00:17 | <FryGuy-> | it started recording friends i guess and got stuck |
00:17 | <FryGuy-> | had to kill the backend and restart it to delete it |
00:17 | <mrra> | Ok, I got everything working for the most part, I'm watching tv, but the audio is like 2 seconds behind, any ideas? |
00:18 | <FryGuy-> | you need to make sure that your CAPTUR is working instead of just the sound card doing the work |
00:18 | <mrra> | everything works great with xawtv on the same system |
00:18 | <Chutt> | mrra, you didn't read the setting up the mixer section of the docs. |
00:18 | | * mrra goes off to read docs |
00:19 | <mrra> | sure enough, docs talk about this.... |
00:27 | -!- | mechou [~mchou@12-235-7-243.client.attbi.com] has left #mythtv [] |
00:33 | <FryGuy-> | isn't that what I said though? :p |
00:42 | | * tmk tries the latest cvs |
00:42 | <tmk> | is it dangerous in any way to run myth while mythfilldatabase is going? |

00:52 | <Chutt> | tmk, nope |
00:53 | <Chutt> | aside from the very first time, until it gets the channel table populated |
00:54 | <tmk> | ok |
00:54 | <tmk> | hmm some channels have gone missing |
00:56 | <tmk> | that's strange |
00:56 | <tmk> | fox sports world disappeard |
00:57 | <Captain_Murdoch> | tmk, was i2cdump the command you said to use to find out the tuner's address? |
00:58 | <tmk> | no |
00:58 | <tmk> | option to i2c-algo-bit |
00:59 | <tmk> | is bit_scan |
00:59 | <tmk> | i believe |
00:59 | <Captain_Murdoch> | ok, thanks. |
00:59 | <tmk> | that will print out all the addresses (in hex) that are found on the i2c bus |
00:59 | <tmk> | then just edit ivtv.h and update them |
00:59 | <tmk> | don't forget to make clean |
01:05 | <Captain_Murdoch> | thanks. it's at 60 it appears. |
01:06 | <Captain_Murdoch> | locked my test machine. |
01:07 | <tmk> | 60 is usally the digitizer i think |
01:07 | <tmk> | load the driver with debug=127 |
01:07 | <tmk> | and msg me the last few lines of the log |
01:08 | <mrra> | ok, after much playing with alsamixer I got things mostly working |
01:08 | <mrra> | now audio is changing volume on it's own though... quite odd |
01:09 | <mrra> | things will get quiet for a bit, then come up to a normal volume, then go quiet again |
01:09 | <Captain_Murdoch> | log only showed 21, 50, and 60. having to reboot now. I tried changing the pci id. |
01:11 | <tmk> | does it have an ir receiver? |
01:11 | <Captain_Murdoch> | no |
01:12 | <mrra> | this is on a k7 athlon... 1200Mhz... I would assume I have enough horsepower to handle this |
01:13 | <Captain_Murdoch> | mrra, easily |
01:14 | <mrra> | hmmm |
01:16 | <Captain_Murdoch> | how do I message in xchat? |
01:17 | <Captain_Murdoch> | ahh, /help |
01:19 | <mrra> | ok, mixer settings are delayed... |
01:31 | <mrra> | alright, another question. I've got a cable box in order to get channels such as HBO. changing channels on the tv tuner card itself won't work, I need a way to change channels on the cable box |
01:31 | <mrra> | I was thinking some sort of remote perhaps that mythtv could control? |
01:31 | <tmk> | sure |
01:31 | <mrra> | any recommendations? |
01:36 | <tmk> | lirc has a prog to do it |
01:45 | <tmk> | chutt: how much xml does mythtv need from xmltv |
01:45 | <tmk> | ie it gives audio options etc |
01:45 | <tmk> | rating |
01:46 | <tmk> | is that all necessary |
01:47 | <Chutt> | naw |
01:47 | <Chutt> | i don't remember what all it actually parses |
01:47 | <Chutt> | that's in programs/mythfilldatabase/filldata.cpp |
01:48 | <tmk> | cause i may need to write my own grabber/generator |
01:52 | <mrra> | but what kind of remote do I buy? |
01:53 | | * mrra does some googling |

01:58 | <o_c> | tmk: my grabber only gets desc, name and times.. |
01:59 | <o_c> | what's the difference from the pvr2/350 and the on that says just "hauppauge pvr"? |
01:59 | <o_c> | can get one of those at a pretty good price |

