11:27<Al567>Hi! If I have domain, for example 'www.example.com', and I want any possible subdomain of it to point to a single Linode, what FQDN do you assign this Linode? Also planning on having a wildcard ssl from let's encrypt installed on the Linode. Thanks!

11:36<Al567>thanks for the reference, seen it before and I don't think it solves the problem. If a user visits nonexistantname.example.com I don't want them to be redirected. The url should still be nonexistantname.example.com and it should point to my Linode.
11:37<@_brian>that sounds like a web server configuration thing
11:38<@_brian>setting the name server records just determines the IP address to which the domain resolves
11:38<@_brian>redirection would be caused by apache/nginx
11:39<millisa>or possibly by your code
11:40<@_brian>yeah, i shouldn't have assumed. also that^
11:44<millisa>in nginx, something like *.example.com in the server_name line and a 'root /var/whatever/$http_host/webdir' would do a dynamic document root based on http host.
11:44<millisa>(probably worth checking for security concerns when letting a client determine a path like that)
11:45<millisa>the whole host header injection thing
11:45<Al567>If I set up a domain (domains/create) to ''*.example.com" I should be able to point it to a single Linode - right?
11:45<millisa>Sure
11:46<Al567>then the nonexistantname.example.com should be directed to that Linode?
11:46<millisa>If you set a wildcard to point there
11:46<Al567>ok
11:46<millisa>the non-wildcard entries should take precedence when being served in dns
11:47<Al567>so in creating this Linode - what would be its FQDN?
11:47<millisa>you could even have a wildcard dns entry point to the linode, have the linodes web config set to only do something meaningful with specific vhosts, and have the default vhost serve up a 'i dont know about that name' type site
11:48<millisa>like the hostname? set it whatever makes you happy
11:48<Al567>haha
11:48<millisa>the linode's name doesn't have to have anything to do with the vhosts that point to it
11:48<millisa>it's common for it *not* to match even
11:48<millisa>My web7.foo.com server only serves websites for *.bar.com
11:50<Al567>alright
11:50<Al567>I'll give it a try!
11:50<Al567>thanks for helping out

16:15<bss>from what I've seen of handshake domains, they managed to reimplement the idea of registering domain names by being incompatible with DNS, in the name of "decentralization" and the blockchain (because of course), but you still need to pay another entity to register and/or renew, so all that seems to be accomplished is thumbing your noise at ICANN?
