06:39<tanja84dk>I'm having a small issue. I have tried to follow this guide https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/vpn/set-up-a-hardened-openvpn-server to setup our new openvpn server on a new linode, but for some reason then I'm getting a error with TLS ( maybe bad encryption/certificates ). What can I do to try to fix it
06:40<tanja84dk>the error is "TLS_ERROR: BIO read tls_read_plaintext error: error:14090086:SSL routines:ssl3_get_server_certificate:certificate verify failed", "TLS Error: TLS object -> incoming plaintext read error", "TLS Error: TLS handshake failed"

06:41<Zimsky>check your compression stuff matches on both ends
06:42<Zimsky>just thinking about the "read error" bit
06:43<scotti>mikegrb: why did you quit Linode sir
06:43<scotti>you and dwfreed
06:43<scotti>is there some internal company drama going on?
06:45<tanja84dk>Zimsky, well the client that I try to connect from is actually the client there have generated the certs, keys etc because the guide said you shoudnt create them on the vps. So I would think the compression should be okay. I have also just to be safe taken the server config and client config from the tutorial just to make sure the settings should match
06:45<tanja84dk>Zimsky, but thanks I will try look at that again
06:47<nate>scotti: People can't ever leave companies simply because they found better jobs or more suitable ones?
06:48<scotti>nate: why the hell would you ever think that
06:48<scotti>of course they can leave
06:48<scotti>but my question is why did mikegrb and dwfreed leave
06:48<scotti>after a decade
06:48<nate>scotti: The fact they're still in here hanging out and helping people at least to me feels like common sense would imply unlikely to be dramatics
06:49<scotti>nate that totally means there is drama
06:49<tanja84dk>Zimsky, but the weird thing is actually I have never got TLS to work on openvpn even on the old server
06:49<nate>I can think of a variety of reasons people would quit a job, especially after a decade
06:49<scotti>internal company drama we can't see on IRC
06:49<nate>lol okay
06:49<scotti>IRC != IRL
06:49<scotti>Linode makes their employees show up in person
06:49<scotti>that's where things get PERSONAL
06:50*nate waddles away from the tinfoil before it interferes with his wifi signals :P
06:50<Zimsky>tanja84dk: make sure both sizes are using compression (comp-lzo) or not
06:51<Zimsky>nate: depending on a number of factors, the tinfoil hat might either attenuate or amplify signal propagation
06:51<tanja84dk>Zimsky, none of the sides are using that
06:52<tanja84dk>Zimsky, could it be a tls-cipher issue where one of the ends dont support that tls-cipher
06:55<Zimsky>nate: also, why are you not using PTP encrypted tunnels along armoured fiber lines
06:55<Zimsky>it is most secure
06:55<Zimsky>tanja84dk: it could be
06:55<Zimsky>make sure those are the same too

07:00<ponas>tanja84dk: that actually sounds like a waste of time tbh
07:01<ponas>tanja84dk: just continue debugging :-)
07:01<Zimsky>wouldn't reinstall the server
07:01<Zimsky>maybe redo ovpn if absolutely necessary
07:01<Zimsky>but the configs are so simple
07:01<tanja84dk>ponas, well the only thing that were on the server were a frest ubuntu and then the openvpn. Nothing from the production were moved yet
07:01<ponas>still though

07:03<tanja84dk>and everything were setup as in the tutorial ( checked several times ) so I actually dont think it is a config error
07:03<ponas>does it work if you try a different client?
07:03<tanja84dk>because if it is then there is a error in the tutorial on the linode tutorials

07:05<@jhaas>are we talking about server-side encryption certs or client-side auth certs?
07:05<@jhaas>based on that error from before I was wondering if it might have just been a self-signed verification problem or something
07:06<tanja84dk>jhaas, TLS enryption actually dont know if its server side or client side

07:41<tanja84dk>isnt there some files you have to copy to the server so it know about the clients? The tutorial is only talking about copying files to the server after you have created the keys for the server

