00:23<Cromulent>Nivex: please tell UK ISPs to enable IPv6 - most of them don't support it all
00:24<Cromulent>only benefit of the one I'm on at the moment is that I get a static IPv4 address

06:12<Cromulent>I'm getting a 404 error when trying to use mod_status for use with Linode Longview Pro Apache monitor - I've tested it in lynx and it does indeed error out but everything else seems to work fine. I've followed the troubleshooting guide but I'm really not sure what I am doing. Initially it was giving a 403 error code so I am heading in the right direction I just feel a bit lost at the moment
06:26<Cromulent>interesting - when using curl to view the server status page it says document moved permanently but when using lynx it gives a 404
06:27<Cromulent>both of those commands running directly inside the Linode

10:49<Nivex>oh, heh, I didn't see I was talking into the void. I run with joins/parts/quits suppressed
10:55<Robdgreat>I switched from that to smartfilter or whatever
10:56<LouWestin>I have the parts turned on here just so I can use next lol
11:31<FluffyFoxeh>I really should suppress joins/quits but there are a few channels where I actually care about them
11:31<FluffyFoxeh>Have to figure out how to make that work on weechat. I'm sure it's possible
11:32<Robdgreat>you should be able to do it on a channel by channel basis
11:32<Robdgreat>/ignore #linode parts joins quits
11:32<Robdgreat>that works in irssi
11:35<Nivex>I have it default off but on in the channels I care about in Weechat. Unfortunately I set it up years ago so I don't remember how :)

11:39<FluffyFoxeh>Nivex: yeah, that's basically what I want
11:39<elvan>hi can anyone help how i start with linode? I am TOTALLY new and very confused.
11:39<Robdgreat>FluffyFoxeh: sure, if you save your settings thereafter
11:40<Robdgreat>elvan: what are you confused about specifically?
11:40<FluffyFoxeh>elvan: What brings you to Linode? Linode offers VPS's, which are basically Linux VMs in a datacentre that you can use for whatever you want.
11:41<FluffyFoxeh>What do you want to do with yours?
11:42-!-J-Node_ [~root@2605:a601:aa30:fe00::83a2:6799] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
11:43<elvan>i will create a website using linode's VPS. By the help of youtube videos, i managed to create a linode. But i didnt arrange image and marketplace as it is said in the guide. And now i dont know how to rearrange them.
11:44<elvan>actually i really need a video telling how should i configure ssl, domain, wordpress etc.
11:44<Robdgreat>elvan: Linode has an extensive documents library, though I think most of it you have to read
11:45<Robdgreat>I don't know how much video content they offer
11:45<elvan>so they dont have videos?
11:46<FluffyFoxeh>personally I prefer reading, it's faster and I can pick out the relevant info more easily
11:46<elvan>https://www.linode.com/docs/guides/linode-beginners-guide/
11:46<FluffyFoxeh>I don't know if they have videos, I've never checked
11:47<elvan>anyway i will continue to search
11:47<FluffyFoxeh>Linode is really a self-service platform. I believe that learning to set up and administer a server is a valuable skill, but if you really only care about running a website and nothing else, there are web hosting services
11:48<Robdgreat>that's kinda what I was about to say, but the phone rang
11:48<FluffyFoxeh>can't vouch for any service in particular as I don't use them
11:48<elvan><FluffyFoxeh> but vps is faster, isnt it?
11:49<Robdgreat>depends on if you count the learning curve of running the whole server yourself
11:50<FluffyFoxeh>Not necessarily. The performance of VPS providers and shared webhosts depends mostly on the same factors
11:50<elvan>so, you say i can not learn :(
11:50<Robdgreat>elvan: no one said that
11:50<FluffyFoxeh>no, you can learn. and if you want to, I highly encourage it
11:51<FluffyFoxeh>I'm just saying, if you want to press a button and host a website, the closest thing on Linode is a stackscript that installs wordpress and stuff for you
11:51<Robdgreat>I'm saying learning takes additional time (which is objectively true)
11:51<FluffyFoxeh>But it might still require some SSHing and manual configuration
11:52<elvan><FluffyFoxeh> ok i will check stackscript

