00:00<riksta>what program said that?
00:00<riksta>chmod +s to set to setuid
00:00<Netslayer>when i ran the mail command above as a user
00:00<riksta>hmm mail shouldnt need to be suid
00:01* Netslayer conspires about stupid mandrake

00:11<Netslayer>any new features or anything in myth lately? hey is it easy to implement callerid now?
00:13<Chutt>callerid's in cvs
00:14<Netslayer>i was reading about that.. any idea where to look to see if my modem works? is caller id support available on all modems? hmm
00:14<Chutt>absolutely no idea
00:18* Captain_Murdoch has caller ID, it's answering the phone and going "Yeah, who is it?"
00:20<Netslayer>u know what would be awesome.. if you could plug in a webcam, and have a mythPhone or something so two people can do video conferencing.. but chances are you don't talk to people that have myth setups
00:20<kimo_sabe>Netslayer: that would be sweet
00:21<Netslayer>what i want is a voice recognition system. Ya know for simple stuff, channel up, goto channel, power off, find programname
00:22<Netslayer>if my 10mhz cell phone can do it.. my 2700XP AMD should
00:25* Netslayer realizes his linux box will never be able to send email and gives up
00:27<bishop>live tv is pixalilated on my screen. any ideas? color is great. still scenes are great. but any fast movement loses clarity
00:29<bishop>also, i have a apex on both sides of my screen that curve inward right about in the middle. like something you would fix with monitor settings
00:29<Chutt>up your bitrate
00:31<bishop>i ran /usr/lib/ivtv/test_ioctl -f width=720,height=480. i thought that was max?
00:35<Netslayer>your overscan is probably too much over your screen so pixels on the edge are warping.. happens to me. If you see compression artifacts during high motion scenes and don't mind using more hd space up your bandwidth
00:36<Chutt>any recording settings you set with test_ioctl are overwritten by the settings in mythtv.
00:40<bishop>i don;t see options for changing bitrate in mythfrontend or mythtvsetup
00:41<Chutt>mythfrontend -> setup -> tv settings -> recording profiles

01:03<kimo_sabe>bah, it doesn't like this saa7134 card.
01:05<mikegrb>well avidemux produced a good dvd format mpeg2 from mpeg4 nuv
01:05<mikegrb>no sound though
01:06<mikegrb>Chutt: nuv originally doesn't support compressed sound, that was one of the myth extensions right?
01:06<Chutt>-march=athlon-xp is about 50% slower than -march=pentiumpro on some work code
01:06<Chutt>mikegrb, rigt
01:06<Chutt>err, right
01:07<mikegrb>this looks really nice though
01:07<mikegrb>for pvr users, will take a lot of steps out
01:07<mikegrb>the post that one guy made said use avidemux2 as the first step
01:08<mikegrb>I meant the pvr mpeg2 files, to convert them to dvd format
01:08<Chutt>most anything can work on those, no?
01:08<mikegrb>the guy who posted to the list said use avidemux2 to split the audio and video
01:08<mikegrb>then go through mplex and stuff
01:08<mikegrb>but I found avidemux2 will use the mplex library and do everything itself
01:09<mikegrb>right, anything can work on them
01:09<mikegrb>avidemux2 is gui even which some people would like
01:09<Chutt>0.235 seconds vs. 0.327 seconds
01:09<Chutt>optimizations aren't always a good thing =)
01:09<mikegrb>I just need to make it recognize the sound
01:10<mikegrb>nuv was originally mpeg4 only and you added rtjpeg support or the other way around?
01:10<Chutt>first is -O3 -march=pentiumpro, second is -O3 -march=athlon-xp, running both on my xp1800+
01:10<Chutt>nuv was rtjpeg, uncompressed audio
01:10<Chutt>but it had some hooks in the format for future expansion to other formats and compressed audio
01:10<mikegrb>well it got the mpeg4 video so that's a step in the right direction :)
01:10<Chutt>i expanded (a lot) on that
01:11<mikegrb>and myth always sets an aspect ratio of 1, I think I remember reading
01:11<mikegrb>for non dvb/hdtv anyway
01:12<Chutt>-O3 -march=pentiumpro -mmmx -msse -fomit-frame-pointer -malign-double -m128bit-long-double -maccumulate-outgoing-args -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -funroll-loops
01:12<Chutt>0.326069 seconds
01:12<Chutt>ah, the wonders of compiler optimizations
01:13<mikegrb> Editor :Audio streamer initialized
01:13<mikegrb> Audio codec: WAV
01:13<Chiphead-xchat>evening guys
01:13<mikegrb>not right
01:13<mikegrb>howdy Chiphead-xchat
01:14<Chiphead-xchat>oops must have been dropped sometime today
01:14-!-Chiphead-xchat is now known as Chiphead
01:15<mikegrb>Chutt: off hand does 1536 kbps sound in the right ballpark for mp3 quality setting 8
01:16<mikegrb>I might give uncompressed audio in myth a go
01:16<Chutt>should be 128kbps
01:16<mikegrb>but it actually sounds better compressed
01:16<Chutt>or 96
01:16<Chutt>i think
01:16<Chutt>or maybe double those
01:16<Chutt>i don't remember what i have it set to
01:16<Chiphead>or even 64kbs if it an old show
01:16<mikegrb>well it got the freq right but not the bitrate
01:17<Chutt>should be standard mp3
01:17<mikegrb>I might look at the avidemux code
01:17<mikegrb>would be great to find a method not requiring patches
01:17<mikegrb>I can grab the audio from mythtranscode and let it get the video from the nuv itself
01:18<mikegrb>just cat the video fifo to /dev/null
01:18<mikegrb>can the audio one to a file, hmmm even better just point it at the audio fifo while it does it's encoding
01:18<Chutt>the whole fifo thing is pretty crappy, imo
01:18<Chutt>you lose your timestamps
01:19<mikegrb>which could cause sync issues when recombined I presume
01:19<Chiphead>fifo is the only way I was able to get an edited stream (comercials removed) to stay in sync in my encodes
01:19<Chutt>as long as everything's perfect
01:19<Chutt>you'll stay in sync
01:19<mikegrb>avidemux even supports cut's
01:19<mikegrb>er cuts
01:20<mikegrb>yha I'll give it a go
01:20<mikegrb>get it setup to encode again over night
01:20<mikegrb>I was excited to see my show in avidemux though
01:20<Chiphead>just test it in small chunks
01:20<mikegrb>nah, easier to just do a whole show
01:21<mikegrb>though an hr is the shortest thing I have around
01:21<mikegrb>I'm going to sleep anyway <G>