11:08 | <mikegrb> | good morning Captain_Murdoch_ |
11:09 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | hey |
11:10 | <mikegrb> | your probably one of my wifes favorite myth developers, behind chutt <g> |
11:10 | <mikegrb> | she complains abt how many commercials there are now when she watches live tv |
11:11 | <mechtn> | captain, your a dev for myth? |
11:11 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | that's what got my wife hooked on myth as well, part of the reason I wrote that code. |
11:11 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | mechtn, I wrote the commercial skip/detection code. |
11:11 | <kvandivo> | when the program doesn't rate, innovate. |
11:11 | <mikegrb> | heh |
11:11 | <mechtn> | ah.. is there a mini distro of linux with myth included |
11:11 | <mechtn> | i |
11:12 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | well, she didn't like the idea of a computer in the living room, then I showed her what I could make it do. :) |
11:12 | <mechtn> | i'm wanting it to put on my xbox |
11:12 | <mikegrb> | xvideo is the main problem right now with using mythtv on frame buffer, right? I know qt supports it but would changes have to be made to qt stuff to get it to work? |
11:13 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | kvandivo: I had the video working on the first m179 last night. just had to change the tuner's i2c address in ivtv.h. |
11:16 | <kvandivo> | no audio yet? |
11:17 | <kvandivo> | i haven't yet delved into the ivtv stuff. i hope i'm going to be able to get a 250 and 197 to cooperate |
11:17 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | no, haven't delved into that yuan patch much. I tried just changing the pci ID in ivtv.h but that locked the computer hard so it's not exactly like the yuan card(s) |
11:18 | <kvandivo> | i'm still working on house stuff so i'm not going to be able to look into that until the weekend, probably |
11:18 | <Captain_Murdoch_> | kvandivo: should be doable. I had all 3 m179 cards in the system at one time last night and was getting video from each, just didn't have the tuner working so I took 2 out to test and need to put the others back in tonight. |

18:13 | <warthawg> | hEximal: i sure do, kung foo city |
18:14 | <overridex> | i use the default ogg quality with a video bitrate of 1350... |
18:14 | <hEximal> | hmm |
18:14 | <warthawg> | aha: i bet that is my problem |
18:15 | <overridex> | i use mplayer's autocropping, and leave it at the default 480x480 res.... then use mencoder's aspect setting so that some players will set the aspect correctly when you play it back like they do dvds and stuff |
18:15 | <hEximal> | what format are you recording in? |
18:15 | <hEximal> | overridex |
18:15 | <overridex> | rtjpeg |
18:16 | <hEximal> | i'm going from mpeg2 w/ pvr250 |
18:16 | <overridex> | hehe well you certainly don't need my script then |
18:16 | <hEximal> | well |
18:16 | <overridex> | mencoder can read that straight off |
18:17 | <hEximal> | let me go check |
18:17 | -!- | warthawg [~warthawg@cs6668177-209.austin.rr.com] has left #mythtv ["Client exiting"] |
18:17 | <overridex> | you might need to rename it to .mpg but that's about it... |
18:18 | <hEximal> | should i transcode in full res? |
18:18 | <hEximal> | 720x480 |
18:18 | <overridex> | hehe you'll need a mighty high bitrate to |
18:18 | <hEximal> | I just need to find someone's settings |
18:19 | <hEximal> | someone's 'recommended' settings |
18:19 | <hEximal> | it lists hardware mjpeg |
18:19 | <hEximal> | but i'm guessing that is for 350 |
18:21 | <overridex> | (2050*1024)/((720*480)*29.97) = 0.20267180761 so if my math's right you need a bitrate of like 2050 at that res to have a decent bits per pixel |
18:22 | <hEximal> | what codec should I use? |
18:22 | <hEximal> | RTjpeg or mpeg4 |
18:22 | <overridex> | mpeg4 if you want to really compress them and put them on cds.... |
18:22 | <hEximal> | ahh ok |
18:23 | <overridex> | i think to get decent quality though you'll want to use mencoder externally though |
18:23 | <hEximal> | w/ divx or something? |
18:24 | <overridex> | mencoder -vf crop=466:478:8:0,hqdn3d,pp=lb -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1350:vhq:v4mv:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:trell:aspect=4/3:vpass=1 -o ~/outfilename.avi infilename.mpg |
18:24 | <hEximal> | ahh |
18:24 | <overridex> | err, get taht crop out of there :) |
18:24 | <hEximal> | nifty |
18:24 | <overridex> | and change the bitrate.... and that doesn't do audio |
18:24 | <hEximal> | man |
18:24 | <hEximal> | i'm going to have to search |
18:25 | <overridex> | i use oggenc to do the audio separate then i use ogmmerge to put them together into a ogm.... |
18:25 | <hEximal> | that sounds fun |
18:25 | <hEximal> | i'd probably have kung fu voice track |
18:25 | <hEximal> | if I did that |
18:25 | <overridex> | http://zebra.fh-weingarten.de/~maxi/html/mplayer-users/2003-09/msg00376.html <-- you might want to look at that thread... |
18:25 | <hEximal> | thanks, looking. |
18:26 | <overridex> | it's a lot easier to use mencoder with mpeg2 files from a pvr250 though than it is to use it with rtjpeg nuv files like i am hehe |
18:27 | <hEximal> | that's promising |
18:28 | <hEximal> | ever play with mythweb? |
18:28 | <overridex> | nope... |
18:28 | <hEximal> | seems really nice |
18:29 | <overridex> | i got my ir blaster today though, gonna mess with that in the next few days... hopefully get my digital channels working :) |
18:31 | <hEximal> | what is ir blaster? |
18:31 | <hEximal> | not infra red |
18:32 | <overridex> | yeah it's an infra red transmiter that connects to your serial port so that mythtv can change the channel on an external digital cable box... |
18:32 | <hEximal> | ahh |
18:32 | <hEximal> | so you can use one remote for everything |
18:33 | <overridex> | hehe well i don't use a remote for mine (yet) i use mythtv in a window on my workstation and control it with the keyboard |
18:33 | <hEximal> | yep |
18:33 | <hEximal> | me too |
18:33 | <overridex> | but at least then i can have mythtv scheduled to record stuff on digital channels and it can change the channel and stuff on it's own |
18:34 | <hEximal> | mythweb is great for scheduling recordings |
18:34 | <hEximal> | or at least it looks like it is |
18:34 | <overridex> | only problem is i'm on kernel 2.6.0-test6 and it looks like lirc is kinda weird to get working on it to get the ir blaster working.... |