11:53<FluffyFoxeh>Actually, question for anyone else lurking, are stackscripts still the go to for one click installs or is it Marketplace now?
11:53<FluffyFoxeh>and he's gone
11:53<FluffyFoxeh>well, my question still stands
11:54<FluffyFoxeh>I've never used any of the "Marketplace" one-click installs. Don't really know what you get when you do that
11:55<FluffyFoxeh>Frankly, I'm not a fan of the name. It implies a purchase of software or such, despite the fact that it appears to consist exclusively of scripts to install common, gratis software
11:55<@_brian>Marketplace is just what we renamed "One Click Apps", it's all StackScripts
11:56<FluffyFoxeh>Ah, I see
11:57<FluffyFoxeh>One Click Apps seems like a better name. As a newb I'd probably assume Marketplace was something else, like some kind of store
11:58<@_brian>yeah i didn't see anything wrong with the old name either
11:58<@_brian>i wish we'd rename Linode Managed though :)
11:58<FluffyFoxeh>heh
11:58<FluffyFoxeh>Linode Incident Response
11:59<@_brian>perfect
11:59<FluffyFoxeh>Or if you like markety names, Linode ServerCare+
11:59<FluffyFoxeh>(that was a joke, please don't call it that)
12:00<@_brian>haha got it
12:00<FluffyFoxeh>:D
12:19<Cromulent>I'm so stuck on this mod_status thing for Longview Pro and had a ticket in for like 12 hours with no response which is unlike Linode - normally they are very quick
12:21<Nivex>welcome to the "new normal"

12:47<elvan>hi, can i ask a question: do i have to connect my linode by SSH?
12:47<Robdgreat>as opposed to what?
12:47<Robdgreat>SSH is the normal way to connect to a remote server
12:48<Robdgreat>if you want something like VNC you'll need to set it up yourself
12:48<dwfreed>also vnc in itself is not secure; tunneled over SSH is much better
12:49<elvan>i thought root password is enough. oh my god i am totaly nev in linode is there any video that telling everything that i should do on linode? guides are not enough
12:50<elvan>i mean very basic things that i arrange on linode. what are the basic thing to do?
12:50<elvan>things
12:51<Robdgreat>elvan: have you ever used Linux before?
12:52<elvan>i created a wordpress website
12:52<Robdgreat>on a vps?
12:53<elvan>on normal serversd
12:53<Robdgreat>so, shared hosting?
12:53<elvan>web servers
12:53<elvan>yes
12:53<Robdgreat>server administration is a complex beast. by no means insurmountable, but there are a lot of moving parts
12:55<elvan>so?
12:55<Robdgreat>ok, let me try a different tack
12:55<elvan>ok
12:55<Robdgreat>you're not likely to find a video that tells everything there is to know about administering a server
12:56<Robdgreat>you posted the link to the getting started guide. Did that not help at all?
12:57<elvan>https://www.linode.com/docs/guides/getting-started/
12:57<Robdgreat>yeah, that one
12:58<elvan>Connect to Your Linode via SSH
12:58<elvan>i am trying to figure out this title
12:58<elvan>but i didnt understand anything about 3. and 8.
12:59<elvan>Select the Distribution, Marketplace App, or Image you would like to use.
12:59<elvan>i chosed distribution
13:00<Robdgreat>if you want to run a wordpress site, maybe you could choose the wordpress marketplace app
13:00<elvan>and in Marketplace i think i will need wordpress and cpanel(i bought cpanel license from other provider by the way)
13:01<elvan>but what is "image"

13:02<Robdgreat>a disk image
13:02<Robdgreat>not something that applies to this situation
13:02<Robdgreat>if you wanted to run a distribution that isn't offered in the list
13:02<elvan>and what is this guide saying in 8th. Should i do them or not? İ mean are they obligatory or not?
13:03<Robdgreat>clicking Create? Yeah you need to do that
13:03<elvan>no :))
13:04<elvan>i mean did you see the sentences below: Update your billing and account information
13:04<Robdgreat>it says you'll be able to do that. It isn't instructing you to do that
13:04<elvan>Add additional Linode services, like Block Storage
13:04<Robdgreat>all it's instructing you to do is click create
13:04<elvan>Open a support ticket and perform other administrative tasks
13:05<Robdgreat>yeah, another thing you'll now be able to do
13:05<Robdgreat>"You will be able to:"
13:05<Robdgreat>the only *instruction* on 8 is "click create."
13:05<elvan>why do they want me to open a support ticket?
13:06<Robdgreat>they don't.
13:06<elvan>reallyyy?
13:06<elvan>ok and disk image is not necessary for me
13:06<elvan>?
13:06<FluffyFoxeh>elvan: You need an SSH client, like PuTTY on windows (or maybe now they built ssh in and you can use it from cmd.exe, not sure)
13:07<FluffyFoxeh>Alternatively, just click "Launch LISH console" from the dashboard to get a command line
13:07<FluffyFoxeh>It runs in your browser and though it's not technically SSH you can get a shell and do all the same things
13:07<elvan><FluffyFoxeh> thank you
13:08<FluffyFoxeh>heading out now, good luck
13:09<Robdgreat>elvan: no, it says distribution, marketplace app, *or* disk image :)
13:10<react>If you lack systems administration experience and all you need is Wordpress, then this seems mighty silly
13:10<elvan>hmm thank you robdgreat
