05:47<eva_>hi there...
05:47<eva_>I have one question
05:47-!-mode/#linode [+l 353] by ChanServ
05:48<eva_>How much Managed cost? Didnt find any pricelist on
05:48<@jhaas>$100/linode/month -
05:48<@jhaas>if you have 2 linodes it's $200/month
05:49<@jhaas>(also keep in mind Managed is an incident response team, not *Fully* Managed)
05:49<eva_>yes i ve seen this, but it doesnt really make sense... Is it 100/month, no matter what plan you choose?
05:50<@jhaas>ah sorry, that's on top of the linode cost. if you have a managed Linode 8G it's $140/month
05:51<eva_>thats what I meant... so no matter what plan you choose 100$/month is steady price...
05:51<@jhaas>yes the $100/month is steady
05:52-!-Cromulent [] has joined #linode
05:52-!-Cromulent is "Cromulent" on #linode
05:52-!-mode/#linode [+l 354] by ChanServ
05:52<eva_>One more about pricing... lets say i choose Linode 8GB, but dont use all resources...
05:53<eva_>... will i pay $40 / mo or $.06 / hr (which will lead to less fees?
05:53<eva_>$40 / mo is just the minimum?
05:54<@jhaas>$40/month is the maximum, so technically you get a few days free at the end of the month based on the hourly rate.
05:55<eva_>so, it can be less depending on the resourxes used or this is exactly calculated, so it never happens?
05:56<@jhaas>The RAM and Disk are dedicated, so you are charged the hourly rate as long as the linode is active (read as: not deleted completely).
05:56<@jhaas>It can be less in a given month if you add it partway through the month, or delete it partway through the month.
05:57<eva_>so prices are fixed !
05:58<@jhaas>Yes. They aren't affected by resource usage, or if it's shutdown or not.
05:58<eva_>Why do you use irc for support, rather than an online chat system? I havent used irc since 90s :P
05:58<grawity>irc is an online chat system
05:58<@jhaas>this is actually the community channel
05:59<@jhaas>we don't have an official chat support system, but quite a few employees (and more customers) do like to hang out in here
05:59<@jhaas>!point grawity
05:59<linbot>jhaas: Point given to grawity. (7)
05:59<eva_>Yes but your anserw are official, right?
06:00<@jhaas>Yep, any ops are official
06:01<eva_>grawity i know its an online chat system and I bet you understood what my point was...
06:01<eva_>Anyway, seeing you very soon
06:01<eva_>Take care and thank you

06:03*jhaas managed to get most of his friends onto xmpp
06:03<@jhaas>and now a few of them are moving to matrix
06:04<Cromulent>one of the games I'm following is going to use XMPP so you can chat with people in-game even if you are on your mobile phone
06:04<@jhaas>League of Legends does that (unofficially)

06:39<JamesTK>Doesn't Discord do voice?
06:40<Ikaros>That it does.
06:40<Cromulent>yes that is why it winds me up
06:40<Ikaros>Though I keep myself muted.
06:41<Ikaros>The Discord server I'm administering, we focus on chat mostly, we use a relay bot to relay messages between the main channel and a channel on the other IRC network I'm on.
06:44<Cromulent>I wonder how many Mumble server slots you could have running on a $5 Linode
06:44<Ikaros>Mumble isn't THAT heavy on resources is it?
06:45<Cromulent>no I don't think so but then again I've never run it before so no idea how it pans out in practice

09:39<Anjan>How to change FTP permission
09:41<ponas>that depends. you'll need to be more detailed. which ftp server software? what kind of permission?
09:43<Anjan>I am trying to delete some files from backup folder in Root but its not allowing me to delete as its saying Permission Denied. I need to delete some as because disk Storage is full and we could not login. Here is some files /srv/www/backup I want to delete.

09:47<ponas>in that case try lish

19:29<dwfreed>^ support can exclude particular disks, yes
19:30<dwfreed>note that swap is not really backed up, even though it's included in backups; it is simply checked whether it is swap

20:35<tafa2>one of my linodes has sustained a rather unusual ssh brute force attempt
20:35<tafa2>from an IP address owned by the Ministry of education in Thailand
20:36<tafa2>They running script kiddie classes?
20:38<zifnab>question: what's the easiest way to find a network bottleneck?
20:39<tafa2>local network?
20:39<zifnab>i have a linode in newark that's taking an eternity uploading files to a box in montreal
20:40<zifnab>i'm unsure of who to open the ticket with, both sides have ample bandwidth available (the linode has 1gbit out, the montreal box has 500mbit in, i'm seeing ~320kbit)
20:40<zifnab>speed tests look fine in both places, which leads me to think it's a bottleneck somewhere between them
20:41<@mtjones>All Linodes run on SSDs so it's unlikely to be the disk. It might be the CPU but in most cases it's the connection or latency. Try running an MTR report from your Linode to the Montreal location, then another one in the other direction. There's a guide on MTRs here:
20:41<zifnab>they both look normal :P
20:42<@mtjones>Hm, check to see if there's a process using a lot of CPU, or if your Linode's running out of memory.
20:43<zifnab>ffs, box on the far side to a cogent speedtest server says about 1mbit
