#mythtv IRC Logs for 2003-08-29

---Logopened Fri Aug 29 00:00:02 2003
00:01<linagee>Captain_Murdoch: it's probably just linux acting up. having 0 bytes free is not the best thing in the world to be doing
00:02<linagee>Captain_Murdoch: although i was getting "Not enough free buffers" (repeated) from the ivtv module, so that may have something to do with mythtv locking
00:02<linagee>(ivtv probably doesn't like zero bytes disk free either)
00:05<tmk>ivtv doesn't care much
00:05<tmk>it just fills up its buffers
00:05<tmk>then ignores any new stuff

01:01<mikegrb>tmk what is the most compatable way to right stuff to an i2c bus?
01:02<mikegrb>I've got a device address and then the register address and the data I want to write all in my code I just need to write the data out
01:03<mikegrb>tracing through some other code that acomplished this is a very long string through many files :

03:08<jarodwilson>Chutt: whatcha think about a patch that adds a menu item to the codecs setup that says "I've got a PVR-x50", and the lower info screen explains that there are no options to set?
03:08<Chutt>doesn't work with multiple cards
03:08<jarodwilson>Or, even better, a lower info screen that lets you...
03:08<jarodwilson>oh, nevermind then.
03:09-!-mechou [] has left #mythtv []
03:09<jarodwilson>I assume you mean in the case of a system w/a PVR-x50 and a non-PVR-x50
03:09<jarodwilson>I thought I might be on to something for about 30 seconds there... :)
03:10<jarodwilson>So the grander solution would be codec settings on a per-card basis
03:10<Chutt>something like that
03:10<jarodwilson>but I assume that would be no trivial feat
03:11<jarodwilson>Or just leave it, since it works. :)
03:14<jarodwilson>Hm... So there are 3 options in that menu, but the docs say "Currently, MythTV supports two different video encoders, MPEG-4 and RTJPEG".
03:14<jarodwilson>Is that section of the docs out of date?
03:15<jarodwilson>I think I recall reading that when the PVR was only supported in CVS, and just assumed the 3rd option was for the PVR, since it said hardware in it...
03:16<jarodwilson>I'll see if I can scrounge up a doc patch for Robert.
03:29<Chutt>apparently my last commit broke stuff
03:29<Chutt>ah well
03:33<bline>heh imdb added some sort of protection
03:33<bline>your browser or proxy server isn't identifying itself and is blocked because we don't trust it to behave.
03:39<jarodwilson>Who's browser?
03:40<jarodwilson>(or more to the point, were you talking to me? I assume not...)
03:40<jarodwilson>But I do have measures in place to prevent me from being identified. :)

19:00<vektor>Like, to call a method you usually do object.method(argument) or objectptr->method(argument), and for a static function (not a method) that's defined in an object's namespace, then you say Object::function(arguments).
19:01* vektor not sure what level of C++ programmer you are.
19:01<mikegrb>very novice :-)
19:01<mikegrb>so I'm calling it as if it were a static
19:01<vektor>Does my statement make sense to you then?
19:03<mikegrb>the ptr->method(arg) way of doing things would take: Xbox XboxHardware; or is that Xbox *XboxHardware; as I want a pointer? then XboxHardware->ChangeLED(blah)?
19:04<vektor>Hey dude, there's a spelling error above.
19:04<vektor>Xbox::ChangeLED(QString LEDPhase)
19:04<vektor>Check that first.
19:04<mikegrb>errr, had a case error last night <g>
19:04<mikegrb>yup it is in the code that way lemme give it a shot
19:05* mikegrb is glad he cut'n pasted that bit
19:06<mikegrb>cannot call member function `Xbox::ChangeLED(QString)' without object <- at least it makes more since now :-)
19:06<vektor>Yeah, exactly.
19:06<vektor>And you're right, if you had an object on the stack (Xbox XboxHardware;) then you'd use XboxHardware.ChangeLED(QString::fromAscii("gggg"));
19:06<mikegrb>I'm guessing that is probably why it didn't work when I tried it the other way
19:07<vektor>And if you had a pointer (Xbox *XboxHardware;) and it was pointing at a valid object, you would call XboxHardware->ChangeLED(blah);
19:07<vektor>I recommend you buy a book on C++.
19:09<mikegrb>well I have a few on my safari book shelf but it has been a bit since I read through them... I think I'll probably switch it to static since I want to be able to call this from various places in the code such as plugins and what not and passing a pointer to every plugin would require lots of rewrite and be stupid... am I on the write track with that line of thought?
19:10<mikegrb>Yeah! it compiles now :-)
19:10<vektor>You may be confusing static functions and static data. I can't tell.
19:10* mikegrb heads over to the bookshelf to read up
19:10<mikegrb>thank you for your help though vektor

