00:31<millisa>Their assistant was just out getting coffee.
00:40<Peng_>November 2017: 987.61 GB out. Whew, that came down to the wire.
00:41<millisa>Happy Billingsday?
00:43<millisa>just noticed the block store volumes show quantity 721 in this month's invoice.
00:43<millisa>last month the number looks right (744)
00:47<millisa>checked a second account that has a block store, it also has an extra hour for Nov. Sept appears to have the right count (720)
00:47<millisa>and I'm smrt... DST . . .nottabug.
00:48<@jhaas>DST itself is a bug as far as I'm concerned
00:48<millisa>no arguments here.

07:43<rut>hello guys
07:43<rut>i have recently installed ubuntu and php apache and mysql
07:43<Cromulent>hi
07:43<rut>now i want to access phpmyadmin
07:44<rut>how can i do?
07:44<Cromulent>well you can install it on the server but instead I'd highly recommend you use MySQL Workbench over SSH instead
07:44-!-mode/#linode [+l 353] by ChanServ
07:45<rut>how can i do? do i need to remove mysql to install mysql workbench?
07:45<Cromulent>no MySQL Workbench installs on your own computer not on your Linode
07:45<rut>i want like domain.com/phpmyadmin , i want to access like this
07:45<rut>ohk
07:46<rut>i will download it
07:46<rut>so can i upload database via this?
07:48<Cromulent>it would be easier just to upload the mysql dump file to the server using SCP and then just using the mysql command line for that - here is an example https://stackoverflow.com/questions/105776/how-do-i-restore-a-dump-file-from-mysqldump
07:49<Cromulent>basically just this command if you are just restoring a single database - mysql -p -u[user] [database] < db_backup.dump
07:49<rut>yeah i have seen it but since yet i used shared hosting, so they offer directly database access. can i do something like this in linod?
07:50<Cromulent>yes
07:51<rut>how can i?
07:51<rut>i dont want to create database using ssh coding but want to create it by phpmyadmin like shared hosting offers
07:51<rut>are you getting my point?
07:52<Cromulent>then just use MySQL Workbench over SSH - it is far better than phpmyadmin
07:52<rut>it is being installed
07:54<rut>bdw which username use at ssh username?
07:55<rut>i have created one user at the time of setup
07:55<@jhaas>Cromulent: we're actively working on VAT; it needs quite a few changes to our billing infra. obviously didn't make it out this billing cycle
07:56<Cromulent>just your normal username and password rut
07:56<Cromulent>jhaas: ah OK thanks for the info
07:56<rut>Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet',system error:0
07:57<rut>received this error
07:57<rut>still i haven't created sshkey file
07:57<rut>is it necessary?
07:58<Cromulent>an SSH key pair is recommended but not required
08:00<rut>what will be mysql server port?
08:01<rut>it is showing, " can't connect to mysql server
08:01<rut>why?

10:31<Gwyn>Smallclone: Thanks. Calling.
10:32<Gwyn>(So, the expected behaviour is that that button forces a reboot, and this is an error?)
10:32<smallclone>it shouldn't take that long for a reboot to occur
10:33<Zimsky>lish and destroy?

12:21<smallclone>hi, feel free to ask your question
12:21<Tyler>Yeah so I'm looking at some of listed network speeds
12:21-!-mode/#linode [+l 352] by ChanServ
12:22<Tyler>And, for example the Linode 24GB, is listing 40Gbps in and 2000Mbps out, I was thinking can anyone prove a speed test in iperf...or something along the lines
12:23<Tyler>Before I purchase service...
12:23<smallclone>no
12:23<Tyler>I was looking for real world data on the network..
12:23<smallclone>just buy it for like 5 mins and run your own, also it's not as if you're going to receive exactly the speeds listed all the time, there are a lot of factors that go into that
12:23<Tyler>Yeah I know that...
12:24<smallclone>but that's the speed of your connection in the data center
12:24<Tyler>Do you work for Linode?
12:24<smallclone>nope, this is a community channel

12:25<smallclone>if someone in here happens to have a 24GB and wants to run an iperf for you, you might be in luck. or if by chance someone from Linode does, since it's not as if they'd be paying
12:25<smallclone>but really it'd just cost you a few cents to test it yourself
12:25<smallclone>yeah we just kinda hang out and answer questions
12:25<Tyler>That's pretty cool!
12:26-!-mode/#linode [+l 353] by ChanServ
12:27<smallclone>anyway, if you just want to test connection speed between your current location and the Linode, you could use one of their speedtests

15:44<hilo>Thanks
15:44<hilo>I am trying to copy the disk using a Linode guide
15:45<hilo>but is it going to copy over the whole ssd?
15:45<hilo>I have $10 service

