03:09<zrlsyssec>hi, is there anybody online?
03:11<Peng_>Hello
03:15<zrlsyssec>hi, i would like to ask a technical question about your VM
03:16<zrlsyssec>do you enable PMCs on your virtual machines?
03:16<zrlsyssec>PMC = Performance Monitor Counter
03:18<Peng_>FYI, this is a community channel. Most people here don't work for Linode.
03:18<Peng_>Can you explain what PMCs are? Isn't that a Windows feature?
03:18<zrlsyssec>ah ok, i thought it was a sort of chat sales
03:19<zrlsyssec>anyway PMCs are registers available on the CPU
03:19<zrlsyssec>they therefore do not belong to any specific OS
03:19<zrlsyssec>if you own a VM with ubuntu on linode you can check if they are enabled or not
03:26-!-dsapikas [~dsapikas@ip-89-103-120-110.net.upcbroadband.cz] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:26<nate>zrlsyssec: Since linode doesn't do nested virtualization if I recall correctly then PMU/PEBS -should- be accessible on the Intel ones at least I think. Not sure what the AMD equivalents would be
03:30-!-bio [~oftc-webi@197.48.97.17] has joined #linode
03:30-!-bio is "OFTC WebIRC Client" on #linode
03:30<bio>Hello everyone
03:31<bio>I was wondering if Linode support doing mass port scanning for research purposes? I don't want to end up having my server took down
03:35<zrlsyssec>it's easy to check on an ubuntu machine
03:35<zrlsyssec>if you have one run the following commands:
03:35<zrlsyssec>sudo apt-get install msr-tools
03:35<zrlsyssec>sudo modprobe msr
03:35<zrlsyssec>sudo rdmsr 0x38f
03:36<zrlsyssec>if you get something like 7000000..f
03:36<zrlsyssec>then this means that PMCs are available
03:40<Peng_>bio: I don't have a good answer to your question, but if no one else responds: If you have an account, I think maybe you should file a support ticket and discuss it. I believe research is allowed, but they won't appreciate it if you don't follow ethical guidelines, or if you get their abuse mailbox bombed without warning.
03:42<Peng_>I'm sorry I phrased that in a kind of blamey way.
03:43<bio>Peng_: Thank you! and no worries, I know it's a bit of a grey area. Well masscaning shouldn't cause any trouble, technically speaking it's only sending 60 bytes of data to a port in a system and that's all, no repetition of sending more bytes, no spam, nothing at all.
03:44<bio>The point is, since it's only tiny bursts of packets are sent to each host, the full speed of the internet line is never reached (since no full TCP connection will ever take place), this is not what I want it to be. Instead I want the provider to allow me the full speed even on low packet rates
03:45<bio>For instance a tool used intensively in such research area is Zmap, which supports bandwidth up to 10 Gbps, however I only need 100 Mbps for my research.