02:11<tmk>i seem to have found a problem with CVS myth
02:11<tmk>mythepg requires libmyth-0.13
02:11<tmk>but it's not in the include path unless you make install before mythepg is compiled
02:11<tmk>so you have to make -> error, make install

13:52<btatton>Anyone know where I can get a cheap Xbox to do a frontend test with
13:53<kvandivo>what's your definition of cheap?
13:53<kvandivo>and what test do you want to do?
13:54<Chiphead>xbox makes an excelent frontend
13:54<Chiphead>check ebay
13:55* Chiphead is using an xbox for the frontend
13:55* Chiphead is also working on removing X dependany and using DirectFB for the frontend for faster boots
13:56<kvandivo>why don't you just go all the way and rewrite mythfrontend as an xbe that can be launched straight from your favorite dashboard
13:56<Chiphead>because I dont support ilegal XDK software

13:57<modplug>where can i find linux drivers for my pinnacle pctv rave card?
13:57<Chiphead>and why rewrite the whole thing when all I have to do is implement a videoout class
13:57<kvandivo>well, i figured if you were bored..
13:58<kvandivo>and wanted the ultimate in speedy bootups..
13:58<Chiphead>you sound bored... you do it :0
13:59<kvandivo>na.. i've got other things on my plate and i just leave the frontend running all the time, so it doesn't bother me all that much
13:59<btatton>Chiphead, are you using an NFS mount for mythmusic? Or is there a way to get it to stream?
14:00<kvandivo>same for video
14:00* Chiphead doesnt use mythmusic
14:00-!-choenig [] has joined #mythtv
14:00<btatton>Thats what I am doing now.
14:00<btatton>So is it only live tv / recordings that stream?
14:01<kvandivo>to be more accurate, it's mythbackend that streams
14:01<btatton>Thats what I thought.
14:01<Chiphead>the backend does the streaming to the frontend
14:01<btatton>I realize that.
14:02<Chiphead>and only for nuv files I beleive
14:02<btatton>I see.
14:02<btatton>How small have you gotten your base os install down to?
14:04<Chiphead>Im running it on the unused space
14:04<Chiphead>with room to compile myth and qt/e and directfb
14:05<btatton>Not to shabby..
14:05<Chiphead>install Xebian-0.5.1
14:05<Chiphead>works very well
14:05<btatton>thats what I will do on the Xbox.
14:05<btatton>I am using fedora core on the backend
14:06<Chiphead>yeah Im running some version of rh on my backend... cant remember which
14:07<btatton>Did you software or hardware mod you frontend?
14:07<Chiphead>X2.2 Pro
14:07* Chiphead is very happy with it

