01:52<hdb2>hello - I am trying to follow the instructions on the linode site for switching my kernel. it says to click on the linode, select the settings tab and expand the advanced configuration section, however I don't see advanced configuration, only settings, shutdown watchdog and email alert thresholds. any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
01:54<millisa>are you using the old manager?
01:55<hdb2>millisa: yes
01:55<millisa>sounds like you are following a guide for the new manager
01:56<millisa>in the old manager, the configuration profiles are on the first dashboard tab of the linode. There's an 'edit' to the right of your configuration profile
01:57<hdb2>cool, I'll take a look there and see what I can find. yes, these instructions are for the new manager - didn't even realize that when I was reading it. thank you for pointing it out!
01:58<hdb2>yup, just found it! thank you :)

02:10<hdb2>generally speaking, does Linode recommend using the latest 64 bit kernel or Grub2?
02:11<hdb2>from reading the docs, it appears that the distro supplied kernel is for things like SE Linux, which I'm not running. sounds like the Linode kernel is the way to go
02:12<millisa>most of the newer distributions use the distribution kernel when you spinup a fresh node
02:14<millisa>i'm not sure that they come out and recommend one over the other - use whichever best suits your needs.

10:55<thykka>So I heard Linode is buying ad space in npm postinstall scripts..
10:56<thykka>it's disgusting, and it's what I will remember this company for.
10:56<thykka>please stop. that's all.

10:57<Cromulent>blame npm for selling the ad space in the first place

11:16<rsdehart>Cromulent: no, you mean "Fine, just as long as you remember the company"
11:18<rsdehart>it's not like if Linode doesn't buy the space someone else won't
11:19<rsdehart>I'm not sure thykka understand how advertising works

11:23<FluffyFoxeh>Does npm print ads to your console when you install stuff?
11:24<FluffyFoxeh>That sounds unsavoury but I can't blame the buyer for it

11:30<Cromulent>since I've just upgraded to my first dedicated CPU instance - I'll remember Linode just fine :)
11:32<Cromulent>could I make a feature request please? On the main Linode page where it shows the graph it would be really useful to have a graph showing RAM usage
11:32<Peng>The problem is that the host doesn't know
11:32<Peng>you can install Longview, though
11:33<Cromulent>I've never been able to get longview working
12:10<Cromulent>well the change to a dedicated CPU instance has really helped

22:20<gparent>I'm not sure I understand the answer by tbaka about how the shutdown command could corrupt your disks
22:20<gparent>Doesn't it do a clean shutdown before lassie sees it die and reboots it?
22:21<gparent>I thought it would be *more* dangerous not to do a shutdown in OS, because if the guest OS doesn't respond and shuts down, then eventually the job will force it.
22:29<dwfreed>gparent: your assessment is correct
