07:33<Magotari>Meh. I cannot get skas3 working right, unless I disable /proc/mm but that ain't skas3 anymore then.
07:33<Magotari>Performance on the Kilogram is not really that different. Gonna try one more system.
07:34<Magotari>A kernel build ought to be a good benchmark too.

09:43<saintiss-#uml->>hi all
09:44<saintiss-#uml->>is it possible to boot a 32-bit kernel from a 64-bit environment?
09:44<Magotari-#uml->>saintiss: Yesterday there was a person here who managed to pull that off.
09:44<Magotari-#uml->>THe trick was to have a 32bit filesystem.
09:45<Magotari-#uml->>The kernel was from the UML main website.
09:45<Magotari-#uml->>Same for the fs.
09:45<saintiss-#uml->>Magotari, hmm, is there such thing as a 64-bit filesystem?
09:45<Magotari-#uml->>Yes, seems to be. Files inside compiled for 64 or 32 bits.
09:45<Magotari-#uml->>I have not seen it personally, but it was done.
09:45<Magotari-#uml->>If you look at the channel logs for this channel two days ago and yesterday, you will see everything.
09:46<Magotari-#uml->>The link to the logs is in the topic.
09:46<Magotari-#uml->>Simply put, try booting the kernel/fs combination from the website.
09:46<Magotari-#uml->>It might even work.
09:46<Magotari-#uml->>If it won't read the logs to learn more. They are a tad longish, but not horribly so.
09:48<saintiss-#uml->>Magotari, don't I need a spare partition?
09:48<saintiss-#uml->>for the fs?
09:48<Magotari-#uml->>No.
09:48<Magotari-#uml->>Actually, a separate partition is a special case.
09:48<saintiss-#uml->>ah ok
09:48<saintiss-#uml->>good
09:48<Magotari-#uml->>You usually use a single file on your normal partition as a rootfs.
09:49<saintiss-#uml->>but surely I can't just use the kernel from the website, as is won't run on amd64, right?
09:49<Magotari-#uml->>It worked the the guy yesterday.
09:49<saintiss-#uml->>hmm, ok, trying now
09:49<Magotari-#uml->>I was amazed, I tell you.
09:49<Magotari-#uml->>Everything is in the logs.
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>He was on an AMD64.
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>Could not boot a 64fs with 32kerel...
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>Nor he could boot a 32fs with 64kernel.
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>But when the bits matched, he could boot it just fine.
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>My jaw dropped, but well...
09:50<Magotari-#uml->>Whatever works.
09:51<saintiss-#uml->>interesting... normally, the executable can't even start, if it wasn't compiled on a 64-bit machine... but I'll see very soon :)
09:56<saintiss-#uml->>Magotari, hmm, you seem to be right indeed :o
09:56<saintiss-#uml->>thanks :)
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>only, it stops here:
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>Mounting other filesystems: [ OK ]
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>Generating SSH1 RSA host key: [FAILED]
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>Starting crond: [ OK ]
09:57<Magotari-#uml->>Yeah, well, it started booting. You are already doing a miracle, don't expect it to take you all the way.
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>and I get this a number of times:
09:57<saintiss-#uml->>modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.22-rc2/modules.dep: No such file or directory
09:58<Magotari-#uml->>No surprise about the module thingy.
09:58<Magotari-#uml->>That is normal.
09:58<saintiss-#uml->>hmm, now I get:
09:58<saintiss-#uml->>INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
09:58<saintiss-#uml->>INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
09:58<Magotari-#uml->>Hmm...
09:58<saintiss-#uml->>that's odd...
09:58<Magotari-#uml->>I see why it stopped booting, it actually is done booting, it just cannot launch a login prompt.
09:59<Magotari-#uml->>Are you running this via sudo or something?
09:59<saintiss-#uml->>no
09:59<saintiss-#uml->>just normal user
09:59<Magotari-#uml->>No idea then. It should go into a terminal. Ah well.
09:59<Magotari-#uml->>Try booting with init=/bin/bash
09:59<Magotari-#uml->>Then adjust your guest's inittab.
10:00<Magotari-#uml->>Amazing that it does work though, eh?
10:01<saintiss-#uml->>indeed
10:01<saintiss-#uml->>hmm, starting with the init parameter does give me a prompt
10:01<saintiss-#uml->>what should I change inittab to?
10:01<Magotari-#uml->>Let me see...
10:02<Magotari-#uml->>What does the c0 line currently say?
10:02<saintiss-#uml->>c0:1235:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty0
10:03<Magotari-#uml->>That looks just fine.

