00:11<dcraig>buy a linode, get free sneakers?
00:11<Peng>Sign up with the new Linode coupon AIRJRDN
00:13<Eugene>Zimsky - joke domains that use a *.mydomain.com A/AAAA record /can/ do LetsEncrypt, but the time-to-first-connection is bad because you have to do the enrollment while keeping the handshake open....
00:13<Eugene>And I value the operational simplicity and responsiveness of joke domains highly
00:15<HoopyCat>hang on, i've got a certificate for that around here somewhere... just a second... *opens and closes file cabinet drawers while eyeing the fax machine*
00:23<Peng>Eugene: https://caddyserver.com/docs/automatic-https
00:24<Eugene>Yes? What about it?
00:28<Eugene>The warnings on that page say that it is not suitable for wildcard situations with lots of subdomains; the feature may be discontinued in the future; it requires instantaneous inssuance(not guaranteed, and LE still takes a non-zero number of seconds anyway).... lots of drawbacks. Just like I said
00:28<Eugene>A wildcard cert is handy for wildcard DNS records; its almost like thats why they were invented.

01:13<Zimsky>kyhwana: yeah
01:18<Cromulent>I've used Arch Linux on the desktop before so kinda got used to systemd
01:21<Ikaros>Eh, I'm used to it as well, I see no need to remove it.
01:22<AlexMax>people talked the same smack about solaris' SMF when it was new

01:24<Zimsky>Cromulent: getting used to something doesn't mean it's okay
01:25<Cromulent>true - what I should have said was I got some experience using systemd on Arch Linux and didn't really mind it at all
01:25<Cromulent>I kinda understand why people hate it but I just can't bring myself to care that much

10:07<ajeesh>so do you have a step to install grub in linode centos6 servers ?
10:08<ajeesh>This is a live server and i don't want to make any problems
10:08<Zimsky>G
10:08<smallclone>well you would have to, at a minimum, reboot it to use grub
10:08<smallclone>https://www.linode.com/docs/tools-reference/custom-kernels-distros/use-the-distribution-supplied-kernel-on-centos-6-with-grub-legacy
10:09<ajeesh>Also without these grub can I reboot my server. Since I have a new security update and i need to reboot my machine for the new changes to takes place
10:09<smallclone>you don't need to grub to reboot, that is handled by the linode manager
10:10<smallclone>tbh, that guide doesnt even really have you install grub - you just make the menu.lst file that the grub legacy boot option in the Linode manager looks for
10:10<smallclone>it might be better to get some idea of why you want grub in the first place. if you've operated without it for this long, why do you need it now?
10:11<ajeesh>Just would like to confirm one thing
10:11<ajeesh>If i am not going to install the new kernel , I can safley rebbot my server without any issue ?
10:11<smallclone>"any issue" depends on if you've configured your services to come back on boot
10:12<smallclone>which no one is going to know except for you
10:12<ajeesh>Yes I have configured my services to start after the reboot
10:12<ajeesh>My concern is this grub
10:12<smallclone>ok well then yeah, most likely, you will be fine

20:15<Sparrow>I see, thanks for the answers. if im allocated 1vcpu I can use 100% of that if I wanted to? as at digital ocean you are not guaranteed cpu resources and therefore other tenants can "steal" your cpu
20:18<@mcintosh>if you use 100% of your vcpu all the time, we'll generally ask you to stop
20:18<@mcintosh>it is the nature of this type of "shared" hosting that cpu contention can occur, yes
20:19<@mcintosh>non-CPU resources are guaranteed, though
20:19<Sparrow>ok, im not planning on using 100% but what % would you deem fair use?
20:20<@mcintosh>there is no strictly delineated percentage value - generally if you start impacting others (frequently) that is when it becomes an issue
20:22*Peng glances at graph, purses lips, looks away
20:22<@mcintosh>i could not provide a specific percentage of constant use that will negatively impact other users... it can vary for any number of reasons (cause of the CPU use, whether its constant or spiking, size of the linode plan etc.)
20:22<Sparrow>ok, would a constant 75% usage be acceptable?
20:23<@mcintosh>on a single core linode? you could probably get away with it but would be tough to say
20:23<@mcintosh>i wouldn't recommend running a server at 75% CPU usage, though
20:23<Sparrow>it would be a spike use
20:24<Sparrow>however it may hit 75% fairly often which is why I said constant
20:24<Sparrow>the rest of the time the cpu will be fairly idle
20:25<@mcintosh>i probably would not consider 75% spikes a particularly big deal

20:33<mrtux>i noticed my linode comes with a /64 ipv6 subnet. am i able to assign more ipv6 addresses to my linode or do i have to request another subnet?
20:34<mrtux>it has me a little confused, as it says "Each Linode starts off with one global IPv6 address and additional IPv6 addresses can be added at no charge."
20:34<Ikaros>You have one to start.
20:34<mrtux>alright
20:34<Ikaros>You can request another IPv6 subnet at no charge
20:34<mrtux>i see that
20:35<Ikaros>Though you will have to configure any additional addresses yourself iirc
20:43<mrtux>makes sense, that's what i wanted to do
20:43<mrtux>thanks for the help, not very well versed with ipv6.
20:45<@mcintosh>fwiw Linodes only come with a /128 to start - /64s require opening a ticket and asking for one

23:21<Vincent_>can anybody tell me if I buy the hosting in linode, then where I can buy the SSL?
23:22<Vincent_>I got my SSL for my site. And now I want to move the site from Bluehost to Linode. Can I still use the formal SSL or I need to buy a new one?
23:24<Peng>Linode is a VPS provider. You could get a certificate from any CA and install it.
23:24<Peng>https://letsencrypt.org/ is free.

23:26<Peng>Linode isn't a certificate reseller.
23:26<Peng>(Linode Managed and cPanel make things more complicated, though.)
