18<zifnab>fair point
02:18<zifnab>i was trying to come up with an bacronym that ended with 'nymphomaniac'
02:18<zifnab>and failed miserably
02:19<dcraig>is dallas 2 in richardson?
02:19<Peng>I have no idea. Maybe.
02:19<zifnab>just run a geoip from your server
02:19<zifnab>(obvious /s)
02:20<zifnab>some day intel chips will come with built in GPS, today is not that day.
02:20<Peng>They moved me to Absecon, NJ!?!?
02:24<Peng>They refer to Tokyo 2 as Shinagawa or SHG (it's a Tokyo ward), which matches that LOCODE (SHG airport is in Alaska)
02:26<zifnab>fremont is something
02:26<zifnab>i've seen the funnycodes
02:27<zifnab>somewhere, i can't actually find it now
02:27<zifnab>i'm also not entirely sure which box it was on
02:28<zifnab>for fremont
02:28<Peng>fnc is the LOCODE for Fremont
02:29<zifnab>although the host shows as 'fremontXXX' still
02:29<Peng>Apparently FMT is the code for Fremont, Indiana. Hurricane Electric is misleading!
02:29<Peng>Or else their data centers are in Indiana and they've fooled everyone for years
02:29<zifnab>also i'm absolutely shocked at how well nginx does static files

04:13-!-mode/#linode [+l 359] by ChanServ
04:13<fiberno>i saw your ads from 5$ for month. that is right
04:14<Zimsky>it is?
04:16<hawk>Afaik it's the 1GB plan that is $5
04:16<hawk>But, yes, there is a plan that is $5, if that was the question.
04:17<fiberno>i bought 2048 plan
04:17<fiberno>this cost will be 10$
04:18<fiberno>but i lose my money 107$
04:20<hawk>If you have questions specifically about your own billing situation, I would suggest that you contact Linode directly (ticket).
04:20<fiberno>yesterday i get email alert from linode, my server is shutdown
04:20<fiberno>so i check my billing
04:21<fiberno>i see cost is 107$ for per month
04:21<nate>fiberno: What is your bandwidth usage? perhaps you went way way over your bandwidth allotment?
04:22<nate>Otherwise do what hawk said, contact linode directly
04:22<fiberno>i use 2048 plan
04:23<hawk> may be worthwhile reading as well
04:26<fiberno>yeah i already read,
04:28<fiberno>but why about 2GB plan per month for $105.31
04:28<Meyer_>fiberno: how much data have you used?
04:28<hawk>If it's not clear from the billing statement, then I suggest you ask Linode
04:29<Meyer_>fiberno: Linode 2048 includes 2TB of transfer
04:29<fiberno>yes correct
04:29<fiberno>i used 2048
04:30<Meyer_>fiberno: yes, but how much data transfer have you used?
04:30<Meyer_>if you login to the control panel and look at the details of your VPS you will see a section saying "Network"
04:30<fiberno>it may be aleast 1GB
04:30<Zimsky>fiberno: submit a ticket to linode
04:30<Meyer_>in there you can see Incoming: Outgoing: and Total:
04:30<Zimsky>fiberno: or call them. or email them
04:31<Meyer_>or, check your billing statement. It will tell you what have been charged
04:31*nate suddenly wonders if they got managed enabled
04:32<Meyer_>that might be possible yes
04:32<fiberno>i can't call you
04:32<fiberno>but i will send with email
04:33<nate>fiberno: Or you can just use the ticket system in the linode manager
04:33<fiberno>not yet
04:33<fiberno>if you need i did it
04:33<nate>fiberno: That's all emailing them is going to do, with exception that it might take longer since it's external
04:34<nate>fiberno: We don't need anything. This is a community channel, most of us in here are nothing more than other linode customers, we cannot help you. You need to contact linode about billing issues
04:47<Zimsky>we also sell bagels
04:47<Zimsky>only ₸400
04:48<fiberno>ok i will send complain form to linode
04:53<Zimsky>nate: can I submit a complaint to you?
04:55<nate>only if I get paid for it
04:57<fiberno>someone give me linode complain department
04:58<nate>fiberno: Again, submit a ticket
04:58<nate>You have an account, log in to the linode manager and file a support request
05:00<fiberno>i have been create a ticket
05:03<nate>THen wait for a reply
05:03<nate>Sending an email isn't going to get a response any faster, if anything it may delay stuff because you're going to be getting multiple people involved that don't need to be
05:09<fiberno>what was is Linode Managed cost
05:12<fiberno>this only addition field right?
05:12<nate>fiberno: if you requested managed on your linode, that's $100 on top of the regular cost of a linode. So $110 for a managed 2048 linode (pro-rated if you joined earlier in the month)