19:15<mikegrb>vektor: I see :-) const functions can't change member data, this would work now but not really in the future :/ I will do more reading but thank you for getting me past this road bump

19:19* bbeattie curses dvi cables
19:20<bbeattie>someone at my lug came over with a 10' dvi cable and it worked, I had everything setup right, my 15
19:20<bbeattie>my 15' cable is bad, or too long
19:21<bbeattie>His shuttle didn't even work with my cable
19:21<mikegrb>vektor: thanks for the correction
19:21<bbeattie>Now I have to spend part of my friday ohm'ing out the cable to see if it's bad
19:21* mikegrb continues browsing books
19:22<bbeattie>and what's better is my system locks if I have DVI enabled in my X conf, and it's not there.. 5 seconds after X starts or I remove the cable, and no system.
19:23<mikegrb>vektor: thanks! that looks like exactly what I wanted :-)
19:24<mikegrb>bbeattie: :/ I hate when that happens

21:03<hyperm>i was having problems when i first installed , what is the error
21:04<dwmurphy>something that looks like a db error, but let me finish reseting that and trying again.
21:05<hyperm>i had to get a patch
21:05<hyperm>when i first installed
21:05<hyperm>someone here linked me , i dont have it now ;/
21:05<hyperm>but you need it otherwise it wont work
21:05<Chutt>there aren't any patches for xmltv.
21:06<hyperm>i had to get one for zap2listings
21:06<Chutt>you don't need one now.
21:06<Chutt>haven't for weeks.
21:06<hyperm>i installed like one week ago
21:06<hyperm>but anyways
21:07<Chutt>xmltv 0.5.16 was released with the patch you're referring to over two weeks ago.
21:08<hyperm>hrmm my bad
21:08<Chutt>and it's not even required now, since zap2it fixed things on their end.
21:08<hyperm>maybee it has been that long ;/
21:08<Chutt>you're just full of disinformation, aren't you?
21:08<hyperm>sounded like a similiar problem i had i didnt know it got updated, since there is no news on this stuff
21:09<Chutt>And just a note to anyone who's wondering -- XMLTV 0.5.16 was released recently to fix a temporary problem with tv_grab_na. This MythTV release is of course compatible with it, 0.5.15, and 0.5.14, so use whatever you want.
21:09<Chutt>from the mythtv webpage.
21:09<Chutt>yeah, no news.
21:10<dwmurphy>hmm.. sec
21:10<hyperm>well when the problem existed there was no news on the site

21:14<Chutt>rkulagow, have a good trip/whatever?
21:15<rkulagow>texas. august. fucking hot.
21:15<rkulagow>but other than that, sure.
21:15<dwmurphy>ouch ;)
21:21<rkulagow>in good news, (not that i should be totally surprised), my box did multiple recordings while i was gone. and as an added bonus, it also maintained pause on a program that i had started watching and then forgot about. so, you can successfully pause a program for at least 6 days (if it's been pre-recorded)
21:23<dwmurphy>so the my update seems to be behaving this time. i dropped and recreated the db. all good
21:36<dwmurphy>cool. worked.
