00:26<Cromulent>well that was uncalled for
00:27<Peng>I dunno, what if we wronged someone like ten years ago but forgot about it
00:30<LouWestin>Client finally busted for abuse or hacking?
00:31<Cromulent>before I put a ticket in asking does anyone know if Linode has any plans for supporting FreeBSD officially? I know you can install it manually but I want to be able to spin up instances using the API with an official OS image
00:32-!-technoid_ [~technoid@50-26-187-10.abilcmtk01.res.dyn.suddenlink.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:32<Cromulent>now they are using KVM I don't see why they wouldn't support it - I imagine it is a reasonably common request
00:37<Peng>Do the backup and image systems support BSD filesystems? Do they always have sysadmins on staff with good BSD knowledge?
00:38<Cromulent>true but I would imagine the need for in-depth BSD knowledge can be mitigated by explicitly saying "no support" - Linode are unmanaged
01:10<dwfreed>Linode isn't going to make a FreeBSD distro template until backups supports it (iirc, images is block level) and support is sufficiently capable of answering basic configuration questions
01:29<trippeh>wooohooo 258,000 rand4k read iops over NFS
01:29<trippeh>RDMA is fun
01:31<trippeh>216,000 if dataset x2 memory (Optane also fun)

01:38<eagles051387>hi guys i am generating an ssh key pair for lish but when it comes to me adding it to my account i am having issues
01:38<eagles051387>im getting the following message SSH Key 1 key-type must be ssh-dss, ssh-rsa, ecdsa-sha2-nistp, or ssh-ed25519.
01:38<eagles051387>the key pair i generated is a 2048 bit rsa key
01:39<eagles051387>this is on the new cloud manager
02:02<Cromulent>eagles051387: did you use ssh-keygen or PuTTY to generate the key?
02:03<Cromulent>and are you sure you are uploading the public key and not the private key?
02:05<Cromulent>ah it is only private keys you need to convert with PuTTY ignore me - I thought you needed to convert public keys as well
02:05<eagles051387>Cromulent: using puttygen
02:05<eagles051387>uploading the public key or trying to anyway
02:06<eagles051387>Cromulent: i do like the new look of the new cloud manager
02:07<Cromulent>are you using Windows 10? Because if you are you can install an OpenSSH client which includes ssh-keygen and you don't need to muck around with converting PuTTY keys
02:08<Cromulent>there is really no need for PuTTY on Windows 10 these days
02:13<eagles051387>so the issue is putty in other words
02:13<eagles051387>Cromulent: ya im on windows 10
02:13<eagles051387>i normally use xshell but fried my ssd last weekend and im still getting my pc back up and running slowly
02:15<Cromulent>eagles051387: go to Settings > Apps and Features > Manage Optional Features > Add a Feature and select OpenSSH Client
02:15<Cromulent>that is the new settings panel not the control panel
02:15<Cromulent>then open up powershell and type ssh-keygen with the same arguments you would use on Linux
02:16<Cromulent>that will also allow you to SSH into machines from powershell using ssh
02:18<eagles051387>Cromulent: this on windows 10
02:18<Cromulent>yep
02:18<eagles051387>you talking about turnring a windows feature on
02:19<eagles051387>hell i might s well then install the linux subsystem for windows in that case
02:19<chesty>how much have microsoft changed? in the naughties google was a search engine only tech savvy people knew and loved and microsoft were actively and openly hostile towards open source. I loved google and hated microsoft, my opinions of them have pretty much flipped and I'm still not entirely comfortable with it yet
02:19<Cromulent>the OpenSSH client is about 5MB to install
02:19<eagles051387>chesty: same here.
02:19<eagles051387>im still rather anti windows only keep it to game
02:19<eagles051387>i can live on mac or linux to be fair
02:19<eagles051387>have 2 laptops one a 4 yr old mac book air and the other a toshiba with fedora on it
02:20<Cromulent>chesty: replace microsoft with bill gates
02:21<Cromulent>since he left microsoft have completely changed - no more embrace extend exterminate
02:21<Cromulent>well if they are planning on exterminating they haven't done it yet :)
02:22<chesty>bill is a good bloke now, how he got his wealth was unethical at the least, probably criminal. but I guess people change
02:22<eagles051387>to be honest even windows server has some interesting linux components in it
02:22<eagles051387>like containers
02:23<eagles051387>you can run vm's in containers on hyper-v
02:23<Cromulent>I'd like to learn windows server one of these days
02:23<eagles051387>Cromulent: using it quite a bit at work
02:23<eagles051387>also need to sit down and do the mcsa exams on 2016
02:23<eagles051387>2019 is going to be another paradigm shift to a more or lesser extent
02:23<Cromulent>going to be upgrading to 2019 when it is re-released?
02:24<eagles051387>Cromulent: i wouldnt
02:24<Cromulent>oki dokie
02:24<eagles051387>as that has more tools to monitor your infrastructure in the cloud
02:24<eagles051387>so if you have or plan on deploying a hybrid cloud infrastructure i am not sure it would be good to go to 2019
02:25<Cromulent>I've never owned a dedicated server so I guess that doesn't apply to me :)
02:25<eagles051387>Cromulent: if you interested in having a read
02:25<eagles051387>https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2018/08/20/everything-you-need-to-know-about-windows-server-2019-part-2/
02:31<eagles051387>Cromulent: thanks for the ssh thing btw
02:31<eagles051387>Cromulent: question
02:31<eagles051387>does the format of the key matter as i have someone this might be useful for
02:31<eagles051387>actually disregard
02:33-!-darwin [d@melik.windwireless.net] has joined #linode
02:33-!-darwin is "Darwin of The Elves" on #linode #bitlbee
02:37<eagles051387>Cromulent: now to figure out how to generate the keys on powershell
02:37<eagles051387>Cromulent: and chesty powershell isnt bad its honestly starting to grow on me as a tool
02:38<eagles051387>as well that is where microsoft is taking win server to be honest
02:38<eagles051387>by default now you dont have a UI powershell ownly
02:39-!-darwin [d@melik.windwireless.net] has quit [Quit: Namaskar]
02:48<chesty>eagles051387, the private key is more secure with `ssh-keygen -o` than `ssh-keygen` I can't remember the details, other options are also better than the default. the default was kept to an old way to remain compatible with red hat from memory
02:51<Cromulent>chesty: I'd just use Ed25519 keys and then you don't need -o
02:51<chesty>fair enough
02:53<eagles051387>Cromulent: i can generate such a key with putty but then to add it to my linode account it complains
02:53<chesty>I'll add that option to my `um ssh`
02:53<eagles051387>Cromulent:
02:53<eagles051387>on powershell what is the default key format rsa 2048
02:54<eagles051387>here we go
02:54<Cromulent>yeah just use ssh-keygen -t ed25519
02:54<eagles051387>btw in powershell im not seeing a -o i am seeing a -O option option
02:55<chesty>eagles051387, what version is it?
02:55<eagles051387>chesty: version of what?
02:55<chesty>ssh
02:56<eagles051387>chesty: if you go into the new settings panel on windows 10
02:56<eagles051387>click apps
02:56<eagles051387>apps and features and then select manage optional features you can install open ssh server
02:56<eagles051387>not sure what version to be fair
02:56<eagles051387>but im guessing the latest
02:56<chesty>i mean can you run ssh -V for us
02:56<eagles051387>OpenSSH_for_Windows_7.6p1, LibreSSL 2.6.4
02:57<chesty>that's the version I have and it has the -o option
02:57<eagles051387>da fuk i found where you can install windows media player now
02:57<eagles051387>thanks to Cromulent pointing me in that direction for the open ssh
02:57<Cromulent>as I said making ed25519 keys automatically uses the -o option - you don't need it if you make that type of key
02:58<eagles051387>got it
02:59<eagles051387>damn thats a short public key
02:59<eagles051387>Cromulent: im getting SSH Key 1 must not be multi-lined.