07:42<@jhaas>i think the tutorial has you make one cert pair for the server and the another for all clients; if I read it correctly each client will use the same login cert
07:42-!-mode/#linode [+l 349] by ChanServ
07:42<@jhaas>i haven't gone through it line by line but yeah, I'd imagine both those things have to get copied to the server at some point
07:42*jhaas might try this guide when he's out later
07:44<hawk>Looks like one keypair per client, which seems more sane
07:45<@jhaas>womp yep i read that wrong
07:45<@jhaas>"Each client device connecting to the VPN should have its own unique key and identifier (client1, client2, etc.). All other certificate information can remain the same"
07:45<tanja84dk>jhaas, its one key pair for each client, but for some reason it only talks about copying to the server after you have generated the keys/certs for the server and before you generate for the clients
07:45<hawk>tanja84dk: Anyway, the server knows the clients based on the clients having certificates signed by its trusted CA
07:46<tanja84dk>hawk, but what i revoke a client
07:46<hawk>tanja84dk: Then you regenerate the CRL (and make sure the server uses it)
07:46<tanja84dk>should I then have to generate completely new certificates for everyone

07:47-!-mode/#linode [+l 350] by ChanServ
07:47<hawk>Why?
07:47<hawk>(If that guide doesn't cover the CRL part, that would be a bit of an oversight.)
07:48<tanja84dk>just think if there is 1000 clients and everyone has to be reconfigured just because one server key is lost
07:48<tanja84dk>instead of just be able to revoke that key
07:48<hawk>12:46:42 hawk | tanja84dk: Then you regenerate the CRL (and make sure the server uses it)
07:49<tanja84dk>and crl is?
07:49<hawk>Certificate Revocation List
07:51<hawk>https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Openvpn24ManPage see crl-verify
07:52*tanja84dk is thinking why is openvpn-as even for private there only need a few numbers of licens
07:53<hawk>??
07:55<tanja84dk>hawk, because then everything cound be managed from the web portal
07:55<@jhaas>tanja84dk: not sure where you stopped, but I'll note the guide you linked is part 1/3
07:55<hawk>tanja84dk: I didn't understand that previous sentence at all, hence the "??"
07:58<tanja84dk>hawk, well if openvpn-as wasnt 150$ each year for hosting is self when you need more then two clients ( 15$ each client ) then I would have moved it to that system
07:58<tanja84dk>https://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/pricing.html
07:59<hawk>tanja84dk: Ok, what you said now I can understand. The previous thing was just a pile of words that didn't seem to go together.
07:59<tanja84dk>jhaas, what well I only needed the openvpn server running and I have not seen anything about it should be a three part
08:00<tanja84dk>then it should have been stated in the title
08:01<tanja84dk>jhaas, I guess that that I have to look around for another tutorial
08:01<@jhaas>part 2 is linked in the intro

13:00<mgarcia2228> I have two questions about the elastic cloud service in Europe

13:01<cbirk>just ask your question mgarcia2228
13:02<mgarcia2228>Thanks.I have a service in another provider for a small mail server and I have found that the IP is blacklisted
13:02<mgarcia2228> Do I have any guarantee that this will not happen?
13:03<cbirk>nah
13:03<cbirk>IPs are reputation based
13:04<cbirk>so if you switch IPs and are sending spam email
13:04<cbirk>then you will get shitlisted again
13:04<cbirk>do you know why you got blacklisted?
13:04<Peng_>If you get an IP that already has an unusually bad reputation, Linode should be willing to change it for you.
13:04<cbirk>that as well ^
13:04<Peng_>(Which you can do anyway by creating a new Linode.)

13:30<jamesjiang>@relidy yea

13:33<@scrane>If you haven't generated one, you will need to generate it in "My Profile" in Linode Manager. https://www.linode.com/api/#authentication
13:33<relidy>Is that a valid error message for APIv3? It's not listed in the error codes section. It doesn't use OAuth
13:34<@scrane>Hm, let's do this instead of guessing. Can you paste your call into PasteBin and share that? Just make sure to censor your API key.