08:56<hawk>GlennS: I'm *guessing* it's what the Linux kernel calls it when it gets to deal with the root fs entirely on its own. I'm guessing it may look slightly differently if you were to use the distro's own kernel which probably has an initrd step that actually mounts the root. To me it doesn't seem interesting enough to really dig into
08:57<GlennS>Does that mean Linode is distributing its own kernel then?
08:57<GlennS>(It turns out I can fix the problem I was having by just adding a symlink `ln -s /dev/sda /dev/root`, so I'm just curious at this point)
08:58<@jhaas>GlennS: yep -
08:58<Zimsky>that's illegal
08:58<@jhaas>you can run the one that comes with your distro if you want -
08:59<hawk>GlennS: The default Linode setup is their standard kernel (outside of the vm) + fairly minimalalistic install of whichever distro you pick

09:42<labonneco>Ok thank your for your quick answer.
09:42<labonneco>I have to delete it before the end of the month.
09:42<nbrewer>Linode charges for usage by the hour, up to a monthly cap. So for example their 2GB plan is never going to be more than $10, but if you use it for less than a month it would be less.
09:43<labonneco>very cool
09:43<labonneco>Since how long is Linode working?
09:43<nbrewer>I should say, more than $10/month without addons like backups, etc
09:43<Woet>mentioned at the bottom.

09:45<labonneco>Just to be sure : when I delete my Linode instance there will be no more charges?
09:45<labonneco>Meant for this instance.
09:46<nbrewer>they use what's called metered billing, or maybe they renamed it to hourly billing, but anyway it means that you get charged after you're done using it
09:46<nbrewer>or on the first of the next month
09:50<Woet>labonneco: you get charged for every hour your linode exists.
09:51<Woet>labonneco: you do not get charged if your linode does not exist.
09:51<Woet>[15:43:15] <Woet>
09:51<Woet>[15:43:17] <Woet> mentioned at the bottom.
09:52<labonneco>Thank you. What about the fixed IP?
09:52<labonneco>Did we have a fixed IPv4?
09:52<ponas>whene you delete a linode the ipv4 goes back into the pool
09:52<hawk>1 IPv4 address, yes
09:53<ponas>as long as the linode exists the ipv4 is fixed

21:29<Zimsky>if you must have a credit card payment/record of the details before you can use paypal to pay

