10:23<kharlan>Don’t do it...
10:25<LouWestin>I don't even know how to run a Windows server lol
10:26<LouWestin>#trueconfessions
10:26<dwfreed>it's pain
10:26<kharlan>Step 1: install windows , step 2: set up commercial software step 3: watch things break
10:26<dwfreed>Every windows server admin is an alcoholic for a reason
10:27<LouWestin>I had a student copy of windows... 2008? and another one I can't remember
10:28<kharlan>2008 and 2012 are faster than 2016
10:28<kharlan>it’s a bit funny watching a 2012 TS outperform a 2016 one. Why tf did I upgrade then?!
10:30<kharlan>Anyway, since we hate windows so much we’re trying to use Linux wherever we can.

10:36<LouWestin>For a Linux desktop distro, I like Fedora

11:21<@pwoods>LouWestin: the first computer I remember using anything like a command line was a Gateway 2000 that ran MS DOS. I think it was Windows 3.1, too. I remember needing to write commands at the DOS prompt to bring up a word processor to write a paper for school.
11:22<LouWestin>Oh yeah the Gateways

12:18<LouWestin>nice
12:19<Ikaros>And of course that meant that, when 10 rolled out for the first time and they had their little upgrade program, I got 10 for free.

15:46<gaz082>_brian: thank you and the support team! all is good now!
15:46<LouWestin>I keep my 2fa codes backed up now. I almost learned the hardway with Google authenicator when switching phones
15:46<gaz082>I had forgotten to enter the verification code when changed the 2FA, now i made sure to enter it :P
15:47<LouWestin>It's easy to do
15:47<LouWestin>easy to make that mistake I mean
15:47<LouWestin>I ended up adding my 2fa codes in Authy and Bitwarden
15:53<gaz082>i use google's
15:53<gaz082>good enough
15:53<gaz082>hope they dont kill it
15:56<LouWestin>It's fine, just keep a backup of your codes
15:56<@pwoods>Google's doesn't move between devices. I waited years to update my phone and was locked out of a couple sites when I finally did. I was very lucky to find the scratch codes on an old Linode I've had around since I first started here and us it mostly for notes and projects.
15:57<LouWestin>I keep scratch codes printed out and backed up, but still I have a couple backups of them digitally
15:57<gaz082>i believe now it allows you to move between phones, let me check..
15:58<gaz082>yes, now you can "transfer accounts"
15:58<gaz082>you have import and export options
15:58<gaz082>*accounts
16:02<LouWestin>It'll let you export, but it only as a QR code export
16:04<koenig>It takes me forever to manually write out a QR code. :) :) :)
16:11<gaz082>hah
16:12<gaz082>i checked it, generates a mighty QR code with all the data in it, seems easy enough to port. If you do not have the new phone on hand you can take a screenshot
16:14<LouWestin>That's nothing... dwfreed writes out his ssh keys
16:14<LouWestin>by hand!
16:14<LouWestin>I keep a few backups just in case.
16:15<LouWestin>You never know, authy could go down

18:40<millisa>CES had the epyc 3rd gens. My linode needs this now. And a coldsnap in every location.
18:42<millisa>the coldsnap will improve operations at every datacenter and support location. Fact. https://coldsnap.com/

19:45<chesty>I wonder if it's mathematically possible to calculate the scratch code if you feed into a formula, say, 10 codes and timestamps
19:50<chesty>scratch codes aren't what I thought they were.
19:57<rsdehart>you're a scratch code
19:57<rsdehart>what is a scratch code?

20:25<chesty>as far as i understood it they are one time passwords
20:26<chesty>you can one to log in, and a second one to disable 2fa so you can readd it
20:26<chesty>i a word out, you can use one to log in
20:29<chesty>to make it clearer, scratch codes go into the 2fa form after you authenticate with your usual username/password.
