12:42<DolbyNR>I was noticed about a scheduled migration (I guess many people were). Are there any precautions I should take ?
12:44<DolbyNR>I already made a backup of all client-accounts that are hosted on this server
12:44<dwfreed>you might want to schedule some downtime with your clients in advance of the migration to make sure that your system comes back up after a reboot
12:45<dwfreed>you'd be surprised at how many Linodes fail to come back up after a migration because they haven't been rebooted in years, and something broke in their configuration a long time ago that they never noticed
12:47<Peng>I recently broke the Nginx init script, *and* the NTP init script
12:47<Peng>Fun times
12:50<DolbyNR>I see. Thanks dwfreed. I'll schedule the downtime. I guess the backup-service I'm subscribed for will not be any good to have a recovery :)
12:50<Peng>What do you mean?
12:50<dwfreed>It depends on when the breakage occurred
12:50<dwfreed>if all current backups contain the same breakage, yeah, it's not going to be very helpful

13:06<relidy>ryu: It sounds like the issue is insufficient PHP workers, then, not an nginx issue strictly.
13:06<ryu>am i not supposed to be using the php sock?
13:08<ryu>how do i up the php workers?
13:09<relidy>ryu: Have you done any direct configuration of your PHP-FPM pool(s)? Is it actually listening on the socket?
13:10<relidy>You say that it stop working under load, so that means that it does work normally under "normal" loads?
13:10<ponas>ryu: /etc/php/7.0/fpm/pool.d/www.conf is where you set the number of workers

13:11<relidy>That's going to depend on distro, but seems like a decent place to start.
13:11<ponas>it's pretty well commented, but you'll need to consider how much memory will used when the maximum number of workers is reached
13:12<ryu>pm.max_children = 500
13:12<ryu>is that the setting?

16:22<@scrane>Hey Renex, give me just one moment while I take a look at that domain
16:22<Renex>thank you scrane :)
16:23<@scrane>Just to be sure, it's selgora.com, right?
16:23<Renex>yep
16:24<@scrane>Alright, I see the test site. "Hello World Connected successfully". Is your error specifically with setting up RDNS?
16:25<Renex>there are 2 of them. first is with RNDS indeed, and second is that I can't see the website in browser yet, though it resoves to correct ip when i ping it
16:26<@scrane>Okay. For RDNS, I want to see if this will work for you right now. Go to the Linode in Linode Manager then click the "Remote Access" tab. Click the "Reverse DNS" link, then in the hostname just put in "selgora.com"
16:27<Renex>ok, match found now
16:27<@scrane>As far as not being able to see the website in the browser, have you tried accesing it in a different browser, or accessing it through a private/uncached session in the browser?
16:27<Renex>do i choose ipv4 or 6?
16:27<@scrane>Choose both
16:27<Renex>ok
16:28<@scrane>That'll set up RDNS both the IPv6 and the IPv5.
16:28<@scrane>*ipv4

16:30<@scrane>What you're seeing in the original browser will likely be a cached session.
16:30<Renex>in the original browser its redirecting to https all the time, so that might be cached from earlier, when i tried to setup with cloudflare
16:31<@scrane>If you clear out your cache then go to the site, you'll likely be good.
16:31<Renex>thank you a lot!
16:31<Renex>i have 1 more question, if you don't mind :( dunno if it could be done or not. if i were to host the domain with cloudflare (which i tried earlier today), it imported all my dns setting and then i changed the A record for the main domain to the linode ip. Idea is that i wanted to keep ns1,ns2 and webmail pointing to old host. is this posible or is a stupid thing? it gave me 502 bad gateway on cf

16:36<@scrane>So it sounds to me like that would expose your domain's IP address if you are using CloudFlare for DoS mitigation, at least as far as my understanding of what you are trying to do goes. If you are using CloudFlare, yo ushould only use CloudFlare's nameservers instead of using both CloudFlare's and Linode's.

16:41<@scrane>Yeah, that is decently generic. It tends to indicate an improper configuration somewhere within CloudFlare, I think.

