10:05<chillerfx>could someone please help me out on an issue? My server is being used to send spam emails by some unknown person. How to resolve this issue? I checked the logs and saw that an old expired domain which was still on my DNS list was being used to send out spam. Now I have removed all those expired domains from my server. One of my main website went unreachable and renders HTTP 500 error
10:05<chillerfx>Hi @iodev
10:06<iodev>you probably were hacked
10:07<Peng_>Could be just an email account was, or it's an open relay
10:08<chillerfx>all other websites are working fine and just one website is rendering HTTP 500 ERROR all of a sudden. Yes, @Peng, could you please provide some tips to resolve this
10:08<chillerfx>My ip address got listed in RBL and SPAMHAUS
10:09<iodev>ok, I think my server is set up now :D
10:11<chillerfx>researched on many forums and still unable to find a clear procedure for this
10:13<ponas>chillerfx: you'll need to figure out how (and if) whatever is sending emails is authenticating to your mail server
10:14<ponas>uh nevermind, you probably fixed that part huh
10:19<chillerfx>any idea why would just one website go down while other websites are up and running on the same server?
10:20<grawity>have you checked the webserver's/webapp's system logs yet?
10:20<ponas>you might have corrupted some webserver configuration while removing the old websites
10:21<chillerfx>@ponas this happened right before I removed the old websites
10:22<chillerfx>at first the error was "Resource ID #36" , then I tried rebooting the server and then the error HTTP 500 came up
10:22<ponas>grawity had a pretty good suggestion
10:22<ponas>all we can do is guess
10:22<chillerfx>it's like 2 hours now and the error still persists, tried clearing cache and tried on a new browser as well, still the same
10:22<ponas>the logs will tell you why, we can't
10:23<chillerfx>yeah, let me check the logs
10:24<chillerfx>is there any specific log file that I should check?
10:25<chillerfx>@grawity
10:26<grawity>yes, the one where your webserver software writes errors
10:26<grawity>e.g. /var/log/apache2/error.log or /var/log/nginx/error.log
10:26<grawity>most of the time, anyway
10:29<chillerfx>this seems to be coming up postdrop: warning: uid=33: No space left on device sendmail: fatal: www-data(33): queue file write error postdrop: warning: uid=33: No space left on device
10:29<chillerfx>on the apache2 log
10:29<chillerfx>when I got to check the syslog
10:29<chillerfx>here's a huge queue of emails waiting to be sent
10:30<grawity>so... you're out of disk space?

10:30<ponas>chillerfx: https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-postfix-flush-mail-queue.html
10:30<grawity>do you see any signs of postfix trying (and failing) to deliver those messages?
10:30<chillerfx>yeah but am sure my websites don't take that much diskspace, I am sure something's going wrong in my server that's eating up all the disk space and sending out spam emails
10:31<grawity>or is it just really a metric ton of them being generated
10:32<grawity>well
10:32<grawity>also take a look at your website's access.log
10:32<chillerfx>Dec 8 06:40:28 polotrendz kernel: iptables_INPUT_denied: IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=f2:3c:91:61:39:4f:00:26:51:c4:00:41:08:00 SRC=116.90.197.107 DST=myserverip LEN=40 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=53 ID=51643 PROTO=TCP SPT=14102 DPT=23 WINDOW=52945 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 Dec 8 06:40:47 polotrendz postfix/scache[6926]: statistics: start interval Dec 8 06:30:47 Dec 8 06:40:47 polotrendz postfix/scache[6926]: statistics: domain lookup hits=0 miss=31 success=0% Dec 8 06:4
10:32<grawity>if somebody is managing to abuse the site to send a lot of spam messages, I'd expect most of them to correspond to some weird-looking HTTP request
10:32<chillerfx>this is the first few lines of the syslog
10:33<chillerfx>then comes the long queue that I mentioned above
10:33<chillerfx>yeah sure

23:21<raijin>has linode imploded?
23:22<Woet>very helpful question indeed

23:30<Celti>A bit more politely: We're not seeing any issues, with linode.com or otherwise. Could you please give us a bit more detail?
23:30<raijin>Oh sure!
23:31<raijin>I'm getting ERR_CONNECTION_RESET whenever I try to connect, either with the browser or ssh
23:31<raijin>ssh_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer
23:32<Woet>you'd figure someone who buys an unmanaged Linux VPS would not need so much encouragement to ask a decent question
23:33<zifnab>question: i have a box that has some secure things on it
23:33<zifnab>i would like to neuter lish for it
23:33<zifnab>what's the easiest way to do that?
23:33<Woet>1) open browser 2) go to lish 3) ??? 4) profit!
23:33<Celti>raijin: If you try `ssh -4` to force IPv4, does it work? I recall having MTU issues before with Linode and ipv6.
23:33<zifnab>read: i do not want lish or glish to be operational on this machine
23:34<Woet>1) open browser 2) don't go to lish 3) ??? 4) profit!
23:34<zifnab>thanks :P
23:34<Celti>zifnab: Disable the gettys on said machine.
23:34<raijin>Celti: I'll try it
23:34<Woet>linode.com works fine over v6 too
23:34<Celti>Lish will still connect, but it won't be able to *do* anything.

23:35<zifnab>Celti: that's a sane approach. i'm assuming a person trying to use lish would get a black screen without a login prompt in that case?
23:35<Celti>zifnab: Yep.
23:35<Celti>Woet: Right... MTU issues being a "pathway" thing, not an issue on Linode's end at all. I'm well aware IPv6 works fine with them.
23:36<zifnab>also, ffs, one of my boxes is on the 3rd migration this month :(

23:45<zifnab>Eugene: you're a systemd wizard: hwo the fuck do i stop getty
23:45<zifnab>linode overwrites /etc/init/tty* on boot

23:46<Woet>zifnab: why dont you just use filesystem encryption
23:47<Eugene>zifnab - correct answer for your concern is: you need to boot your distro's kernel with it disabled.
23:47<zifnab>Woet: i do.
23:47<Woet>zifnab: so whats the issue again
23:48<zifnab>this host accepts ssh from a single host. lish is another form of access to said box, i'd like it dead
23:49<zifnab>meh, i'm happy, moving on, thanks again
23:49<Woet>no worries
23:49<Woet>here to help
23:50<zifnab>its a stupid thing, it has an encrypted partition, but i don't care enough to encrypt root
23:50<zifnab>there's the occasional lish exploit that happens, i figured just killing it / not allowing it access to the box was the easier/more paranoid route to go
23:50<dwfreed>disable distro helper to prevent the overwrite
23:51<Woet>or just dont put your 100 BTC wallet on Linode
23:53<Celti>I bought $5 in BTC this time last year and forgot about it until today, when I discovered it's now ~$90.
23:53<Celti>Kinda wishing I'd bought more than $5 when it was both that cheap and I actually had money. :-p
23:53<zifnab>lol
23:53<zifnab>i had 10 btc at one point
23:53<zifnab>we used 7 for things, 3 i sold for $841 each...
23:53<Celti>You poor bastard. :)
23:53<zifnab>i feel like an idiot now
23:53<Eugene>I had ~100 :-/

23:55<zifnab>give it to me, i'll do it, i want 22k out of it though
23:55<Eugene>That drive was lost years ago.
