08:56<Lee>the link about linode hosting the domain and website.....I think its a bad ide. then you are trapped. I have my domains on the former register.com and my own dns on another provider and dns on linode
08:57<kyhwana>How are you trapped? You just switch your nameservers to a new DNS host?
08:57<grawity>I guess the problem is moving all the DNS records
08:58<kyhwana>how so?
08:58<kyhwana>You have a backup of your zone file right?
08:58<Lee>at least why give them a monopoly
09:00<Lee>I'm a user of linode for one week. so far I like it. they're DIY which is just what i want.
09:00<Lee>I was working on someone's godaddy account. he has domain, dns, webhosting, email, everything in one nest.
09:01<Lee>I have to say, its a total mess. anyone worked on a godaddy hosting account?
09:01<Lee>its a horrible mess. everything is a collection of web GUIs.
09:01<grawity>yes, but what hosted service *isn't* managed through web GUIs?
09:02<grawity>never seen a DNS registrar where you can just ssh in and update NS records via command line
09:02<Lee>it looks like they went around downloading scripts. they have several different ways to file transfer, which sounds good, but its not. the one hand doesn not know what the other two hands are doing.
09:03<Lee>ok, not totally coherent this morning.
09:04<Lee>basically godaddy is run by a company that obviouslly fires people every three months.
09:12<rsdehart>what does this have to do with linode, though?
09:13<rsdehart>I still don't understand how you're trapped

10:22<dzho>Lee: Linode doesn't offer registrar service, so far as I know. So, you don't have all eggs in one basket. They *do* offer name service, though. These are different things, but if one is used to having one company do it all, I could see how confusion might arise.
10:23<dzho>Further, Linode offer APIs for (pretty much, or entirely, I don't know?) all of their services, so you don't have to use a Web GUI.
10:23<Peng>You can also use zone transfers for DNS, if you choose to set it up that way
10:23*dzho checks
10:23<dzho>yup, Godaddy have an API also.

11:46<dzho>COLD: Linode offers you a Linux server. You put on it whatever you want and (as is often a limiting condition) whatever you are able to install and (this is where it gets tricky) manage.
11:47<dzho>that means you install and configure the web server software, PHP, MySQL, and any applications on top of them, including cPanel, for which you must provide your own license.
11:47<dzho>if you can't do those things yourself, you need to hire someone to do them.

22:20<Frank_Liu>4.If i upgrade or degrade the plan,is that ok ?That means i don't need to register another new account ?

22:30<Frank_Liu>If there're three webistes, can i use the CDN service each per website?Any limit?
22:30<Peng>Linode enforces no particular limits on CDNs.
22:31<Peng>You would have to ask your CDN provider.
22:31<Peng>Cliudflare is fine with people running 3 websites.
22:31<Frank_Liu>Ok
22:31<Frank_Liu>If e-commerce website like woocommerce,can i use this plan ?Any notification ?
22:31<Peng>Probably?
22:32<Frank_Liu>Is it included dedicated IP in the plan?
22:32<Peng>Yes
22:32<Frank_Liu>How many?
22:33<Peng>!ips
22:33<linbot>Each Linode comes with 1 public IPv4 address and 1 public IPv6 address. Additional IPv4 addresses are $ 1 per month, and require technical justification. A /64 or /56 of IPv6 can be routed to your Linode at no charge.
22:34<Frank_Liu>Excuse,i mean the dedicated IP,not shared one
22:34<Peng>Yes
22:34<Peng>All IPs are dedicated
22:34<Frank_Liu>Any different with IPV4 and IPV6 ?
22:35<Peng>What do you mean?
22:35<Frank_Liu>Well,i'm not very familier with the IPV4 or IPV6

22:43<Frank_Liu>And last question, any limit with the domain and sub domain? i mean the quantity
22:43<Peng>There are no direct limits of domains and subdomains

22:45<Peng>VPS hosting provides many advantages in many circumstances
22:46<Peng>Since you have full control over your software, and often better performance

22:50<Frank_Liu>Any good way to transfer my website to your VPS?
22:52<Peng>That depends on your old host and your website
22:52<Peng>In general terms, install and configure your software, and upload your files using SFTP or rsync or something.
22:53<Frank_Liu>Inmotionhosting,using a woocommerce website
22:53<Peng>You can hire Linode to help with site migrations, for an additional fee.
22:53<Peng>Sorry, i don't personally have experience with them.
22:53<Frank_Liu>I understand:)
22:54<Frank_Liu>I think i have got your professional service

23:49<MrPPS>Largely irrelevant for me now as most things are in containers for me, but I use mmonit to monitor changes on things that shouldn't change
23:50<Lee>mmonit? is that somethign part of linode.com?
23:53<Lee>monit seems to only look at processes https://www.linode.com/docs/uptime/monitoring/monitoring-servers-with-monit
23:53<Lee>I just want to know which files were added/deleted/changed
23:54<MrPPS>Lee: you can do file change monitoring
23:54<MrPPS>i.e.
23:54<MrPPS>check file certificate_file with path /etc/prosody/certs/fullchain.pem
23:54<MrPPS> if changed checksum then exec "/usr/bin/monit restart prosody"
23:56<MrPPS>monit is versatile in what it *can* do - https://mmonit.com/monit/documentation/monit.html
23:58<Lee>you're selling me monit? ok, so, currently, I just write a 3 line script to check a process such as httpd and send email if process down.
23:59<Lee> ah, i see. it trys to restart your processes