14:08<btatton>mod chip?
14:09<btatton>Do you still have all orig xbox functionality?
14:09<Chiphead>yep... turn the chip off and I have a stock box
14:09<Chiphead>turn it on and Im running linux
14:09<btatton>I will have to do some reading.
14:10<Chiphead>check out
14:11<btatton>do you do any dvd ripping from the xbox?
14:12<kvandivo>question about xebian.. is it using a loopback device for the filesystem?
14:13<Chiphead>it can or it can install on a native linux partition using the unused space on the HD if you have a 10g drive.
14:13<kvandivo>but with an 8 it has to use the loopback?
14:14<kvandivo>on gentoox, which i am running, it _does_ use the loopback.. and that makes compiling anything big rather painful. as soon as the process hits swap things get _really_ slow
14:14<Chiphead>yeah unless you go linux only and give up stock xbox
14:15<Chiphead>or just install a bigger hd.
14:15<Chiphead>xbox wont care, it will just use the first 8g and linux the rest
14:16<btatton>Is there docs on doing that?

22:47<tmk>nah not yet
22:47<tmk>that'll be a week or two
22:47<tmk>i've got a few projects at once right now
22:47<tmk>building a set-top box
22:47<tmk>made the case myself
22:47-!-billytwowilly [] has joined #mythtv
22:48<cmorgan>should put up a webpage about it ;-)
22:48<tmk>and let's not forget monday night football
22:48<tmk>i will when it's done
22:48<ShockValue>eventually, i would like this box to replace my cdplayer (already have them all ripped to lossless), DVD, and TV
22:48<ShockValue>but i cant give up DTS and 5.1 :)
22:48<cmorgan>you think jens will fix it up?
22:49<tmk>flac's still a huge space-eater
22:49<tmk>probably not
22:49<tmk>he's a fiend tho
22:49<ShockValue>yeah, but gigs are cheap.
22:49<cmorgan>were you planning on just restarting things and pretending nothing happened?
22:49<tmk>more or less
22:49<tmk>need to re-work init in general
22:49<tmk>basically i want to write a functino that just checks if firmware's alive
22:50<tmk>and is run on API errors
22:50<tmk>if it's dead, then reset
22:50<cmorgan>using that read command?
22:50<tmk>using the no-op command
22:50<cmorgan>the first one mentioned in the api i think
22:50<tmk>it does it after loading firmware
22:50<cmorgan>would you accept a patch for that if i hacked something up?
22:50<tmk>if it's not a hack
22:51<cmorgan>you think thats a reasonable implementation though?
22:52<tmk>let's take this to #ivtv-dev
23:01<billytwowilly>hurrray! errors from mythbackend: read audio: Input/output error
23:01<billytwowilly>only read -1 from 4096 bytes from '/dev/dsp'
23:02<billytwowilly>read audio: Input/output error
23:02<billytwowilly>now can someone tell me what is going on?
23:03<billytwowilly>cmorgan: does that mean I don't have permission to read/write to /dev/dsp?
23:04<cmorgan>i'm not sure why it would be reading from /dev/dsp...
23:04<cmorgan>but maybe
23:05<billytwowilly>it does that exact same error if I change the setttings to /dev/sound/dsp and mixer.. still says /dev/dsp..
23:06<billytwowilly>Starting up as the master server.
23:06<billytwowilly> is defined, but isn't attached to a cardinput.
23:06<billytwowilly>that comes up when starting mythbackend.
23:08<billytwowilly>mythbackend is also run as root. can you tell me how to change the permissions on /dev/dsp so that anyone can read/write to it?

23:25<billytwowilly>cmorgan: if the command you asked me to do with a wav file earlier was cat wavfilename.wave > /dev/dsp then it doesn't work.
23:25<billytwowilly>same with cat wavefilename.wav >> /dev/dsp
23:26<cmorgan>permission errors?
23:26<cmorgan>anything if you tail /var/log/message or syslog?
23:28<billytwowilly>the last thing in syslog is about the rpms I installed to play the mp3 file and to decode it to wav.
23:28<billytwowilly>there is no /var/log/message
23:29<cmorgan>i'm not sure
23:29<cmorgan>someone can probably help you, i'm off to bed
23:30<hadees>anyone mount anything with nfs?
23:31<billytwowilly>cmorgan, Ok, thanks. Nothing in /var/log/messages either.
23:31<tmk>sure. i've got nfs going
23:32<Teflon->hmmm nfs
23:32<Teflon->i gotta do that sometime.
23:32<Teflon->(for mythtv)

23:56<CyberKnet>Aha. sweet wireless freedom =)
23:57<CyberKnet>For some reason, my 54g network drops out intermittently. I think I need to sabotage all my neighbors microwaves and cordless phones!
23:57<CyberKnet>So I saw the post on the list about the avermedia M179 deal on ebay.
23:57<CyberKnet>I'm actually pretty tempted, does anyone have any info about it?