15:45<hilo>that's too fat for my comp
15:47<dwfreed>zerofree, compression, and dd conv=sparse are your friends
15:48<hilo>hmm
15:48<hilo>i think i used dd
15:48<hilo>https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/disk-images/copying-a-disk-image-over-ssh
15:48<hilo>the command i used was in part 1
15:49<hilo>the img it seemed to be downloading was very fat
15:49<hilo>like 12gb and going
15:50<smallclone>hilo: did you want to copy everything n your Linode? because that's what you're doing.
15:50<hilo>hmm
15:50<hilo>I just want the important stuff
15:50<hilo>maybe i should just use filezilla
15:53<smallclone>if you have specific stuff in mind, you'd probably be better off. otherwise, you'll need to account for the space of copying everything.
15:53<synfinatic>yeah, that copies a disk image you can mount as a real filesystem
15:53<synfinatic>probably a bit overkill
15:53<hilo>so using that tut, it will just copy the big fat 30 gb ssd?
15:54<synfinatic>it will copy the entire 30GB even if you're only using 5GB of data
15:54<hilo>I see
15:54<hilo>I think i'm only using like sub 2gb
15:54<hilo>thanks Syn, I was wary scared
15:54<hilo>I cancelled that transfer
15:54<hilo>after I saw that 12 gb number
15:55<smallclone>what kind of stuff are you trying to save? if it's in specific directories i'd just tar the whole directory then scp it
15:55<synfinatic>yeah, that's what I normally do
15:56<hilo>what is scp?
15:56<smallclone>just another file transfer protocol, if you're comfortable with sftp / filezilla just use that
15:56<hilo>just whatever was previously hosted
15:56<hilo>all the web stuff
15:57<hilo>yeah I'm more used to filezilla
15:57<hilo>and database stuff
15:57<hilo>php files
15:57<hilo>mysql db's
15:57<hilo>tings like dat
15:58<hilo>is what i want to transfer over
15:58<smallclone>i mean, if you know where all that stuff is, then great
15:58<synfinatic>for mysql db's your best best is to dump the database with mysqldump
15:58<smallclone>otherwise...well you might actually be better off copying the whole thing if you want to avoid missing something
15:59<synfinatic>copying the db files (especially against a running db) is likely to have issues
16:01<hilo>yes i will be using mysqldump
16:01<hilo>yeah I wanted to copy the whole disk to be
16:01<hilo>safe
16:01<hilo>it's also in cold storage as well so I'm not tremendously worried

16:56<Abi_>Okay Thanks. So My issue is this. I want to set up a ufw rule on port 3306 to a remote mysql server. It's really weird because when I use the rule ufw allow 3306/tcp it works fine and I can connect to the remote mysql server, however that allows incoming/outgoing to any server. I want it to be specific. I've tried ufw allow proto tcp from [ip] to any port 3306 however that didn't work.
16:56<Abi_>I'm sorry if I'm being clear enough.
16:57<Abi_>not being clear enough*.
16:57<millisa_>is the 'remote mysql server' a linode or are you trying to connect from a linode to this remote server?
16:57<Abi_>It's a linode.
16:58<smallclone>sudo ufw allow from 1.2.3.4 to any port 3306
16:58<Abi_>The firewall rules on this mysql server are fine
16:58<synfinatic> ufw allow proto tcp from [ip] to any port 3306 <-- looks right to me
16:58<Abi_>Yes it is right! Haha.. It's driving me crazy.
16:58<synfinatic>what does this say: iptables -nL | grep 3306
16:58<millisa_>!paste
16:58<linbot>Please paste longer snippets over at https://bpaste.net/ and not in the channel

16:59<synfinatic>when you run the ufw command it does what?
17:00<synfinatic>error? orr??
17:00<Abi_>There are no errors. The ufw rules on the sql server are fine. The connections to remote mysql server works fine. The client ufw rules are the issue.
17:00<Abi_>The current client ufw rules allow any out/in on port 3306 from any ip.
17:00<Abi_>I want to make the 'any ip' part a specific ip.
17:01<synfinatic>this is what I get: https://bpaste.net/show/d3bff1813b1b

17:02<Abi_>Yeah I don't know. I don't get any output from that command.

17:03<Abi_>My mysql server's ufw rules allows a connection on any port from the client.
17:03<Abi_>Maybe that's why?
17:04<Abi_>Yeah but like I said.. I really think it's a client firewall issue rather then the server.
17:04<Abi_>When I use the rule ufw allow proto tcp from [ip] to any port 3306
17:04<millisa_>paste the output of 'ufw status verbose' for the client and server and maybe we can see?
17:05<smallclone>why would the client need to allow connections from..itself? yeah i don't understand what you're doing
17:05<Abi_>https://bpaste.net/show/ab086817043c
17:06<Abi_>yeah not really from itself. More like TO a certain sql server
17:07<Abi_>I want the Anywhere part for the UFW rule to be the ip for the mysql server.
17:07<millisa_>line 38 appears to allow 3306 tcp out to anywhere
17:07<millisa_>well, 32 and 38
17:08<Abi_>yes but I've tried the: ufw allow proto tcp from [ip] to any port 3306 command
17:08<millisa_>ack. 38 and 41 allow out .
17:08<Abi_>and that didn't work
17:08<Abi_>The reason it is for anywhere right now is cause that's what currently works.
17:09<Abi_>Do you want me to show you the client rules which don't work?
17:09<millisa_>sure
17:12<Abi_>https://bpaste.net/show/575add7ace9f
17:12<Abi_>When I specify an ip the client won't connect to the server then.
17:13<millisa_>there's a different IP in that set.

