21:23<helloworld>Are volumes SSD or HDD-based?
21:23<millisa>the additional block storage volumes or the ones on the linodes?
21:23<helloworld>The additional ones.
21:24<millisa>"Linode Block Storage is powered by a combination of large capacity HDDs and ultra-fast NVMe drives, offering a balance between price, performance, and capacity."
21:26<helloworld>I use Linode VM to build large software project from time to time. So, I need a persistent drive (to take advantage of incremental builds) but I do not need the VM to be active all the time (e.g., when I'm not building the software. Can I use the Block nodes for persistence and what performance penalties there might be?
21:26<millisa>This doc goes into a little more detail -
21:27<helloworld>Thank you!
21:27<millisa>but the volume doesn't go away or have the content deleted if you don't have it connected to a node. You still get charged for the volume whether it's connected or not
21:27<millisa>Same goes for the linode - if it's provisioned you get charged for it (but there's no reason you couldn't resize a non-active node down to a $5 one, assuming your boot volume size will fit)
21:29<millisa>you could even setup your linode to use the block storage as the boot volume. then you wouldn't need to keep the linode around either as long as you setup the new node to use that volume
21:29<millisa>there's a few more docs at
21:31<millisa>important drawback:
21:32<millisa>oops. not that. somewhere it says something about the block storage volumes not being part of the linode backup product.
21:32<millisa>they mention the volumes being replicated 3 times to avoid dataloss - but you'd be responsible for backing up that data somewhere else.