10:03<jdike-#uml->>Hi guys
10:03<Magotari-#uml->>Hey, jdike.
10:03<Magotari-#uml->>saintiss: I have no idea. It should work fine.
10:03<saintiss-#uml->>Magotari, ok... thanks anyway... is there a way I can add files to the filesystem?
10:04<saintiss-#uml->>i.e. files from my "real" filesystem
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>Yes, you can.
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>There are many options here.
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>1. You can use nfs.
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>2. You can attach a file to uml as a block device.
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>ubdb=linux.tar
10:04<saintiss-#uml->>nfs would probably be best
10:04|-|kokoko1 [~Slacker@203.148.65.19] has joined #uml
10:04<Magotari-#uml->>Then inside uml you can just dd it to a file.
10:05<Magotari-#uml->>3. There is a thing called hostfs...
10:05<saintiss-#uml->>does localhost give me my real host?
10:05<kokoko1-#uml->>hi
10:05<Magotari-#uml->>Hello, kokoko1.
10:05<Magotari-#uml->>saintiss: What do you mean?
10:05<saintiss-#uml->>Magotari, if I want to mount my "real" filesystem as NFS, I guess I need to know the right IP?
10:06<saintiss-#uml->>i.e. would 127.0.0.1 be right?
10:06<Magotari-#uml->>Well, you need to put UML onto the network too.
10:06<Magotari-#uml->>It would not be right.
10:06<Magotari-#uml->>It will lead you to UML.
10:06<Magotari-#uml->>UML by default is not networked to the host.
10:06<saintiss-#uml->>right... ok, so I still have some work...
10:06<saintiss-#uml->>I have to go right now though
10:06<saintiss-#uml->>many thanks already :)
10:06<Magotari-#uml->>Ok. Good luck.

10:07<Magotari-#uml->>Welcome. Feel free to come...
10:07<Magotari-#uml->>back later. Yeah. Ok.
10:07<jdike-#uml->>hehe
10:07<Magotari-#uml->>jdike: That guy is the second person in 48 hours to boot a 32bit kernel and fs in a 64bit machine.
10:07<jdike-#uml->>it didn't use to work
10:07<jdike-#uml->>so that's good
10:08<Magotari-#uml->>Well, it works absolutely fine now.
10:08<jdike-#uml->>there's no reason it shouldn't - one of the points of x86_64 was 32-bit compatibility
10:08<jdike-#uml->>there were some subtle bugs that broke UML for a while, though
10:09<Magotari-#uml->>Anyway, I have a second patch brewing, to correct some old links in Kconfig. It will span multiple files. (so far two lines in two files) I will submit it later, when you are not busy with the merge fallout.
10:09<jdike-#uml->>send it when it's ready
10:09<jdike-#uml->>I'll just drop it in my tree and forward it on later
10:09<Magotari-#uml->>Ok. Gotcha.
10:09<Magotari-#uml->>No real changes, just Kconfig descriptions anyway.
10:10<Magotari-#uml->>Ok, that is all for now from me. No new bugs that I see. The lack of skas3 is getting painful and the patches from uml-user are not good enough to get there.
10:10[~]jdike #uml needs to clone current git and see what all the fuss is about#uml-> needs to clone current git and see what all the fuss is about
10:11<Magotari-#uml->>I have git17 here, but I did not try to build it yet.

14:51<jdike-#uml->>if so, attach gdb to it when it hangs and get a stack trace
14:52<cl4sh-#uml->>:) very funny
14:52<cl4sh-#uml->>how to do that
14:53<jdike-#uml->>first, make it hang

14:53<jdike-#uml->>OK
14:54<jdike-#uml->>do you know the umid of one of them?
14:54<cl4sh-#uml->>how to find it?
14:54<jdike-#uml->>you must since you've been plugging stuff into them
14:54<jdike-#uml->>uml_mconsole foo config eth0=mcast
14:54<jdike-#uml->>foo is the umid
14:55<jdike-#uml->>gdb linux `cat ~/.uml/umid/pid`

16:30<cl4sh-#uml->>i even dont know tht is so many ways to looking whats wrong