17:19<millisa_>i think so
17:19-!-mode/#linode [+l 331] by ChanServ
17:19<millisa_>(I'm not 100% on the; don't use ufw that much, but it seemed to work when I tested it with ssh on a system here)
17:20<millisa_>(er, on this)
17:21<millisa_>you may need a corresponding ipv6 rule if you are using it
17:21<Abi_>That's what I was thinking.
17:21<Abi_>How do I add an ipv6 rule?
17:21<Abi_>I've tried adding it with the same cmd as above
17:21<Abi_>However the rules don't have a (v6) next to them
17:21<Abi_>Is there a switch I need to use?
17:23<millisa_>when i put the ipv6 address in the ufw allow command, it said 'Rule added (v6)'.
17:23<millisa_>i see the (v6) in the 'from' column when i do a ufw status verbose. yours doesn't show it?
17:26<Abi_>No (v6) in the from col.
17:27<millisa_>probably will want to see a refreshed bpaste of the ufw status verbose - but before looking, are you able to connect to the mysql server via ipv4 (and no others) using that rule above?
17:27<Abi_>nope I cant.
17:28<Abi_>I was thinking that the mysql server is setup to only accept to ipv6?
17:28<Abi_>Is that possible?
17:29<Abi_>The netstat -autn result shows it's listening on tcp not tcp6
17:30<millisa_>the server rules you posted earlier just show a pair of allows for ipv4 addresses.
17:30<Abi_>So it's probably not that then.
17:33<Abi_>o.o
17:33<Abi_>It works?
17:33<millisa_>does it?
17:33<Abi_>Yes...
17:33<millisa_>hooray!
17:33<Abi_>Why though?
17:33<Abi_>LOL
17:35<Abi_>I don't need a rule for allowing in?
17:35<Abi_>Only out?
17:35<millisa_>are you running a mysql server on the linode that you want to allow inbound on?
17:35<Abi_>Yeah I am.
17:35<Abi_>It's weird..
17:36<Abi_>Yeah idk. I guess I should just leave it this way?
17:36<Abi_>Maybe adding the ipv6 address fixed it?
17:36<millisa_>doubt it.
17:36<Abi_>but that's the only rule.
17:37<millisa_>in my test ubuntu client that i wanted to deny anything inbound or outbound, but only allow ssh to my linode, I had just one ipv4 rule.
17:37<Abi_>ahhhh! No
17:37<Abi_>It's the command you told me to use
17:37<Abi_>This is the col: 104.237.132.254 3306 ALLOW OUT Anywhere
17:37<millisa_>mine looks like htis:
17:37<millisa_>https://bpaste.net/show/aea7480bca87
17:37<Abi_>yep
17:38<millisa_>that line looks like it will allow outbound to the 104.237 address on port 3306.
17:38<Abi_>So i can delete the ipv6 rules then?
17:38<Abi_>yeah that's all I need right?
17:38<millisa_>if you aren't going to use ipv6, sure
17:39<Abi_>Okay I'm starting to understand this a bit better.
17:39<Abi_>Well. Thanks!
17:39<millisa_>you might want to allow dns out
17:39<Abi_>Yeah i was thinking that too.
17:40<Abi_>I don't have a use for it and I disable my firewall when I do updates.
17:40<millisa_>uf allow out to any port 53 (i think)
17:40<millisa_>without the typo...
17:41<Abi_>hmm
17:41<Abi_>is it possible to transfer a linode?
17:41<Abi_>Line from Atlanta to Dallas.
17:41<Abi_>like*
17:41<millisa_>https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/linode-beginners-guide#can-i-transfer-my-linode-to-another-datacenter
17:42<Abi_>I read that I can set a LAN ip and the bandwidth for local data transfer won't be metered.
17:42<millisa_>(you could do it with the backup/restore too)
17:42<millisa_>your IP would change of course
17:43<Abi_>^ the thing about the LAN ip is correct though? It only applies to the same data center right.
17:44<millisa_>traffic on the private ipv4 addresses in the same datacenter and the ipv6 addresses in the same datacenter don't count towards your transfer quota
17:45<millisa_>https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/remote-access#adding-private-ip-addresses
17:45<Abi_>Awesome. Well, thanks a lot millisa.
17:46<Abi_>You've been alot of help.
