#linode IRC Logs for 2017-12-11

---Logopened Mon Dec 11 00:00:00 2017
00:00<millisa>there's a DO doc that I like more than the linode one - if you google how-to-enable-sftp-without-shell-access-on-ubuntu-16-04 you'll find it
00:01<geabenitez>I'll take a look to the links and google search right now, thank you
00:02<dwfreed>millisa: feel free to submit edits :P
00:02<millisa>yeah . . you typo less on your mobile device than I do with my fancy keyboard.
00:03<millisa>(I mostly like the DO doc because it has a bit more explanation at each step)
00:06<neo^>Internet is highly infectious and debilitating.

01:10<zifnab>today's monstrosity
01:10<zifnab>`ls -1 /foo | xargs -I {} -P 5 -n rsync -avh {} user@new-server:/foo/`
01:13<Peng_>I didn't know -I!
01:14<Woet>I didn't know Zimsky
01:15<Woet>wish it stayed that way
01:15<zifnab>i'm not entirely sure why it's needed
01:15<zifnab>i believe it removes newlines?
01:15<millisa>replacement
01:16<zifnab>oh, it replaces {} later on, duh
01:16<zifnab>ignore me :P
01:16<millisa>could do it multiple times too
01:16<zifnab>i'm moving a few hundred gigs of android repos :(
01:16<zifnab>to see how long a migration to a new version of gerrit is going to take
01:17<zifnab>this is always fun: ` data vg0 Cwi-aoC--- 1.74t [lv_cache] [data_corig] 2.79 5.45 0.00`
01:17<zifnab>(giant lvm volume on spinning rust with some SSDs caching in writethrough mode)
01:26<zifnab>i'm pushing gigabit over the atlantic. nice :P
01:26<Zimsky>told you the earth was flat
01:26<Zimsky>Woet: klootzak
01:26<zifnab>we all know light doesn't bend
01:26<Woet>is there an op around?
01:27<Zimsky>Woet: hi I am an op
01:27<zifnab>wait, erm, does that prove or disprove the earth being flat
01:27<Woet>Zimsky: i'd like to report someone for offensive language
01:27<Zimsky>Woet: did someone say f***node?
01:27<Woet>Zimsky: worse
01:27<Zimsky>or d***ord?
01:27<zifnab>flatnode?
01:29<Zimsky>if history has taught us anything, it's that setting people on fire usually kills them
01:30<Woet>always worth making sure thats still the case
01:30*Woet drowns Zimsky in petrol
01:31<Zimsky>zifnab: transmit the data with tachyons so you have a backup before you need it
01:32<zifnab>Zimsky: Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
01:32<Zimsky>zifnab: and as we all know, if you only partially connect a fibre line and use a shitty clock, you can transmit the data through the earth faster than light with neutrinos
01:33<zifnab>aren't neutrinos...scary?
01:33<zifnab>don't they explode on contact with some things?
01:34<zifnab>or radioactivate things
01:34<Zimsky>uh no

14:37<meowmeow>greetings. AWS charges extra for a static IP. Is there a similar charge for a Linnode server? Let's say, the $5 per month server - does that come with a dynamic IP or is it extra for a static IP?
14:38<Zimsky>linode isn't like aws
14:39<Zimsky>it's a vm with a static IP
14:39<Zimsky>fwiw, extra IPv4 addresses must be justified and assigned at the behest of linode
14:40<@scrane>There is also an additional charge of $1/month for additional IP addresses on a Linode
14:40<meowmeow>nice
14:40<meowmeow>ty
14:40<Zimsky>woof
14:46<Ikaros>Hmph.
14:47<Ikaros>Why is it I'm irked when people seem to desire additional IPs...what possible reason would one have for it with the space being depleted as it is. Meh.
14:48<millisa>vips for a failover cluster setup? it's never vips for clustering...

14:49<synfinatic>i have two IP's. one for mail the other for Tor. running both on the same IP is a great way to get stupid people to blacklist your mailserver
14:50<DrJ>running mail at all is a great way to get yourself blacklisted :)
14:52<synfinatic>MSFT is the most difficult to stay clean with. they're the only one I've ever had a problem with in the last 3-4 years that I can recall
14:56<DrJ>sometimes you can get blacklisted at no fault of your own... such as one bad actor getting a range of IPs blacklisted that you are included in
15:00<Zimsky>BUT BUT BUT CLASS C IP FOR SEO
15:01<smallclone>yeah my seo guy says i need separate ips for everything
15:01<Zimsky>DrJ: it's likely the additional address would be in the same range
15:01<synfinatic>pretty sure all my blacklists haven't been my fault. things like "old guy marks email from my wife as spam by accident and I don't have enough positive rep to push back" or "idiot doesn't know the difference between a tor relay and tor exit"
15:01<Zimsky>smallclone: your seo guy likes your money
15:01<Zimsky>or your free friendship?
15:01<Zimsky>idk
15:01<synfinatic>haven't had an issue of guilt by association on linode (yet)
15:03<meowmeow>We only require one IP. AWS charges extra for the one IP. Otherwise it changes everytime you reboot.
15:03<Zimsky>aws are twats
15:04<Zimsky>just look at JamesTK
15:04<smallclone>this is what i picture whenever someone says they have an "seo specialist" http://krl.io/f7494
15:05<Zimsky>that looks like my grandfather
15:06<meowmeow>AWS marketing and relabeling and obfuscation of standard jargon is done by those snake oil specialists. Pull the wool over management's eyes.
15:06<meowmeow>imho
15:07<smallclone>i mean, they have a really complex product..but i don't see how they're being too confusing here. they offer lightsail with static IPs...that's their vps offering that's similar to Linode.
15:09<meowmeow>might be true. lightsail did not exist a few months ago when we came on board. they are starting to be less squirrelly and less smoke and mirrorsy regarding pricing. but it's still bull. Their t2micro is supposed to be $8.67 but it comes out to $66 per month when all is said and done.