03:04<eagles051387>Cromulent: for lish do i need to upload the public key file or just the key that is in the file
03:04<eagles051387>disregard
03:05<eagles051387>sorted it
03:06<eagles051387>Cromulent: is there a native win 10 ssh client that i can install seeing as there is a server
03:06<eagles051387>disregard powershell will do it
03:07<Cromulent>oh you installed the server package? There are two packages available - the server and the client package you can pick one or both
03:14<eagles051387>i picked the server
03:14<eagles051387>and it seems to download the client as well
03:15<eagles051387>cuz i can do ssh -i (KEY) -t blah
03:15<eagles051387>except i think i have a bigger issue in the sense I have an ssh key and im locked out of the server even through lish
03:24<eagles051387>i want to scream right now :(
03:25<eagles051387>Cromulent: you still here
03:25<Cromulent>yep

14:59<mojaam>Hello, I'm trying to do a simple restore but it's saying I don't have enough disk space. The thing is, I don't know what to delete or how to resize things properly.

15:06<millisa>do you still have a partition setup on the linode you are trying to restore to?
15:11<mojaam>If by partition meaning the disks, then yes, I see a list of them with names like (512MB Swap Image, Restore <random num> - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Disk (9794 MB, ext4), etc.
15:17<millisa>those disks take up your allocated space; you have to have free space outside of that if you want to restore a backup onto the same system
15:20<millisa>They sort of talk about in this section: https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/disk-images/linode-backup-service/#restore-to-an-existing-linode
15:20<millisa>(if you dont care about that existing ubuntu 12.04 disk that is 9794MB, you could delete it before doing the restore)