21:56<dwfreed>my guess is that he doesn't have a valid credit card
21:56<warewolf>I wonder how much more fraud that opened linode to when they started accepting paypal
21:57<dwfreed>because of paypal's very strong bias toward buyers, Linode has historically refused to even offer the ability to pay via paypal, to avoid the inevitable abuse that will happen
21:57<dwfreed>the requirement to have a valid credit card on file in order to use paypal mitigates some of that
21:57<erik_>arlen : how can I see if linode initiated the reboot?
21:58<dwfreed>it'll be in the job log for the linode
21:58<warewolf>erik_: last I saw you'd see something like 'Host initiated boot'
21:58<warewolf>in the "job queue"
21:58<arlen>and there will probably be an open ticket about it
21:59<erik_>no ticket
21:59<erik_>all I see is : "Lassie initiated boot"
21:59<warewolf>maybe your VPS crashed then
21:59<warewolf>lassie tries to rescue timmy (your VM) when it gets in trouble.
21:59<dwfreed>that means your Linode died due to something internally, like a kernel panic (or somebody logged in and ran "reboot")
22:00<Ikaros>Mmm, come to think of it, I've had the same issue with mine.
22:00<Ikaros>That only seemed to actually go away once it moved host nodes
22:00<Peng>If the host falls over you can have "Host initiated" and "Lassie initiated" simultaneously
22:00<linbot>LISH allows you to perform certain actions without having to log in to the Linode Manager. LISH's primary function is to allow you to access your Linode's console, even if networking is disabled.
22:00<millisa>you could get on lish and run 'yourlinodesname logview'
22:01<Ikaros>^ not useful in some cases
22:01<millisa>^ once had a dream about bacon
22:01<dwfreed>if it's not useful, then you have a misconfiguration
22:01<Ikaros>Mmmm, bacon...
22:01<dwfreed>note that you need to scroll up after running logview, because the last 100 lines are the current boot
22:02<millisa>should show the last 250 lines from the previous boot before the 100 lines of the current boot
22:02<dwfreed>honestly should just get rid of the 100 lines of the current boot
22:03<dwfreed>that's what screen's for
22:03<Ikaros>dwfreed honestly I pointed the finger at the kernel I was using which was stock Linode kernel, particularly at it insisting on restarting on panic after x seconds which I overrode via sysctl to not attempt it. If it's panicing I want to see that dump. Thankfully, since mine was migrated to an (apparently) older host node to do block storage with, I have not needed to look at it.
22:04<Ikaros>*knock on wood*
22:04<dwfreed>you can always look at the dump using logview
22:04<Ikaros>If it appears in the logs, sure.
22:05<dwfreed>it's printed to the console, which always happens
22:05<Ikaros>I'm not sure what else would simply cause the thing to cut off aside from a panic
22:05<erik_>strange - cant find anything strange in the logs
22:05<Ikaros>I mean heck I'm not going in there and typing 'shutdown' or 'reboot'.
22:05<dwfreed>you're looking at logview, the lish command?
22:06<dwfreed>erik_: ^
22:06<erik_>no was just looking through the /log/syslog etc
22:06<dwfreed>those are almost never useful in a panic situation
22:06<Ikaros>He means to log into LiSH and issue the logview command for it
22:07<dwfreed>Ikaros: you could always try netconsole :)
22:07<Ikaros>dwfreed: Well like I mentioned before, the move to another host node seems to have inadvertently gotten rid of whatever the heck the problem was (though the intention was to enable block storage)
22:08<Peng>Ikaros: I don't suppose you changed kernel versions when moving?
22:08<Ikaros>Nah Peng. It was the same after migration.

22:19<Zimsky>why don't you use an operating system that isn't terrible
22:20<Ikaros>Like Linux? :P
22:22<Ikaros>I have many valid reasons not to, despite Windows' crappiness overall. Make 100% of my games work on Linux natively and I'll consider it.

22:25<MrPPS>I manage to get away with using linux for my day-to-day driving, and then steam-stream games from my windows machine when I need gaming
22:25<MrPPS>happy medium for now
22:26<erik_>not getting anywhere in my clues abuot why it restarted - very strange because the server isn't running a lot
22:26<erik_>and running latest ubuntu 16 etc
22:27<erik_>i know for a fact noone else rebooted it unless it was ddosed because im the only one who can
22:28<Ikaros>Oh you'd have other issues if it was ddosed.
22:30<erik_>but yes it looks like a crash of some sort becaus the syslog had a long line of junky characters before the new boot up log lines
22:30<arlen>what did logview show?
22:30<erik_>i feel silly but i couldn't get the lish logview to show
22:31<erik_>i logged in via lish but didn't see how to exec the logview command
22:31<erik_>used the web interface
22:31<arlen>use ssh lish
22:32<erik_>do I have to use ssh
22:32<erik_>cant use the web interface
22:32<arlen>you can use whichever you want
22:32<arlen>if the web isn't working, try ssh
22:32<erik_>so if I use the web ui what do i run once logged in
22:32<erik_>to run logview
22:33<arlen>linodename logview
22:34<erik_>got it now
22:34<erik_>checking log
22:35<arlen>this will be helpful [22:01:50] dwfreed: note that you need to scroll up after running logview, because the last 100 lines are the current boot