20:38 | <SarahEmm> | wow... watching live TV appears to be working! *tests audio* |
20:38 | <mechou> | SarahEmm, what exactly would cause this bttv driver error? |
20:38 | <SarahEmm> | i dunno, i haven't looked at the code yet. |
20:39 | <SarahEmm> | it seems harmless actually though, as once i corrected the audio device it still comes up, but video shows fine |
20:39 | <SarahEmm> | i'll look at the code when i'm bored sometime.. |
20:40 | <SarahEmm> | wooo! audio working! |
20:40 | <SarahEmm> | switching to 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 from 2.4.20-vanilla fixed the slow-video issues |
20:42 | <mechou> | SarahEmm: darn, you use gentoo? Don't you have to "cmpile world?" |
20:42 | <mechou> | s/cmpile/compile |
20:42 | <SarahEmm> | well, you build the whole OS when you install it, yes |
20:43 | <mechou> | how long does "compile world" take? |
20:45 | <SarahEmm> | well, the initial bootstrapping to build a base system that'll boot up to a shell was about 9h, then X added a few more hours, Qt added a few more hours, misc. stuff added a few more hours |
20:45 | <SarahEmm> | i'm on a celeron 1.7ghz, 256mb ram |
20:45 | <SarahEmm> | i'm impressed with it so far tho. |
20:45 | <mechou> | Yeah, I'd have no patience for that.... |
20:46 | <mechou> | 9 hours to get to a shell, sheesh.... |
20:46 | <SarahEmm> | well, i was working night shifts, and brought the box to work, just let it compile while i was doing other stuff |
20:46 | <Captain_Murdoch> | mechou: I'm around now for a short while. |
20:47 | <mechou> | Captain_Murdoch, the avermedia m179, those don't come w/ remotes, do they (even *new*)? |
20:47 | <Captain_Murdoch> | no, no place to hookup a remote on the card. |
20:48 | <SarahEmm> | nice.. it's using about 65% of the CPU for 480x480 MPEG4 |
20:48 | <cmorgan> | how does the remote for the pvr-X50 cards work? is there an ir sensor you plug into the card? ir mounted on the card itself? |
20:49 | <mechou> | Captain_Murdoch: hmm, I'm confused. Are those cards bundled with MS Media Center? Don't those have remotes? |
20:53 | <Captain_Murdoch> | remote must have a usb or serial receiver then, cause nothing is on the card. only ports are antenna, composite in, svideo in, and audio in it appears. |
20:54 | <Captain_Murdoch> | cmorgan: ir sensor comes attached to a cable that plugs into the x50 card. |
20:55 | <cmorgan> | Captain_Murdoch: ahh, k |
20:55 | | * cmorgan was wondering what a good choice for an ir blaster like device would be. heard that the actisys 200L(i think) didn't work with all cable boxes... |

21:05 | <Captain_Murdoch> | no, p2-400 |
21:05 | <mechou> | Captain_Murdoch, dang... |