16:43<Peng>Usually a 502 is coming from the origin web server
16:44<@scrane>Nope, nvm. I was wrong, ahaha
16:44<Peng>Renex: Without more information, it's hard to say, but what you want to do is probably possible.
16:44<Renex>yep, read that one. but why would it give it? i activated ssl on cloudflare and now on linode dns i see its working only through http, but that can't be it,because cloudflare offers the ssl, right?
16:44<Peng>What's your domain? What's the FQDN? What nameservers is it using?
16:45<Renex>selgora.com - changed to linode dns 1 hour ago, to see if it works this way
16:45<Peng>Using Cloudflare's services usually requires using (only) their DNS servers
16:45<Peng>Oh, right, you answered that. Sorry.
16:45<Peng>Well, the domain's not using Cloudflare right now
16:45<Renex>yep, i had only their ns
16:46<Peng>That stuff is cached for up to 2 days
16:46<Renex>it changed instantly to linode (dunno how and why)
16:46<Renex> :)
16:46<Peng>Your resolver must not have had it cached.
16:46<Peng>Still, others might.
16:47<Renex>yep. so here's what i did: registered to cloudflare, then imported all my dns settings throught their setup process. After that, i only changed the A record for selgora.com (main domain) to point to linode ip
16:48<Renex>everything else, i kept pointing to old host (webmail, ns1, ns2 etc)
16:48<Renex>through*
16:48<Renex>also disabled http, and only kept https

22:17<FluffyFoxeh>WLS-ITGuy: Use a pastebin for more than 4 lines please :). Do you have any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ ?
22:17<FluffyFoxeh>any .list files in there will also be parsed
22:18<WLS-ITGuy>Thanks
22:18<FluffyFoxeh>phlux: I'm still on Jessie. it's a long way from EOL
22:22<FluffyFoxeh>got another box on Wheezy. It's got at least a few months left
22:31<WLS-ITGuy>I have a box that is on Wheezy as well. But is giving me trouble getting it upgrade
22:36<WLS-ITGuy>This thing is so fubar'd
22:50<dwfreed>generally it's best to deploy a fresh Linode with a modern distro, and configure it to replace the old one

23:03<WLS-ITGuy>That is easier said than done
23:04<dwfreed>sounds like a good time to improve that process, then, so that next time it's much easier
23:04<dwfreed>say it with me: configuration management
23:09<WLS-ITGuy>That would be great if this was my project from the beginning. I'll most definitely be doing that moving forward. I inherited 3 Linodes and 3 other linux boxes that were setup by an outside vendor

23:25<nagchampa>MrPPS: sorry i missed your reply, do you run the linux-linode kernel from aur or does the linux kernel work well enough
23:25<nagchampa>i saw a comment saying 32 bit linodes will crash with the linux kernel but i run 64 bit anyway
23:25<MrPPS>nagchampa: had no issues with the provided kernel, or with the lts kernel
23:26<MrPPS>I am 64 bit for all of them though
23:27<nagchampa>did you run the image on the linode, or did you build it elsewhere then upload the image?
23:28<MrPPS>nagchampa: I ran the official linode image. I haven't tried building + uploading unfortunately
23:28<nagchampa>oh, they have an arch image?
23:29<nagchampa>oh, i'm an idiot, that's probably a good choice :P
23:30<nagchampa>i currently have a custom gentoo build that i manually uploaded, i wanted to use btrfs and systemd which required some custom setup which I did locally first, i feel like i've learned what I want to from that experiment though

23:43<MrPPS>nagchampa: haha yeah, makes things quicker having that image already :P
23:43<MrPPS>I can imagine you would've learnt a fair bit from the gentoo build
23:44<MrPPS>nagchampa: and believe it or not, an australian DC would be massively helpful to me too

23:44<Ashish>4 or 8 gb plan
23:45<MrPPS>according to the plans page, both have 40Gbps in, 1Gbps out
23:45<MrPPS>3TB and 4TB transfer respectively
23:46<Ashish>i am surprised is it (40gb) dedicated to per vps

23:55<CppDev>Hello!
23:55<CppDev>Just wanted to ask a few things about the servers
23:55<@sjacobs>go for it.
23:56<CppDev>If I have 2 nodes communicating internally on your network, will i "spend
23:56<CppDev>"my bandwidth?
23:56<CppDev>please?
23:56<CppDev>(the transfer)
23:56<nagchampa>not within the same DC i believe
23:56<@sjacobs>nope. as long as they are communicating using their private IP addresses.
23:56<CppDev>oh, great thanks!
23:56<nagchampa>oh, even across data centres?
23:57<@sjacobs>the private network is local to a DC, so it wouldn't work across data centers.
23:58<CppDev>also, are all the cpu cores "equal"? e.g. will buying 8x1GB nodes (costing $5x8 = $40) have the same CPU performance as the 24GB node (costing $160)
23:59<MrPPS>except that they'd be split over multiple vps's, therefore one process couldn't use all 8 cores
23:59<MrPPS>but afaik, there's no tiered cores or anything like that
23:59<MrPPS>a core is a core is a core :)
23:59<CppDev>yeah, i understand this
23:59<CppDev>oh great!
23:59<CppDev>actually, i have to say, your offers are really great!
23:59<MrPPS>:)