15:12<brianrivet>Hi all. I'm relatively new to Linode and I have a question. I have client whose site we are hosting on a Linode server. They have an event they are sponsoring soon that may lead to a significant increase in website traffic. We are a little concerned that if the traffic increases enough to cause issues with performance we may not be able to fix it quickly.
15:13<brianrivet> In order to help prepare, I wanted to see what the procedures are in order to upgrade the server quickly.
15:13<buzzly>multiple SSL certificates on a single apache is a good reason for a 2nd IP
15:13<Zimsky>alright I'm now almost entirely convinced buzzly is just here to shitpost more than me
15:13<brianrivet>Or if there is a way to increase resources on demand in those sort of situations.
15:14<Zimsky>it would surprise even the likes of Woet
15:14<Zimsky>brianrivet: you could just hope for the best, prepare for the worst
15:15<Zimsky>if it's a transient event, the cost of upgrading to a higher plan for that period probably won't cost you much
15:16<dwfreed>buzzly: not really; IE6 and WinXP are long dead
15:16<Zimsky>s/t really//

15:16<Zimsky>back for more already
15:16<meowmeow>one more question.
15:16<brianrivet>Zimsky: yeah I thought about that. I'm thinking it is probably the way to go, I just wasn't sure if there is a way to upgrade on the fly based on demand in case there is an issue.
15:17<Zimsky>brianrivet: you could upgrade 'on the fly' as it were, but it's still minutes of downtime
15:17<meowmeow>say i get the $5 per month server. Can I add about 200GB of storage? And how much extra is it?
15:17-!-mode/#linode [+l 352] by ChanServ
15:17<Zimsky>b l o c k s t o r a g e
15:17<dwfreed>buzzly: new PCI rules will soon mean that you can't support WinXP in its out-of-the-box configuration
15:17<Zimsky>except the beta is probably full
15:17<@mcintosh>it's full in newark only
15:18<Zimsky>the other one is fmt, right?
15:18<brianrivet>Zimsky: If I were to upgrade, am I basically spinning up a new server and redeploying, or is there a way to upgrade a server that is already in place?
15:18<Zimsky>no it upgrades in place
15:19<Zimsky>so you shut down the instance, click the upgraderater button thingy in the manager and it upgradererers
15:19<Zimsky>then start it up again and it'll have the higher resources
15:19<@mcintosh>indeed, the other is fremont
15:19<brianrivet>Zimsky: If I am using Forge to manage it can I still upgrade in place?
15:19<Zimsky>but remember, that takes time
15:19<Zimsky>forge?
15:20<@scrane>brianrivet Upgrading just acts as a reboot as far as the Linode is concerned, except when it comes back up there are more resources.
15:20<@scrane>So long as you aren't using any hardware-specific compilers, it normally wouldn't impact your system significantly
15:20<brianrivet>Zimsky: yeah Laravel forge lets me connect to my Linode account and set up a server from there. I'm guessing it would still work, but I can run a test.
15:20*scrane gives Gentoo some side-eye.
15:21*Zimsky side-eye's scrane
15:21<brianrivet>@scrane ok great. I think that was all I needed to know. Thanks to both of you for the quick reply and the help!
15:21<Zimsky>oh shit I used an apostrophe incorrectly
15:21<Zimsky>seppukku time
15:21<Zimsky>s/k//
15:22<Zimsky>I think it's time for bred
15:23<@scrane>No problem! One other option, brianrivet, would be to use a NodeBalancer
15:23<ericoc>mmm bread
15:24<@scrane>If you set up the NodeBalancer as the front-end (where your DNS points to) with two cloned Linodes behind it, the NodeBalancer will distribute the traffic evenly between the two. If the traffic starts to overload the two backend servers, you can clone one of the Linodes to a new Linode and add that to the rotation without needing any downtime.
15:24<@scrane>It's a little more complicated than just upgrading the Linode, but it's also just a little more seamless if done right.
15:25<@scrane>This document will explain a little better how NodeBalancers work. https://linode.com/docs/platform/nodebalancer/getting-started-with-nodebalancers/

20:38<infinair>windows or linux?
20:39<Peng_>!winode
20:39<linbot>It is possible to run Windows on !kvm Linodes. Here's a set of unofficial instructions: https://github.com/linode/docs/pull/501
20:40<Peng_>Running Windows is possible, but experimental and not officially supported.
20:40<millisa>but mostly they are 'High performance SSD Linux servers for all of your infrastructure needs."
20:40<Peng_>The "L" in Linode stands for Linux
20:40<infinair>ok
20:40<@bhanks>Linode provides several Linux distributions that you can select when you deploy an image to your linode. Windows can be run on a Linode but is not supported by our Support team.