21:06 | <mechou> | now if ivtv can do audio for avemedia m179 you'd be all set :) |
21:06 | <Captain_Murdoch> | an old Dell poweredge server from work that is a dinosaur by today's standards. |
21:06 | <Captain_Murdoch> | mechou, yeah. then I can sell my pvr-250 and recoup most of the cost for all 3 m179 cards. :) |
21:06 | <mechou> | hehe... |
21:08 | <Captain_Murdoch> | need someone with windows installed to snoop the m179 card using the instructions the guy posted on the ivtv list. |
21:08 | <Captain_Murdoch> | I switched my wife's computer to Linux almost a year ago so we're 100% windows free at home. |
21:08 | <mechou> | Captain_Murdoch, are you one of those people that check daily for newegg refurbs? Just wondering how you heard about the refurbs.... |
21:09 | <Captain_Murdoch> | no, someone mentioned it in the ivtv-dev channel last week. they were $44 each, then when I decided to take the plunge and buy a couple they had dropped to $39 so I bought 3 instead. |
21:10 | <mechou> | yeah, I bet you got the last three too :)... |
21:11 | <Captain_Murdoch> | me or kvandivo. I think he picked up 2 and I know someone else did as well. they were gone a couple days later but at that price (less than half normal) they would go fast. |
21:11 | <Captain_Murdoch> | bbl, gotta go move some furniture. |
21:11 | <mechou> | later... |

22:46 | <cmorgan> | i think there is a bug in the 'setup' program and 'mythfilldatabase'. I run mythfilldatabase and it wants to find a .xmltv file but the file is actually THEVIDEOINPUTDEIVCE.xmltv... doh |
22:50 | <bline> | dont you think someone else would have noticed? |
22:50 | <cmorgan> | i would have thought so |
22:50 | <bline> | more likly you didnt set it up properly |
22:51 | <cmorgan> | i thought so |
22:51 | <cmorgan> | its odd that it wants a '.xmltv' file and i have a 'pvr-350.xmltv' file |
22:51 | <cmorgan> | exacltly the name of the text i entered for the video capture device |
22:53 | <cmorgan> | maybe its because i didn't go through input connections(i lack a capture card at this moment) |

23:27 | <kvandivo> | Captain_Murdoch: I actually only got one m179. of course, with the 2 dell's that i bought today, i think i've spent enough money recently anyway.. |
23:32 | <tmk> | how's that m179 working for you guys |
23:33 | | * SarahEmm is away: walkies bbs |
23:35 | <Captain_Murdoch> | tmk, I had all 3 capturing video at the same time earlier as a test. haven't had a chance to mess with audio stuff though. would be nice if that guy who said he had a m179 in a windows mce machine could follow those instructions that guy posted and find out what sets up the sound. |
23:35 | <Captain_Murdoch> | kvandivo: I thought it was you who said 2, must have been someone else. |
23:37 | <tmk> | Captain_Murdoch: you sure it's not the same as the yuan board? |

23:38 | <Captain_Murdoch> | before I setup the tuner I dind't get any audio. when I tried setting the pci subsystem id to make it think my card was a yuan card it locked up my computer. it did that on 2 different comupters one with an athlon and one a p2-400 |
23:39 | <tmk> | did you find out where it was locking? |
23:39 | <Captain_Murdoch> | so when I tried the plain yuan driver without the pci id patch it did video but no audio (cause it was using the fallback pvr-250 code. then when I changed pci id it locked the computer. |
23:39 | <Captain_Murdoch> | haven't had a chance to mess with it tonight. |
23:39 | <Captain_Murdoch> | except to test the 3 cards. :) |
23:39 | <kvandivo> | (fwiw, I've managed to open my fedex box tonight.. haven't yet done anything with the card, though) |
23:40 | <kvandivo> | i even got a cd with it. wasn't expecting that |
23:40 | <Captain_Murdoch> | ditto |
23:40 | <Captain_Murdoch> | had to manually extract the firmware though to try that. I think I'm running the hauppauge firmware now |
23:41 | <overridex> | ok, i had set my ip to 127.0.0.1 in my mythtv setup program when i first set it up.... now i went to try a frontend on my laptop and realized i had to change it, so i ran setup again and changed it to 192.168.0.3... but the frontend on the laptop is still trying to connect to 127.0.0.1.... what am i doing wrong? |
23:41 | <Captain_Murdoch> | tmk, I'll try to insert some debug statements if there's not enough already in there so I can see what's going on. it would lock when I did "modprobe ivtv", didn't even get to do a "cat /dev/video0" |

23:48 | <Captain_Murdoch> | tmk: according to that patch, the 2 different boards use 2 different gpio values so the m179 may be different. I'm using Takeru's instructions to add an entry for the m179 but copying the gpio values from the other cards. |
